I'm sure they are still on our books but best give 'em a run out

Missed the last half hour of the first half (just missed our first goal) but from what I saw we looked very decent. Pluses include Donavon, Philips, Cannon scoring but once again I'd give Callum MOTM for his nonstop running and intelligent play. Excellent all round team performance. Respect to the fans who made the trip too, noisy and a good variety of songs

The Carabao Cup third round draw be held at the conclusion of Preston vs Everton, which kicks off at 8pm BST on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

If we are successful tonight:

The third round draw will be broadcast live on Sky Sports following Preston North End’s meeting with Everton on Wednesday, August 26.

Ball numbers for the match winners and the rest of the draw will be announced on EFL channels on the morning of Wednesday, August 26.

The EFL has confirmed special conditions will apply because of clashes with the expanded European fixture calendar.

The draw will feature 32 clubs – the 23 winners from the second round alongside the nine Premier League sides competing in UEFA competitions.
The first eight ties drawn will involve the eight clubs affected by European competition, with their home or away status already determined.
Each will be drawn against a club from the remaining teams - meaning UEFA teams cannot meet - before the final eight ties are drawn normally.
Brighton, who may enter the Conference League, will not be affected by the conditions because that competition does not begin until October.

A pre-draw, at around 7.20pm on Wednesday, will determine whether the eight UEFA clubs involved will play their third rounds at home or away.
The main draw is expected to take place at around 10.15pm, after Preston’s tie against Everton, which will determine the complete line up of 16 ties.

Carabao Cup third round ties will be played across the weeks beginning September 7 and September 14, with UEFA games also played in this period.

Just a way of giving the big boys an easier path.

Always saying the European teams play too many games in a season, but yet they give them a seeded path through the cup too 🤔

I wonder what happens if we draw, say, Sunderland. W/c Sept 7th, we have a league game in midweek and w/c Sept 14th, they have a Europa League game in midweek. Surely they wouldn't postpone our league game for a Carabao Cup match?

They should just take teams playing in Europe out of this cup, eases congestion and makes it slightly more competitive as a 3rd tier competition after PL and FA cup.

They can dress it up in any fancy words and phrases they want, I call it match fixing.

With the National League being more competitive, I would personally like the league cup to be a lower league tournament, yes you might not bring in the big gates or corporate funding until later, but the Wembley prize winner gets £100,000 which is very poor. I would drop the European place to the next spot in the PL and have Champ, League 1 & 2 and National league sides in the competition. Another good chance to get to Wembley.

Terrible idea.

Would completely ruin the competition and remove any prestige of winning it.

Or scrap it altogether, teams playing reserves, poor prize money (£7k) for last night's win and saves supporters cash in these testing times

To be fair, I wouldn't be against that idea either, ultimately we will have to put out our best X1 to stand a chance against any top half Premiership reserve side and even then we could be battered. It's the usual suspects most years.

Agree, top clubs only get interested in the latter stages and surely they could do without it

I reckon they should make it 'opt in' for clubs. Then you'd get rid of the teams who can't be arsed- Mowbray said last night that they didn't need to bother trying to win the game. Supporters would give their clubs hell for opting out I imagine, but at least then you wouldn't need to bother going to a game your manager doesn't give a shit about winning

People are grown up enough to make their own decisions, you're not forced to go to football matches, if you're struggling with money and going to football matches that's on you.

For me the cup early rounds are the only time I get to away matches, due to how cheap they are, had a good evening/night out with 6 of us, very rarely do we all get to go to away matches together due to everyone having varying loyalty points

North / South divide also helps with travelling costs in the early rounds.

Spurs away could net us may be half a million funny looking 20p
People not appreciating the size of relative problems is always funny to see. Have a guess at how long that half a million would last based on typical Championship losses.

If you said it would run out somewhere between the Bolton and Norwich games, give yourself a gold star

Bring the 8 playoff teams from the national league into the cup to replace the European teams.
The game of the season of all 5 divisions last year was Rochdale York, it went global as football fans the world over recognised its unreal drama -something only football seems to do. Let's show off the strengths of our league system at the expense of the European corporate teams.

You would also need to remove the path into Europe you get for winning it then. I've said for years that the solution is to just have this comp for the Football League 72 and then scrap the Auto Windscreens Shield

Edit - LBA beat me to the punch on this one
