I've thought a fit Lee Williamson has been the player with the biggest potential in our squad. When I've seen him (not regularly) he's often shown that he's got excellent ability on the ball, and with the way we play now he should really be dominating games by playmaking in the middle.

So why isn't he doing it?

I would have moved him to the right when Macdonald came on in place of Flynn ,he would have been more effective. Macdonald is like a breath of fresh air ,we haven't had his range of passing for years. Williamson is a difficult one in the fact that he is not as good as Doyle or Monty at winning the ball and not as good as Macdonald with it. He threatens to be a good player and then either loses form or gets injured. A mid 3 with Donty ,Willo and Macdonald would be an option with Quinn gettng a free role.

I agree with all of that, other than the MacDonald assessment. He's done OK but I'm yet to see what some are so excited about.

He's been poor out wide, he never looks comfortable in the role.

I think the factor winning McDonald over is he seems to have a little extra time on the ball to look up and spread play. Willo (and Doyle too) seemed in a chasing shadows performance against Hudddersfield with little physical side to his game. I know near enough everyone had a poor game, but until McDonald came on the midfield seemed totally unorganised. Normally I would say that Doyle has pulled things together on that front, but he was terrible too and it showed how much Monty was needed to put in a shift when we face a more physical side.

>So why isn't he doing it?
because we keep playing him wide.. he's a classic box to box midfielder
midfield should be right to left.. lowton willo macdonald quinn

I nearly agree with that, only one thing is that no ball winner there, we could get over run in midfield, much as they are not my favourites you do need a Monty/Doyle type in there as well, unless you play one up front, and play Monty/Doyle type in front of the back four. But then where do the goals come from, I know it is not a great goal scoring team at the moment, but playing 1 up front would make it worse.

So why isn't he doing it?

Attitude? Commitment? Fitness.

His form has been inconsistent, but he has been in and out of the team, struggled with injuries and been played out of position. I agree that he is frustrating though. He comes off the bench with a point to prove and can really have an impact. Yet when he starts he does not seem to take the opportunity to make sure one of the centre mid shirts is his. He can be a class act when he wants to be, but he needs to work on consistently performing. I like him as a player as he really offers an attacking option, passes well, creates and score. Plus he is not averse to getting his foot in. However he needs to perform week in week out. Deadbat wrote in his report that he needs to take a look at himself and think 'what do I want to do with my career'. If he stays fit, concentrates on football and applies himself then he could be a real asset to us (and probably go on to play at a higher level). A couple of people have suggested it is his attitude. Does he think he is too good for this level? Is he a billy big time? His inconsistency and performances so far seem to suggest that. However it could be because he has not had a run in the team, has/had a niggling injury/is not fully fit and has been played out of position. He has some real competition in McDonald (and possibly McAllister) so needs to book his ideas up sharp-ish.

I still get mighty frustrated with Quinn on the wing.

what i mean is quinn in his normal position.. he usually starts on the left side but ends up all over the place..
>only one thing is that no ball winner there
we don't use a proper ball winner anyway.. it is all on paper.. does doyle ever win the ball?.. monty 'does' win the ball but promptly loses it again then wins it again then loses it again (ad infinitum)

Doesnt tackle back enough, doesnt track runners enough.

That's his biggest shortfall for me. He has obvious ability but doesnt do enough.

He certainly shouldnt command a regular start at the moment.

His better qualities can change a game but we dont see them as often as we should.

When all fit and available I would go with Mendez-Laing, McDonald, Monty and Quinn in this league.

i prefer a ball winner/playmaker (patterson-cowans, mccall-brown for example) we need to get the right hand side sorted because flynn sounds like a mistake and its best to cut losses and sort it than use the blind faith option, then look at the central options open to us in terms of injury/availability linked to what the scouts have found out about the opposition. by all accounts we got hustled by a more physical team the other night maybe monty wouldve been a better option, had he been fit.
question - why did we need williams? i tghought JFL was a good player??

JFL was suspended the other night and we had no fit cover for him.

Lets give Flynn a chance, he's been in and out of the side and hasnt settled yet.

Prefer Mendez-Laing ahead of him at the moment though, on current form.

I think the other night was as much about nouse as it was about physicality.

When Morgan and Monty are back, it will be a lot harder to do to us what Huddersfield did.

JFL was suspended on tuesday, and with Williams coming in we're less vulnerable at centre half as well, as JFL can play there. It's only for a month and although it could be extended I reckon he may be sent back when the likes of Taylor, Ertl and Morgan returns.

Just not that impressed with Williamson some nice touches but never does enough over 90 mins. Think Monty/McDonald is the best Midfield partnership for the season. Would like to see Lowton and Quinn as the wide players
