That’s mad, had it been 0-0 he could have saved Leeds a loss just for a 1 match ban. Doesn’t seem harsh enough.

In the old days a foul like that outside the penalty area would just have been a direct free kick.
The purpose of the "preventing a goal-scoring opportunity" rule change is to punish the individual player/club in a meaningful way, rather than just giving away a free kick.
