Kelly for me every time. His shot stopping was as good as, if not better than Kenny's but he was less prone to the odd rush of blood and error.

You serious?

Kelly obviously, Kenny shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence.

Much as Kenny's a great keeper, Big Al was world class. He's my call.

His transfer was the perfect description of how United were run at the time.

Once upon a time, I was on my way to work, and changing buses at Manor Top saw <a famous United employee> buying flowers for his missus. He looked sheepish. I don't know if he'd done owt wrong or not.

The usual banter/insults happened, but he then said that Big Al had said "When's the leaving party then?"

Now at this time, <said employee> and various others had buggered off to Hull as they were less than impressed with the way that United was being run under Mr MacDonald.

<A famous employee's> reply was "I'm staying in Sheffield you daft chuff!"

Big Al's reply was, "No my one. I've been sold to Aberdeen.". Apparently what had happened was that Big Al had gone to Aberdeen, been offered really good terms, but had returned to the Lane and said "Nope. Great offer, but my family are happy here, and I love my home in the Peak, and I can still easily reach my family in Lancashire."

He was told in no uncertain terms, "Tough. You're going."

Within two weeks, he was number two at Blackburn.

This was the first time that Hull thought things would work well. Hinchliffe was there. The United staff returned quickly!

To answer the first question, Alan Kelly without doubt.

To follow-on from Sensi's reply....either Alan Hodgkinson or the greatly under-rated Tom McAllister, both better than any of the other mentioned keepers and I only saw the back-end of Hodgy's career.

It's gotta be Alan Kelly. Kenny is good, but you can't put him in the same bracket as Kelly im afraid.

The choice between Kelly and Kenny is as easy to make as the choice between Kelly and a small tin of sardines. You might like both, but you know which one in their prime you'd rather have in goal. I like Paddy, but Alan Kelly is arguably the best goalkeeper United have had since Hodgy. I'd put Simon Tracey above Paddy too.

We were unbelievably spoilt for keepers at one stage. Tracey. Kelly. Rees.
These 3 were some of the clubs best keepers of all time. They're up there with Fatty foulkes and Hodgkinson.
So my answer to the question is Kelly before paddy.
However for me, Trace then Kelly!

Check out number 7 from this thread. Rees showed amazing potential, but was sadly never to make it, Tracey was good, but Kelly was better than them, and much as I like Paddy, all three were better than him. Not that he's not good, but those three were excellent.

I'd put Kelly in the "Top 3 United keepers" along with Hodgy and Foulkes.

For me the best keeper I saw at the lane was Tom McAllister thats probably because I was fairly young and things seem better from your memory, you know sunny summers etc, also Mervyn Day was class. We have had some good keepers over the years.
