Watched a bit of Chelsea v Everton last night and them being a one man team (Palmer has scored 33% of their league goals) got me thinking.
When was the last time that we had one player who we were totally reliant on for goals? I’m thinking percentage of league goals scored by a single player in a league season. Have we got anywhere near a third of our goals scored by one player?

In my supporting time (post Bassett) I can think of Beattie in his first season, Ched in league one and Billy both seasons in league one as most likely. Or maybe Marcus Bent because we didn’t score many goals when he was about?

Any of the more statically minded on here fancy taking this on?

Blackman scored a large percentage of our goals in a pretty shit team I seem to remember.

I suspect as Revolution says that Jimmy Dunne won't be beaten. But here are a few of the more recent ones.

Leon Clarke in 2017/18: 19 out of 62 = 30.6%
Billy Sharp in 2016/17: 30/92 = 32.6%
Billy Sharp in 2015/16: 21/64 = 32.8%
James Beattie in 2007/08: 22/56 = 39.3%
Beattie was a ridiculous signing in hindsight. Like signing someone like Callum Wilson for next season

Keith Edwards 1981-2 35/94: 37.2%
Keith Edwards 1983-4 34/86: 39.5%

Edwards scored 50 per cent of Hull's goals in 1988-9: 26 out of 52.

When Dixie Dean scored his record 60 league goals in a season in 1927-8 the other players managed 42 between them: he had 58.8 per cent.

Not making the podium but Ched Evans is another, 35 out of 92 in 2011/12 = 38%.

Creeps up to 38.8% if you include cup games (40 out of 103).

Edit: gone down a rabbit hole here, if you draw a line in that season from the point where Evans got sent down, he scored 35 out of our 88 league goals = 45.5%. That's proper one-man-team territory in my book.

Second edit - see post below, agree with Revolution that mysterious Wikipedia editor should be shot

Blackman scored a large percentage of our goals in a pretty shit team I seem to remember.

19.6% of the overall but Blackman's is a little bit more remarkable as he left in January. On 29/1/13, the day before Blackman signed for Reading, we'd scored 39 league goals so he was on 28.2%. Same goes for Beattie in 2008/09: on 11/1/09 we'd scored 38 league goals and Beattie had 12 of them (31.6%)

Anyway, thanks to fbref, Wiki and my Excel skills, here's the figures for the last 40 seasons.

EDIT Deane in 1997/98 is another sold with a higher proportion of the team's goals: we'd scored 42 when he left for Benfica on Jan 15th so he had 25% of them.

Imagine attributing this thread for this season!

It would remind me of a story with my Dad once coming home after he’d played cricket for Waleswood.

“How did you get on, son?” My Grandad enquired.

“I top scored. Opened the batting and hit the first ball for 4!”

“Well done. How many did yet get?”

“4! We were all out for 9!”

🤣

Kitson scored 11?! I literally remember 2 goals he scored for us.

Many of the pre 2006 figures are not right, e.g Agana scored 24 league goals in 1989 not 31, and Deano scored 13 not 17 in 1991. That’s FBrefs fault not yours

I wonder how this would look for goal contributions, Palmer has also assisted 9 so 29/61 goal contributions is near enough 50% of all Chelsea goals this season. I'm sure sharp got a fair amount of assists in some of his high scoring seasons too to push his % up.

I took those ones from Wikipedia so I bet they include cup goals...and I didn't save the document before shutting my laptop down last night. Gah.

Philliskirk scored 9 league goals in 87/88
Steve Foley and Peter Beagrie both scored 9 league goals in 86/87
Keith Edwards scored 20 league goals in 85/86 and 13 in 84/85

Re 2004-5, Danny Webber did score 15 league goals, but only 3 for us. The other 12 were for Watford. Andy Gray was sole top scorer.

Blake in 1995-6 isn't right either. I think he scored 12 from memory.

Take 3... Blake was wrong as he scored 4 for Bolton that season after moving in December 1995. He'd scored 12 of our 31 prior to that move (38.7%).

Yeah - and if VAR had been in operation he would have scored about 40.
