Deal agreed with scunny done and dusted , good first move by NA let's hope he can unearth some gems for us UTB

Halleluiahh, praise the Lord!! We've recruited a Head Scout as a priority.

Shame he's just recruited three really good defenders for Scunny but I'm sure he's got more lined up, he's been a scout for donkeys' years.

It will have been on the agenda for some time that Turnbull would be coming to the lane . Don't worry about the defenders signed by Scunny . Turnbull will have saved the best till last , so he can sign them for the blades. Method in his madness.

It's NA's Step Brother WWF!

Well done Nigel, your first signing. and a bang on quality one too.
Addressed the glaring issue of piss poor recruitment under the car crash that was S Clough.
Those fuck wits were going to spend £600k on cart-horse Michael Smith from Swindon.
FFS !
Now we might recruit players who might actually go on to have a higher resale value.

A long way to go but a great start Nigel!

Well obviously he's a past working colleague and probably a mate. I've nothing against that nor actually if it was his stepbrother believe it or not.

I only started on about Simon Clough after about a year when I realised the signings were so average, though I had a certain unease about "croneyism", of course I did, but I am a very fair and pragmatic man really.

I had mentioned that some Derby fans thought their scouting was "amateurish" but saved by the recruitment of a few good youngsters. As a bloke who hangs on to my every word, you will recall I said that if you fix your brother up with a job you have to be so confident in his ability that in a way he has to overperform to dispell the inevitable suspicion that the brother has been favoured, especially when he is a newsagent who has only ever got work in football with his brother!

As for Turnbull, he has the experience and Scunny have punched above their weight over the time he has been there so I'm very happy with this appointment. In the only good times we've had success at Bramall Lane it's been built on player-recruitment by exceptional managers and scouts. I think any Head Scout should be given attention and have a presence with supporters, I really do. Let's hope we are celebrating a number of his finds before the season starts.

Just wanted to set the record straight B'Way in my usual self-righteous way.

Mission accomplished

Can't wait for the press conference. Champagne reception, cabaret, dancing girls, red carpet....

Damn!

Just realised this means we haven't even started looking to sign ANY players yet as we were waiting for this appointment!!!!!!!!!

NIGEL OUT!

I'm proud to post on a board where the depth of knowledge is so great that even the merits of a chief scout can be judged with such great confidence.

Must feel great for those who were talking about Turnbull's work in the pub last season for us to have finally got our man.

I think the reason why many are happy with the back room staff signing , is that under Clough and in recent past , the scouting system has appeared to be carried out in a unprofessional manner . Hopefully Turnbull will change this , and assist with recruitment at all levels. This should help us getting the right players at the right price , who suits the Adkins SUFC set up , especially with him having the expertise and knowledge we need.

You must have missed all the talk of this last season on here. All the threads are now of course saved in the Lee Turnbull section of the forum, as standard. I'm sure this one will be moved there in due course.

Turnbull's work in the pub?
Ffs, we've just got rid of a newsagent, now we've got a landlord?

And I think the reason so many are happy is because they didn't like Clough and think that if something is different to how Clough did it, then it must be good.

How can the scouting system have appeared to have been unprofessional? What access did any of us have to be able to judge it? Was the documentation on players lacking in detail? Did they not attend enough games? Did they not meet the briefs given by Clough when looking to identify players? Did they behave inappropriately when representing the club? Did they fiddle their expenses? Which of the signings were identified by the scouts and which were ones that Clough had already made his mind up on?

Are you going to name any names? Who was Bassett's chief scout? Who was Warnock's? Who was Harris's?

Was every signing they made great or were they a mixture of good and bad like Clough's signings?

Didn't the manager always have the final say in the end, even if a scout recommended a player?

Who can honestly say that "Clough's brother" was worse at the job than any of his unknown predecessors?

I bet he shouted at people more though.

Archie Clark and John Short were Harris' chief scout. Mick Jones (not our striker from the 1960s) was Warnock's chief scout. Think Bassett had a network of scouts (Geoff Taylor was probably the chief scout as well as assistant manager) and I remember Wally Downes telling my mate at Josephines that during his long injury lay off in 1988-89 he did a lot of scouting work for Bassett
