Keeping possession is the key thing in the prem, lose it and you're often punished, lose it in the championship and you get away with it
 
Frustrated tonight because we were well in that at times, but yet again defensive brainfarts, and the inability to pass the ball 5 yards to a team mate when in attack, handed that result to them on a plate.

Still, we go again.
 
We do, but the bigger issue is giving goals away. We weren't a possession team last season either, but we weren't gifting the opposition goals every game.
 
Yep. First thing tomorrow morning I'd get us down to Specsavers because the amount of times we passed straight to them was ridiculous.

I know two games in a week is exposing us but fuck me, we're sloppy.

Lowe and Bryan were vulnerable all night and that channel between them was hit again and again. Only a matter of time one of them dropped a bollock.

We really are bring knives to a gun fight starting PL games with Bryan, Lowe, Norwood...
 
If we'd got anything from that game it would have constituted daylight robbery!
When McBurnie plays, we play with 10.
Lowe may be a player one day but he is utterly woeful at the moment.
We were poor everywhere and defended too high.

Slightly disagree. Apart from the first goal they created nothing. Unfortunately, after we equalised we spent the next few minutes doing everything we could to gift them another goal. We were successful. If only we'd have put the same effort into trying to score at the other end. I'm a bit pissed off with them tonight.
 
I don't think Chelsea were anywhere near at their best tonight. Maybe a bit of that is down to us but they didn't have to be. They were comfortable after the first 10 minutes and could/should have scored more.

I just think they were so so comfortable. They could have scored whenever they wanted if they turned it on but they were so comfortable in possession and we had such little threat they could pick their moments.

I think we looked better against Man U, City and Liverpool because of how relentless they are in their attacking, we probably see more of the ball in those games....not that we keep it for long but I think it changes the perception of how dominant a side is against us.

That sounds like a massive contradiction but it makes sense in my head somehow.

I wonder if it made a difference that we maybe thought that we had a good chance of getting a result tonight, whereas we didn't expect anything at Man Utd/Citeh? Different pressures?
Either way, we didn't pass the ball nearly as well tonight. Out retention was woeful. I know you won't agree but I still think that having McBurnie in the side negatively affects our approach in this regard. We seem (on the whole) to want to 'get rid' of it quicker rather actually try to play constructively. And when we 'try to play', we actually aren't that bad!

We make far too many mistakes but the bigger problem is our lack of quality in the final third. Other teams give the ball away but have the players to make up for it. We simply don't.
 



we just havent got the quality to compete at this level we got away with it last season with suprising tactics and no major injuries but unless we can pay higher transfer fees or pay premier league salaries we cant survive a lesson for when we get back up

I think we approached the game in the right way tonight. Chelsea were clearly intent on passing it out from the back and I think we did a good job of trying to capitalise on that by putting them under pressure early on. I agree we were sloppy in possession tonight but I think that was more down to us than in previous games where the opposition just hound us as soon as they lose the ball. It’s frustrating watching us lose the ball in some of the positions we do.

I’m torn on McBurnie because I think he will be a great player for us if we use him right however there are elements of his game that frustrate. We play him as a target man which really isn’t his game and I don’t think being tall should automatically be a reason for us playing the way we do with him in the side. He does his best and I think he does okay in that role but he strikes me more of a poacher. I actually think he could potentially be our replacement for Billy Sharp. If you look at the goals he’s scored for us and the ones against us for Swansea and Barnsley, they all come from in and around the penalty spot and six yard box.

We look far better when we’ve got the ball in final third and can get it down. McGoldrick is superb in this role. When McBurnie plays it does get a bit kick and rush and as I say, he does his best but he seems to be knocked off the ball way too easily. If we are to play that way with him, he needs to be stronger, however if we can play him up front with someone who can get us playing in the final third I’m sure he’ll come good. I’d have liked to have seen how he played with Mark Duffy actually. He’ll be an important player for us in the Championship will McBurnie.

Makes me wonder if it's worth getting back up apart from taking the TV money and sponserships, if we can't pay the wages as well as transfer fees from a supporters view personally this season as been painfull as it gets week after week of losing wares you down.

I can agree with some of that but, for me, he'll never replace Billy. Billy is a 'live wire striker'. He has that intuition in the box, knows the game and knows how to pressure a defender into making a mistake. He's also a natural finisher and knows how to get the fans going. I personally hope to see Brewster more in this role in the future. Poor start, I know, but he looks talented and isn't afraid to shoot. I think he'll be great for us next season. Might have a few quid on him topping the goal scoring charts next season.

