So what were the reasons?

By your own admission Walker got injured in the 54th minute, but he went over in the 51st minute.

It's not altogether clear whether they swapped deliberately in the first instance. Bennett saves and concedes a corner on our left. Treacey comes across to the near post to defend it. Stewart is presumably in the box marking someone? When the ball get cleared down our left, Treacey chases it and voila, they've switched wings.

Newcastle hit the post, Newcastle score. Walker goes off for treatment. Harper goes to right back. Stewart stays on the left, possibly to provide extra defensive cover down that side?

Who knows for sure but it's not simply a case of "Why did he play a left back on the right wing all match?" as some reports would have you believe.

I agree SB - it isn't clear cut.

But what I am saying is that putting him on the right was a disaster, and 19 minutes in footballing terms is a long time

I thought it was simply a belt-and-braces approach to nullify Gutierez and Jose Enrique.

Regarding the stronger foot argument, wasn't Chris Waddle a right-footed left-winger?

Other way around Shirley? But I take your point.
