Records Smecords!!!

I don't care about beating club records, the only thing that is important to me is that United have not been beaten this season in the league and the longer it goes on the more it will intimidate teams into the (mistaken belief?) that we are better than we are and keep us at or near the top of the league.

As a sensible football fan we got beaten at Wembley end of, the season started against the Shrews and that is when I am working from?

Now can we stop bickering about this and get back to some real arguments about Hotels, freeholds and real ale?

Why are you bothered if you take no notice of what the official statistics say?
How many league goals do you think we scored last season? 92, 93 or 100?

Eh? You've lost me

Let me try and simplify it for you then ;)
You said that the convention of excluding penalty shootouts from official statistics is wrong.

Last season Man City were "officially" the top goalscorers in Britain with 93 league goals.
If United fans went around bragging that we actually overtook them by scoring SEVEN more "goals" in the play-off final, we'd quite rightly be laughed at.

Being given 11 free shots at goal and managing to score from 7 of them clearly isn't the same as scoring 7 "proper" goals during the game. That's why they're excluded from all official goalscoring (and other) statistics for both clubs and individual players (Golden Boot awards etc).

I was wondering if you think this is also wrong as you want penalty shootouts included in official statistics.

I'll make things simple for you too ;)

Its off topic from what I said, I was bothered about the result which counts towards the unbeaten run, not how goals are counted in a game or a pen shootout. The rest I'm not really fussed about and whether it counts towards a golden boot... meh, not even slightly interested.

Totally agree - I broke my golden rule of never looking a statistics thread when I got to the orifice this morning, mainly because I lose the will to live after five minutes.

Can we all agree that no-one gives an aerial intercourse about this, it's all in the past, and the only trophy I want is the Division 1 winners.

So please get a life, guys, honestly I've seen more life in a tramp's vest.

George

I'm getting a bit fed up of this to be honest. My view of the Huddersfield game was we drew the game 0-0 and lost a penalty shoot out, that's how its decided, however it's understandable that people say we lost because how didn't we go up if we didn't lose!?

You can think anyway you like, I'm just telling you what the accepted convention is amongst the sad people who concern themselves with these things.

And not just those people. Everyone (apart from you apparently) accepts that the penalty shoot out does not form part of the game. Why was the play off final scored reported as "Huddersfield 0 Sheffield United o: Huddersfiled win 8-7 on penalties" rather than "Huddersfield 8 Sheffield United 7" unless the penalty shoot out is seen as something that takes place outside the game?

Just for the record - I am 100% with SwissBlade on this - as you very well know Mr Statto

so if the penalty shoot out takes place outside the game
the result is 0-0

The result of the game in 90 mins might be a draw but in the debate about the semantics are around an "unbeaten run" no one can deny that we LOST the pen shoot out, therefore the tie was lost. The penalty shoot out being the means of determining who wins or who loses. We lost - therefore our unbeaten run cannot begin before the time line of that game.

Wait a sec... so was Huddersfield's record run last season not as good as everybody thought because they lost 3-0 in the play off final? Nobody seemed to count that game!

Agreed - they lost their play off so I never saw their run as"unbeaten" in the first place.
It's only Statto's that like to perpetuate their view of how important they are when really there is no sginificance watsoever to their contrived facts or their pointless existence (if that's all they care about and labour on about ad nauseum).

Now that I think about it, Huddersfield lost 4 games during their 'incredible' run, unless you don't count the penalties against Bradford in the JPT.

Agreed.
The way that everyone talked about their unbeaten run (yes thats you Look North and Calendar) was cringeworthy

but surely play offs cant be counted in in a run of league games as they are not 90 minute games with points at stake , they are essentially cup ties as they have extra time and penalties
a run of league games surely is a collection of games where points are gathered

play offs by their definition are a knock out cup tournament and do not effect league tables , so are NOT league games
we are therefore unbeaten in our last 17 league encounters , a statement of fact
and have lost only 1 ( and that only 1-0) in our last 27 league games, or more than half a season

we have attained 48 points in our last 23 league games, doubled thats 96 ,
if we manage that again wed have 79 points with 8 games left 5 more than last season at that stage
