I’m always interested in hearing rumours and gossip, even if to start with I then take most of it with a pinch of salt.

What I’m trying to establish is in this case is:-
What did Warnock say before the Wigan match?
Which player or player(s) did he offend by saying it?
Who was trying to strangle him before the police stepped in?

As you posted the story, surely you must remember the gist of what this bloke Bulmer (Auntie B / Leigh Bromby) said happened?

If you can try and put a bit more flesh on the bones then we can all make our own minds up about how much truth there is likely to be in it?

It was a while back but I really need to get some work done but this is approximately what was said by Bulmer at the time.
Morning of Wigan match; Warnock went to the board demanding a contract for the next season as his was running out. The board (of which Sean Bean was a member) would have none of it standing their ground saying they wanted to discuss it after the season was over as they don't know what division they are in.
Warnock at his pre-match talk states that he doesn't care what they do when they go out as he is not there next season anyway. One of the players incensed by this grabs Warnock by the throat (can't remember which this is a few years ago) the police outside were quickly ushered in as there was a scramble in the dressing room to sort it out. The police get some sort of calm and then the players come out to play in the most important match in our recent history.
That is the gist of it really.

All of which wasn't reported on at the time? The Sky cameras and team there wouldn't have heard the scramble or seen the police rushing into the dressing room? No player leaked it to the media immediately afterwards to feed into the already-reported post-match Bean incident? It is obvious that Warnock felt aggrieved at not having a more secure contract, but I think that this story, and it's lack of any coverage, is quite improbable.

Its upto you to believe what you like. Not everything gets out. Its likely that there were apologies and such sort and that everyone calmed down and they all agreed to say nothing I don't know. All I do know is that was said by Bulmer who had Bromby as a source at the time, and was very accurate with his statements about the club. Whether it is likely or unlikely is upto you to decide.
To me at the time it explained the body language of the players as they came on the pitch as they didn't look up for it at all. They got more into it as the match went on especially the second half.

Must have been John Stead then as he put his knackers on the line for us that day as well as his noggin.

Thanks for relaying the entertaining story.

It seems to me a little far-fetched for the reasons that Loughborough Blade has mentioned but also because:-

1) Why would Warnock seriously say he didn’t care about the result? Keeping us up would have been a major boost to his CV whether or he intended to stay or not.

2) Why would he demand they offer him a new contract hours before the match without knowing what division we would be in? They’re hardly going to thrash out a new deal there and then. He would obviously be in a far stronger bargaining position after the match, with safety assured. If not, he knew his card was marked anyway.

3) At least three of the players (including Bromby) went on to play for Warnock at other teams. Doesn’t suggest that the contempt for Warnock was particularly heartfelt and widespread.

If it’s true to any extent at all. I can imagine Warnock trying to take the pressure off by joking about not being too bothered and somebody’s taken it the wrong way.

1) Warnock was I presume "not happy" when he came down from the directors. Bearing in mind he had reason to believe that he was not welcome in the future. That ones easy spur of the moment Warnock's speciality.
2) Because he wanted the money? His only bargaining tool left? Because he knew they were pissed off with him and wanted him out hence no talks of a contract before not even two one in the prem one in the championship nothing. He could have used the last game as a last ditch attempt.
3) Just because Bromby mentioned it doesn't mean he disliked the guy and secondly, as I previously mentioned there was probably loads of apologies and calming down and its out the open now type discussions to try to remedy the situation.
Footballers are not fans they don't get heartfelt about clubs unless they came through the ranks and supported the team as a kid. They see it as their job and the manager is their boss. Its a bad day at the office story.

But this is how it was stated at the time, from a guy who was very reliable with information.

Of course he didn't care? Even if it was just for the money.

The score line states that they were one very decent strike better than us - that's it.
They kept the ball better once Elliot had stunned everyone with that perfect strike. Yes we had to defend well but the lads stood up to the test on that front. Defending well is still part of football. Otherwise there would be no point in lesser teams even trying.
In fact we should have had a pen in the first half - a stonewaller when Alexander clipped Howard - then the Walker incident in the second. Decisions change games. Admittedly we didn't have the class to score a goal form open play as we were light on strikers for a PoF (yet again) but to say that Mike Dean didn't have any adverse affect on that game as far as SUFC were concerned and that it was all down to Burnley's class over ours - I just can't agree.

We did not look like scoring a goal for the whole of that match. Burnley scored one more than us and came very close on other occasions.

Our defence was our only plus point in that match and it is only thanks to them (plus Montgomery's goal line clearance) that we were saved from a heavier defeat.

Defending is part of the game, but it only means anything if you have the ability to score as well. We were absolutely hopeless going forward and would not have scored if the match was still being played today.

Yes, the record book says it was 1-0, but anyone at that game could see that Burnley were not troubled by us at all. One goal was all they needed.

In the 2005-6 promotion season we beat Wednesday by a mere 1-0, but the gulf between the sides was there for all to see. At no stage were we ever going to lose that game.

A 1-0 scoreline does not mean a side is just one decent strike better.

You could tell in the first 15 minutes against Burnley that it wasn't working.

We never turned up against Burnley. The most disappointing part for me was how well we played against Preston in the second leg compared to the Wembley performance. The two Kyles were superb attacking full backs and the lynch pins in the semi, Wembley was such an anti climax, quickly followed by the annual McCabe fire sale of the two best prospects at the club.

No forwards = no outlet - you can only have wing backs working effectively if there is a focal point to work towards.

I refer you to point one of my answer. Why does Warnock shout at refs when it would be more prudent to shut up? Winding up refs and then wondering why they give crap decisions against him.
He probably wasn't in a reflective mood after getting what was essentially the push. It was obvious they didn't want him. So for him to calm down and give the team talk of his life when he feels as though he has been let down by the board may not have been in his mind.

He has mentioned SUFC, he was asked in an interview early on in his Everton career if a goal he scored was his best ever to which he answered he scored a couple that were better for us. But the fact of the matter is this. Jagielka is not from Sheffield. The Blades gave him a chance and he took it in the same way that we ditched Kevin Davies and he took a chance with Chesterfield, does that mean that Kev Davies should laud Chesterfield at every opportunity? If they invited him to go back there I'm sure he would for talks and presentations when he retires as a former player. We saw something in Jags that we could utilise and we did, its not a charity, and Jags grabbed his chance and therefore made his career kick off.
Did he deliberately cheat in the Wigan match? maybe. Was it done to relegate us so that he could get a better deal? I doubt it, it was split second stuff.
Also there was much more going on that day than just a hand ball. According to Bromby the police had to come in to the dressing room to rescue Warnock from being strangled due to his pre match speech. Its why Sean Bean was so het up due to Warnock demanding a deal that morning bribing the board. The board wanted rid of Warnock after he told them their future after he thought he had the Portsmouth job in the promotion season the previous year and wouldn't offer it to him.
Jags was also kind enough to do a video for the 125 in which he thanked the Blades for getting him where he is today.

Sorry for going off at a tangent. It has just crossed my mind, in important play offs and Wembley appearances, someone always rocked the boat, or upset the ref pre match. We had Warnock with his alleged contract demands. We had a fall out in the club about Windyass and the golf course, a number two in one, or so we were told. Then we had the other Clown winding up Mike Dean pre match, as a result we got bugger all when there was a sure and certain penalty appeal when Kyle was fouled

No complaints about a certain ref last night?. May be Nige has shown the world that there is a change in our outlook on life.

I don't expect pre match shenanigans on Sunday either. 2-0 Blades.
