From The Star.....
SHEFFIELD United are campaigning for Bramall Lane to be included on the list of possible World Cup venues, The Star can reveal.
Kevin McCabe, the club's plc chairman, believes there is a compelling case for the stadium to form part of England's bid to host the tournament in 2018 and, as a mark of his commitment, has pledged to include any specifications laid down by the organisers in the on-going development of the ground. United, who confirmed the signing of former Glasgow Rangers, Middles-brough and Aston Villa centre-half Ugo Ehiogu ahead of today's Steel City derby at Hillsborough, aim to exploit their rich history and ambitious expansion plans to push themselves to the forefront of the FA's tender.
McCabe said: "Sheffield must be a part of the World Cup if it comes here and Bramall Lane being a venue makes perfect sense. All we want to know is what the criteria are?
"We have asked and we are waiting to hear. If it is 35,000 capacity then we can do it. If it is a 40,000 capacity then we can do that too.
"If it is more, then we might have to change what we do with the Kop but it is still possible."
McCabe added: "It would seem strange not to include Sheffield and Bramall Lane, which is the home of football after all, in the bid.
"The rules of football were drawn-up a stones-throw away from Bramall Lane and the original handwritten copy is in our museum at United.
"Sheffield FC, the world's oldest football club, played some of their earliest games here. Even Pele, the world's greatest ever footballer, visited us at United last year.
"Anyone who visits Bramall Lane can see that it is a high class stadium that's getting even better."
