NO he wont - for the first time for a few years we are actually in touch with the automatic places -just 3 points from top so why would he? In past years we have only realistically had a play off place to go for as we were so far behind top 2 at this stage.

Last year we were 9 points off the pace and 4 points off the play offs .

Year before we were 8 points off top 2 with a game extra played although in a play off place.

The year before that 2013/14 we were a massive 23 points away from top 2 !!!

So this year is a real opportunity to strengthen and push on to get the top 2 place

A season of consolidation next year and build from there. Just look at the league table. Wigan & Burton finding it tough going. The step up in class is evident to see. Its becoming bigger each year. The Dingles are punching well above their weight though and holding their own at the moment.

My concern is would be that McCabe believes - indeed he has said - that there is nothing he can do in such a scenario.

Things are going well at the moment, but as always with United, wait and see what they do.

I'm sure people don't need to hear this from me again, but you are comparing apples with oranges. If you are offered 80 million for a player, you take it. That player might be worth nothing next week. Plus you have many other good players if you are Spurs or Juve.

If you are offered 1 million for a player, on the other hand, and you don't have many other good players, and that player going will leave a hole, there are more good reasons to say no.

And I hate to bring this up, but Leeds and Huddersfield did not sell Beckford and Rhodes and they got promoted on the back of the goals those players scored, and they were in exactly the same position as we will find ourselves in January. How did they pull off this miracle? By growing a backbone and holding someone to a contract for 4 months. That's all. It's easy to do.

I cant see anyone leaving apart from ELL if he gets recalled. The only player that we may get offers for IMO is Fleck.

Duffy and Sharp are quite old and I doubt would get much interest from above. Coutts may get interest but at the moment he is available for free in the summer.

I just hope that if offers do come in the players will be happy to at least see out the season.

If we can bring in a good pacey goal scoring ST and at a push a LWB then they are the only area's I would strengthen providing there are no departures.

The numbers are all relative.

PL players can move for £50m +
Championship players circa £10m
L1 players < £2m.

What you don't seem to be grasping is the fundamental triangle of a transfer.

Buying club agree terms
Player agree terms
Selling club agree terms.

If parts one and two of this are in place, with a strong desire onthe players part to move, part 3 hardly matters anymore. Best selling club can hope to achieve is a "fair" price.

Or would you prefer a Tevez situation where has was, effectively, on strike ?

A harmonious squad can not afford to have even one of its players throwing a strop and sulking about a move that wasn't allowed. It's disruptive and will ultimately end in the exact opposite to what was intended. Specifically weakening the squad as a whole when the intention (at least) was to keep the player for the qualities he has previously given.

It's not folding. It's not defeatist.

Player contracts are not worth the paper they are written on. We have a Mr Bosman to thank for that !!

Dig your heels in if you wish. Ultimately employing this strategy almost always ends in tears.

Burton dont have the resources to compete at the top but arent doing too bad
theres only 5 points between 13th and 3rd from bottom so theres lots of dross in the championship
Wigan dont get the backing they used to and will return in time to being a rugby town

Games aren't just arbitrary, played by squads of differing quality. The squad as a whole - and the shared experience of a campaign- is a huge part of a success. Spending lots of money on players to actually change the team seems daft to me. I'd much rather see us tie up some contracts, make EEL permanent/extend his loan and maybe get some cover at right wing-back.

Same goes for Ched Evans. Nobody can deny that he would come with a huge amount of fanfare and that all eyes will be on him. Why would you want to do that to a team that have started to gel so well?

It's a total and complete myth that players become unhappy and don't perform when a move is rejected

Why would any player do that ?

Because it gets them a move, like Sterling did. It's not a complete myth, it's fact. Many players are advised by their agents to kick off while the agent themselves are agitating in the background. All managers know about this and it rarely puts them off signing a player.

I take it you're aware of the Berahino situation? Or watched Michael Brown perform after we rejected Spurs' bid?

Sorry mate that's bollocks. If you're in those positions at the start of Jan, autos are most definitely on.

I'll give you the Weir season, though we were pushing play offs in that season too, in the end.

You didn't dream it mate ..... but there's a big difference between Tufty having targets and being allowed to sign them.

We all know that the best time to strengthen the squad is when it's strong and doing well, because the right players ( quality not quantity ) will fit in and improve the squad therefore improving our promotion chances.

However, our Board is notorious for knowing little about football and a cynical old bas**rd like me thinks to myself ..... "I shall believe it when I actually see it " ...... because we've been at this crossroads so often in the last 50 years !!

We spent very little in the summer, slashed the wages of the squad ( which was a good thing ), cut out a load of dross from the squad and now is the time to start building future foundations with quality, if we are to progress.

I'm cynical but I never lose hope ......
