To celebrate our Porcine neighbours reaching the heady heights of League One (and just for a bit of fun). That recent Doyle thread got me thinking about our best 11 from the League One days pre-Wilder... we had some decent players here and there and i wonder if cobbled together, we'd have something resembling a decent Championship team at the time

For starters we could have had a midfield of

Lee Williamson
Conor Coady
Stephen Quinn
Jamie Murphy

That's not bad to start with, and I'd take that over Fleck, Norwood and Lundstram on their form over the last 18 months.

These are the players i remember liking the most at the time, pretty decent team except for RM/GK... i do remember us having trouble in those two positions for a few years... JCR comes to mind in RM for example... a player in the Burke mould

Howard
Brayford - Maguire - Coady - Harris
Flynn - Doyle - McDonald - Murphy
Sharp - Adams

Most of the squad would be from the 11/12 season

Howard
Lowton - Maguire - Coady - Jean-Francois
Williamson - Mcdonald- Quinn - Murphy
Evans - Cresswell

Subs: Simonsen - Porter - Kitson- Flynn - Montgomery - Basham - Baxter
how we didn't get promoted at the 1st ask with that squad... incredible L1 team looking back.. that back 4 and midfield aint half bad at all!

Got to put Ched in for that one season alone over Adams, I dont think Adams played up top for us really was more of a winger and sure Coady played CM.

Players who pre-dated Wilder:

GK: Mark Howard (best of a very mediocre bunch unless I'm forgetting someone obvious)

CB: Connor Coady (admittedly didn't play there til Wolves IIRC)
CB: Harry Maguire
CB: Chris Basham

RWB: Matt Lowton
LWB: Jamie Murphy (shoe-horned but I'm sure he could figure it out at that level ;) )

MF: Stephen Quinn
MF: Kevin McDonald
MF: Lee Williamson

FW: Che Adams
FW: Billy Sharp

Not bad really. Reckon even Weir could've got that into the top two.

That side would won the Current league one title at a canter.

I think peak Brayford was probably better than peak Lowton (in their League 1 performances for us). Same with Ched V Adams. But yep, that's a pretty decent XI!

Please use its proper definition: Division 3,sounds a lot better.😅😅.
They certainly did bring a smidging of sunshine to what was a awful season.

I think you're being extremely generous with mediocre!

You're right. With respect to Simon Moore, the fact that he was immediately a massive upgrade on every other keeper we'd had in the previous 6 years (and maybe longer) really said a lot about those other keepers.

Keeper and maybe left-back / LWB are I think the only positions where we didn't have a player who would have been (or went on to be) comfortably good enough for the level above.

For other positions, I haven't even mentioned Coutts and Kieron Freeman on the grounds that they were both pants before Wilder arrived.

i often think that actually that is overlooked, because of dean hammond, that Coutts is loved now. but if Hammond was enemy number 1, coutts was certainly number 2

you know what this was much tougher than i thought, had to leave out some good players i thought would be easily in the 1st team. to say it was team full of "failures" bar them 2 wembley trips. i think that team would be very good in the championship never L1

Which was the home game where Maguire wiped out half of our defence with one heavy challenge?
Williamson I would not pick. Sent off and suspended regularly, injured quite a bit. First chance he had, fooked off. Think he really owed us some performances.
And didn't.

Was it the Wednesday game 2-2 their equaliser. Seem to remember Harry wiped out a few defenders plus the keeper in his haste to clear it , then watch it trickle over the line?. Could be wrong though ,usually am.

Don't think so Blade.com. Jean Francois was one of the fatalities. We need Silent Blade, he'll know.

Don't forget we had Beattie as well. Plonker got sent off last game of season & banned from play off final. I know he wasn't at the peak of his career but I still believe he would have been a concern for Huddersfield.

I think it was a Wednesday player (Madine?) out jumping and taking out Simonsen. A proper keeper would have led with his knee and wiped out the forward (Paddy Kenny was very adept at this), not Simo though!
