The Baxter behind a target man combination seems to work ok (not great) at home, providing Murphy and Flynn are on form in the wide positions. Teams who come to the Lane often defend deep, which means there's not a lot of space to run into anyway. Based on home form (and home goals scored) we'd be mid table.

But in away games I feel we're really missing pace up front. We've scored 8 away goals this season, which is the worst in the division. Porter/Paynter can win flick ons and Baxter is good at playing through balls, but who's going to run onto them? They are all slow. When we're not threatening the space behind defences we make it so much easier for them and we become predictable, slow, ponderous. Not only that, when home teams find us easy to deal with they can focus more on attacking and throw more players forward, leading to more pressure on the defence.

0-3 defeats to Crewe may make managers think they need to shore up things defensively. But if reports are right, we didn't create anything going forward yesterday, and I think we have to think again regarding our strikers. Sometimes you can compensate for an obvious weakness temporarily, but in the long run you tend to get found out.

We've got Shaun Miller, but he's sadly not showed that he's regained his form after his injury and we can't rely on him. I don't like relying on loans, but without a pacey goalscorer I think we'll continue to struggle to score goals away from home.

Neil Warnock used to say 'you can never have too many strikers'. Although he may have taken it too literally himself, it's a piece of advice the Blades have neglected completely. The last two seasons United have found themselves going into crunch end of season games with no decent, pacey striker available. Let's make sure it doesn't happen again. The loan window opens on February the 8th.

Old Harry Redknapp signed 4 strikers on deadline day because he lost his main striker.

Could not agree more. Most centre halves know they've got the afternoon off when we roll up at their grounds.

We have no pest who won't let them rest.

I've been saying this since day one of this season.

I know not everyone sees it this way but it's the most glaring issue for me.

I feel sorry for Baxter, I don't think he should be doing that role away from home but who else is there - no one.

Aye, must have been awful for him having to amble round passing to the opposition yesterday.

At least he didn't do a Porter though, winning balls putting himself about and trying to bring others into play.

Talking of strikers, Porter is better than Paynter. I'm not saying Porter is good, far from it, but he did more in his 10 minutes yesterday that Paynter in his 80.

Paynter is not the answer, but who is??

I didn't go yesterday and maybe Baxter didn't play up front. My point was he shouldn't be played up front away from home we need someone who is constantly working their back four. We need someone like Jack Lester when he dropped down divisions to play for Chesterfield. No defender would think they are in for an easy ride against someone like that.

I know you love Porter but he will not score enough goals or create goals for others. Looking at the early scores for Paynter it sounds like he was abysmal.

If our away form continues as it is, we will go down.

spot on again bergs, strikers and goals is what we haven't had for so long. our away form is about as bad as it gets, cant believe he got rid of taylor and brandy even tho they haven't been great this season at least they had pace, oh and brandys started scoring for Walsall already. we are heading down barring a complete change in personal and tactics.

With the current players we have, in away games I'd start with Scougall playing off Porter. Not that Paynter won anything for him to feed off but Baxter was a total passenger. Scougall is at least a nuisance both with and without the ball.

Agree we need another option up front and we also need a replacement (or a back up) for Doyle as we're too soft without him (a problem made worse with McMahon departing as well).

Thought Miller was supposed to add that sort of option?

For some reason he's not been able to regain his form yet, certainly when it comes to scoring goals. Rob Hulse looked excellent in the Premiership in 2006/07, but failed to score in 24 games in the division below when he returned in 2007/08. He then started scoring again after joining Derby. Maybe Miller is similar and we shouldn't expect too much from him?

I thought the sharpest Miller has looked was when he came on v Bradford but he's not got on the pitch since.
