With the season starting this Sunday I had a memo from the league last night that Sheffield United Junior Blades had withdrawn from our under 16 league. Don't know how tied in they are with the club these days but its a poor state of affairs. Disappointing from a personal point of view as we had Sheffield FC ,Stocksbridge Steels and some other good sides in our league this year.

Yes start of the season on Sunday.

We've an early morning start, my grandson's team is playing away in Ingomels against the Swifts. If it's a nice day we'll have the afternoon on the beach.

I had been studying the league tables from u10s to u 16s and got the impression that clubs like SWYO, Junior Blades, Greenhill and Handsworth plus two or three more clubs are usually strong from u10s to u14s but their performances seem to drop after that. The four clubs I have mention attract a lot of good players from all over Sheffield but at 13 or 14 some of the players go to academies/centre of excellences and some want to play with their schoolmates and return to the local club they used to play for so the four clubs start to have weaker squads at u15s and are in danger of not having the u16s in the following year. Just like last season Greenhill have decided not to have an u16s team for the coming season.

Not saying that this is the case every season , just my observation. I get the impression the strong teams in the u15s and u16s are usually teams that had the same local players for many years
