There is absolutely no way on this earth Wilson will run with a 19 year old as first choice gk and a 17 year old as back up gk

Wilson will not risk this in what is the most important position on the pitch and that is regardless of how good both Georges are

.....Or Hodgys??? He'll be twiddling his thumbs now i'd imagine!!!:)

The strange thing is with 2 days to go ive not heard a whisper. Maybe hell start on saturday and depending on how it go's that will determine the loan. My personal opinon is that we need a lone in. Its not the fact about him being ready or not but if he gets sent off or injured then we ar completry fucked in probably the most important area of the pitch

Long did well on sat, but he also did well in his first appearance last season against MK Dons.......then we played one of the division's weaker teams at home and shipped 4. Deja vu anyone?

I think this time around feels more positive - he got his place due to an injury to Howard, not Simmo being dropped to make him get his act together, so consequently less pressure on Long this time around. Also, our defence seem a bit more solid as a unit and that should help.

Loved it on Saturday - took 2 non-Blades friends along, and they were both saying how terrible Long looked as he was being peppered with shots in the warm-up (ridiculous criticism to begin with), then he came on and pulled off the wonder save!

As a permanent fixture, of course not. But given we could probably bring in another keeper at a day's notice in the event Long gets an injury/suspension, why the rush? Have Willis be essentially the emergency backup on the bench, and get someone else in if something happens to Long. Makes obvious sense if we're strapped for cash.

It's remarkable that we were comfortable enough to have no keeper on the bench in the Premiership when Jags went in goal vs Arsenal, but the thought of having a 17 year old actual keeper on the bench for a few League 1 games is deemed a crazy idea.

Agree. George Willis is 18 btw.

It's remarkable that we were comfortable Warnock was stupid enough to have no keeper on the bench in the Premiership when Jags went in goal vs Arsenal

Fixed it for you.

Did that ever cost us any points out of interest? Can't remember any fans being that bothered about it, given the faith people had in Jags to fill in if required.

The only time I can recall it going tits up was when we lost 3-0 at Plymouth in Feb 2005

I can recall Jags going in goal in three victories - 2-1 v Palace in Aug 03, 2-1 v Millwall in Dec 04 and the Arsenal game and in all of them he spent substantal periods in goal.

I think I read somewhere that his record in goal was P5 W3 D1 L1 (though I stand to be corrected on this) which is no worse than you would expect from a specialist sub keeper.

Yeh, the Plymouth game was the only one where it backfired, and United were already losing and playing dreadfully anyway.

It has cost us points in other seasons, notably under Kendall: the 2-3 defeat at home to Norwich in 1996-7 and the draw at Ipswich the following year spring to mind.

The Palace game was a real backs to the wall victory as Brown got sent off as well as Kenny getting injured. The team were excellent, though, and Palace hardly had a serious goal attempt.

We were lucky in those instances. That's not to take anything away from Jags, he performed competently in a completely unfamiliar position when called upon and he deserved credit for that.

Apart from one he pushed over the bar against Arsenal, I dont recall him having a save of any note to make in the games that we won. I reiterate however that he did the basics well and still deserves credit for stepping up and doing it.

Am I missing one game when he went in goal and we drew? I can't remember and it is bothering me

:-)

Looking at an earlier thread where this was discussed, I think the full list for the last 30 years is:

Alan Young vs Millwall in 1982-3
Glenn Cockerill vs Luton in 1985-6 (league cup)
Paul Stancliffe vs West Brom in 1987-8
John Pemberton vs Liverpool in 1990-1
Roger Nilsen vs Norwich in 1996-7
Don Hutchison vs Ipswich in 1997-8
Shaun Derry vs Portsmouth in 1997-8
Phil Jagielka vs Palace in 2003-4
Phil Jagielka vs Millwall in 2004-5
Phil Jagielka vs Plymouth in 2004-5
Phil Jagielka vs Arsenal in 2006-7

I can't recall it happening since Jags left, but I may be wrong...

Perhaps they should bring in a rule where if your goalie gets sent off, he cannot be replaced with the sub goalkeeper. That should liven things back up a bit....

Thanks, what is interesting from that is that, apart from Young, Jags is the only one where we have won when a part time goalie was called upon (and Young only went in for the last 5 mins when we were winning 2-0 and he still managed to concede 1).

Yes, that's right. As for the others:

Cockerill: went in for 20 minutes when we were already losing, conceded one. Burridge came back and finished the game
Stan: did the second half when we were losing 0-2 already. Lost 4-0
Pemberton: Let in all 3, didn't he? Fair play to him for having a go but I suspest we might have got a point had Tracey not got injured. Terrible mistake for the third goal.
Nilsen: the main reason we lost, as he basically gave them two goals (one an own goal by Holdsworth for which he was also at fault). I will never understand why he was given the jersey.
Hutchison: we were winning when he went in. Let a late equaliser in but made a couple of saves before that and did okay. I suspect we would have won had he not had to go in goal though (even though it was during our shocking run at Ipswich)
Derry: didn't have a lot to do, really, but kept a clean sheet for 45 minutes in that crazy game.

I remember watching the Ipswich game on Sky and my hazy memory is that we were winning 2-1 with about 5 mins to go when Ipswich knocked a free kick into the area and Hutchison rushed out to claim a ball he was never going to get and should have been left to the defenders. It was knocked past him and that was that.

Pemberton did let in all 3 and I have a story about that game. I was driving up to Sheffield all ready to watch our first game in the top division for 14 years, when I crashed the car on the M1 just outside Leicester! Undeterred by that minor mishap, I got the car to a garage and got my dad to pick me up. We drove up listening to the game on the radio and got to the Lane just after half time. It was 0-0 when we got out of the car and we were let onto the Kop and walked up to the back, just in time to see Deane smash one in. Yes 1-0!!!!

A bit later Liverpool scored, bugger 1-1, we thought. I then chanced to look at the old scoreboard which said H1 A2. It then dawned upon us that Liverpool had scored between us leaving the car and entering the ground....

Now there are 7 subs you should always name a keeper as a sub.

There is talk of Darren Ward coming out of retirement to warm the bench. I would say thats the way to go if Long is going to be given a run in the team. How many times do you need to swap keepers mid game? not very often

Most important position in the team and in the past we've had sum gud uns.

God help us.

Wilson has ruled out Darren Ward, it won't happen. I recommend that they wait until after the International break to get the standard of keeper we need. George should be OK for this Saturday at least. It's his shirt to win, let's see how much he wants it

Out of favour Aberdeen keeper Jason Brown is being lined up.

Very short for a keeper. Never really established himself over the last few years.
