He does seem to have ability at passing a ball aswell.

But midfield is completely different from being a centre back.

At the back he knows there is no one behind him and when he goes forward any options are infront of him.

Mind compared to the other options we have it can't be any worse.

A holding midfield sat in front of the back 4 isnt much different at all.
