Not wanting to turn this into yet another McCabe v HRH discussion as personally I feel neither are suitable. However the shocking decision making by McCabe over the years is quite frankly staggering considering how successful he's been in his other business interests.

If it weren't for CW's genius masking how badly the club was run including the inevitable falling out by the owners, I'm sure the club would still be in L1 (or worse). The recent success (& entertaining style of football played) just makes me grateful the planets aligned and CW joined when he did and should be enjoyed for as long as he's at the club.

I’m pretty sure the season before he signed for us he played on loan, quite successfully, for Stoke. At the end of the season his contract at Villa expired, Stoke were keen to sign him and he was all set to go there until we offered a better financial deal. The fact he signed for us kind of shows what motivated him at the time.

Fair point Steve. I wasn't specifically pinning the signing of Hendrie on McCabe (although I can see how it could be read that way), more his decision making in appointing managers and setting the governance for the day-to-day running of the club. Incompetent managers such as Robson and executives so far out of their league it's untrue e.g. Jason Rockett are prime examples.

Hendrie popping up on a thread simply gave me an horrific flashback and reminded me of some of the awful times that are behind us (and will hopefully stay so).

However, to your point - as many will be aware, McCabe has personally intervened on signings (and non-signings e.g. Russell, J McGinn etc.) over the years - thankfully CW quickly did away with that nonsense, although to be fair there was an improvement in that area under Clough and the creation of the Technical Board when HRH came onboard and introduced a more professional governance structure.

Was it not for McCabe we may never have appointed Wilder. If he’s going to be slated for various managerial appointments (and I’m not saying he shouldn’t be) then quite rightly he has to be praised when he gets it right?

Or rather he's been wanting to sell the club for approaching 10 years now whilst demanding an unrealistic price from potential buyers. Covering the operational costs is a small part of the overall deal (as I'm sure you're aware) especially if Utd reach the promised land and McCabe hits the jackpot.

I'm not denying he's a Blade or the club is close to his heart but I also know how difficult he is to deal with and how misguided some of his views on football and Utd in particular are.

Don't think for a minute that he wouldn't have been off like a shot if anyone had offered near what he was demanding while the club floundered in L1.