I genuinely don't know where McBurnie's strengths are or where we would play him. I wanted us to sign him and would love to see him do well but he completely infuriates me! His on-field persona, his languid movement, everything! Burke might not be great on the ball but he gives it everything and his closing down is excellent so he gets respect.

I hope he does well in the Championship next season as we know, at least, that we have top performers at that level. No excuses. But I do have concerns that McB will not help our fluidity going forward. He just doesn't have any footballing instincts on or off the ball. We'll see.
Agree on Didsy. Our best player, even now. I hope he enjoys another season in the Championship and holds up physically. Playing behind a front two with what we have at the moment in that division could be fun to watch. Lets hope it works out like that for us. Yeah maybe a Sharp replacement is a bit steep haha, but I think from seeing McBurnie in the Championship for other clubs, his strengths seem to be in the penalty area. It seems strange as I’m sure Wilder must have signed him on the basis of what he’s seen in his games against us and other teams in the Championship.

I know what you mean about his persona, he looks like he’s ambling around the pitch without a care in the world. I know where I’d like to see him play and how I’d like us to use him but I hope we can try using him more effectively before he’s written off completely. He is still young though and I’m sure he has a lot still to learn. Wilder keeps playing him so he must see something in him.

My only worry for Didzy and Sharp is their age but I love them both. Time seems to slow down when McGoldrick has the ball and he seems to have all the time in the world on it. And as you say Sharp is just instinctive, if we’re creating chances, he will score goals for days.

I thought Lowe was the weak link. Bryan won every header and tackle he went for first half. Disappointed for him about the back pass as up to that point he'd been pretty decent.

Totally. Lowe was awful. He rivalled Norwood for the award of worst player on the pitch.

Bryan was tidy, but sadly at this level one mistake does cost goals...

I know where you are coming from but you've always got to have for the top otherwise what's the point in competitive sport?

When we go down, I want us to bounce back at the first attempt and come back to the PL a stronger squad.

That said, I can't wait to get this season over and done with. I'm hating it. Losing virtually every week with poor negative tactics and about 7 players missing every game through injury. It's been a shit show from start to finish and it does wear you down. 15 games to go, and then I will have a black celebration and think 'thank fuck that's over'. Awful season.

During the pre season I might start pulling a perfectly healthy single tooth out of my mouth every Saturday or Sunday afternoon with a pair of pliers, just to keep up the weekend enjoyment I've felt watching United this season.

15 of the fuckers to go....

Swansea are one of the best fluent "footballing" sides the Championship has seen for years.

They incorporated McBurnie into it quite well.

Maybe McBurnie just can't play "chase the boring fucking hoof upfield" very well.

Couldn't agree more.
He certainly isn't any good at all in whatever system we seem to adopt or play when he's in the team.
What he did at Swansea is completely irrelevant as we aren't Swansea and I don't think any of us care what they have done or are doing. We also got promoted above them two years ago (I know they beat us twice!) so they weren't better than us then over the season.
We/I can only comment on what we see of him in a Blades shirt, playing for us, in a system of our management's choosing.
It obviously stands to reason he - and anyone else for that matter - will look much better playing for a team who dominate possession in the Championship, be it Swansea or (hopefully) us next season.
I certainly hope so because, in my opinion, this season he looks unfit, poorly motivated, and completely lacking in any obvious ability. In short, crap!

I think that is taking a very positive view, at times.
At others, we were desperately trying to hang onto their coat tails.
They are most definitely not a favourite team of mine, but the gulf in class zanzis ability was exactly that - a gulf.

I think they spray it around well, Werner is also a real handful and for periods it felt like they were toying with us. But honestly, I lost count of the times that we wrestled back possession, only to pass the ball straight back to them and hand them back the advantage. It was back to how we were playing many weeks ago, where we treated the ball like a hot potato.

They are a good team, but honestly I thought they were there for the taking last night, especially their defence.

Agreed, If we'd have had all 11 players playing to 7/10 last night we'd have got a point. They were very average and uninspiring.
 



yes when your only likely to get 30% possesion against these teams you just cant pass it back to em when you get the ball and we did that all night add to that the fact we seem to want too much time on the ball and you just havent got that luxury at this level
