Hi, Rovers fan wanting to inform you about Treacy. I thought (with a little glee) that I might dampen your hopes - but a cursory glance through this board and there's not much to dampen, I see! But cynicism is a necessary protection for football fans - and certainly the case here with Mr Treacy.
He's Irish, he's a left winger and he's played a few games for Rovers first team. He was one of those youth players that people were getting excited about when he just a teenager playing for the U18 side.
HOWEVER:
Sadly, he ain't that good. At the moment, anyway.
Strengths:
Pace - when he was first promoted to first team duties, initially by Mark Hughes, and then in a more concerted fashion last season, by the hapless Paul Ince, Treacy looked quite promising. We have a trundling Norwegian boyband escapee called Gamst who plays on our left wing. Treacy came on for him and started doing things that we hadn't see for a long time - he actually got the ball, pushed it down the line, ran past the full back AND crossed the ball. We fans were like, WOW!
Here endeth the Strengths.
Weaknesses
Injuries - Only one thing has matched Treacy's early hype and that's his injury record. He seemed to always get injured when he was a reserve player. Last season, however, his body seemed to hold together for a reasonable length of time - so maybe he's over his ailments.
No vision - Think Keith Gillespie, without the passing acumen. After Treacy's useful cameos, he got a few starts for Rovers. It was then that his limitations were fully exposed. When on the ball, if he cannot run down the wing, he is at a loss as to what to do. So, he usually goes for goal from wild angles and distances - and misses. Lack of vision is his biggest weakness.
Cannot use his right foot - I feel harsh citing this as a weakness as many good left wingers can't use their right foot but you can't help noticing it with Treacy - and getting frustrated, when he dawdles on the ball and a simple right footed pass is on.
Big Time Charlie - Treacy thinks that he's special and is known to sulk when his specialness is not given due respect. Allegedly, he lacks humility.
Thin - He may have bulked up from last season but from what we saw, he lacked strength and was easily discouraged by a kick from a full back.
Conclusion:
Poor man's Keith Gillespie. I read that you might be signing Julian Gray or Glenn Little, so perhaps you won't see much of Treacy. My gut feeling is that he won't make an impression with your team.
However, I would just say in service to fairness, Treacy has received good reviews from the Ireland U21 management (likened to Kevin Doyle by one person) and was, at one stage, a fairly regular goalscorer for our reserves. Perhaps, he's got some potential in him that he is yet to show - and maybe Blackwell will get the best out of him.
We'll see!
