"Definitely in the play-offs" - DB

"He plays in a way that wins football matches rather than one of those coaches who talks a good game, but doesn’t win.”
A dig at The Two Nigel's do you think?

Very dinosaur. “Football ain’t won on a computer” without realising that CW is more than well up on that side of things but mixes it with the more traditional side.

Ol’ Diplodocus is going a bit senile, I fear:

This ‘we play the right way’ when you’re not winning is not his thing.”

It’s a phrase Tufty proudly uses all the time. If Bassett is pretending that CW is following in his hoofsteps he’s either disingenuous or lost his marbles. Tuftyball is light years ahead of his ‘style’.

It depends on how you interpret that comment. Some clubs have relied predominantly on databases and ‘stats’ to recruit players. I think Villa did, which lead to them being relegated. That’s how I interpreted it; that CW doesn’t rely on solely on stats but actually puts the hard graft in, on the training ground, in post match analysis and pre match planning, in doing proper due diligence on players. That you can’t learn man management from a computer.
I find it hard to believe that Bassett isn’t aware that Wilder is as up to date as anyone else.

He’s clearly referring to managers who try to play out from the back at all times, irrespective of whether they have the players capable of doing so. Wilder doesn’t. Playing out from the back is our preferred option but we’ll get rid when necessary. We play our game intelligently and flexibly.

Say what you want about Dave Bassett, and clearly the style he employed out of necessity in the early 90s would not work today, just as Brian Cloughs or Don Revies or Bill Shankleys style wouldn’t work today,

But Dave Bassett is the manager who literally saved the club from oblivion.

When he was unable to save Billy Mckweans shambles of a squad from relegation he offered his resignation, Reg Brearly then did SUFC his greatest service by rejecting it. If Bassett had not been in charge in 1988 i firmly believe we would have found ourselves back in Division 4 with in two years, crowds were already down to 8k and would have dropped further, we had a Chairman wanting out, and the early 90s recession was about to hit so no investors would be coming in

We could easily have done a Bradford Park Avenue and no longer exist except as some Northern Premier outfit in a Bescott stadium style ground.

Instead within two seasons we were in the top flight after spending next to nothing.

Still an incredible achievement.

It could apply to any number of British 'old school managers' - Mark Hughes, Pulis etc. The game has moved on, but they haven't. People like Nuno Espirito Santo are the future. And, hopefully, CW.

Minus a like for the Diplodocus comment (Basset was a legend for us), but otherwise spot on. :)
