Played in a higher division than League One and earnt decent money in his career. Therefore in the world of S2 4SU forum, he is an over paid mercenary who is finished and crap. :)

I accept that but I was merely making the point to those that think we couldn't ascertain such a signing. We could, if we wanted, get this GK and his wages wouldn't be such a stumbling block as people think when he's out of contract.

Exactly, he's only worth what someone is willing to offer him. If he's not willing to accept less money than he was on at Norwich, he might be heading for early retirement!

Fortunately, I think CW thinks in a similar way.

I can't think why we'd want to pay near the top of our wage structure for a fat old back up keeper. If he crawled here over broken glass and showed he wanted us then it's a different story, but some has-been wanting one last pay packet can sod off, for me.

Case by case for me, just because someone is young and played in League 1 or 2 last season doesn't mean they are any good, same with older players from the Premier League or Championship they aren't all old, finished and after one last pay day.

I'm sure we'd all agree with you, of course it has to be on an individual basis.

The fact remains that young players on their way up, are generally hungrier than older players who have had fat PL contract and are very much on the way down. I'm generalising I know, but most of Robson, Clough and Adkins recruits make my point.

Clough signed Freeman, Coutts and Basham, all of whom made major contributions to our promotion. He also signed Adams who was sold for over £1m and that's the problem with generalisations.

A couple of older heads in the right positions who have played at a higher level combined with the younger, hungrier players is what we need right now. Admittedly the problem is finding the ones with the right mentality and that's where we trust Wilder to know the market.

It's all about getting the blend right between the older and younger players, Wilder did this pretty well last season so I'm hoping he carries on that way and I certainly can't see why not.

The thread was about older players on the way down so Freeman and Basham can be excluded.

He also signed
JCR
Ben Davies
Butler
Wallace
Alcock
Higdon
McEverley
and on loan; Paddy McCarthy, Billy Paynter and Steve Davies.

I'd say the above bunch do a pretty good job of making my general point against signing older players on the way down.

Ruddy is 30 which is not old for a keeper. He speaks of playing for another 10 years.

David Weir signed young and hungry players. Unfortunately, they seemed to be hungry for booze and drugs rather than a career.

Three of them came from clubs below us, Wallace Alcock and Butler, and Ben Davies was a decent squad player. JCR had his fans too, although I wasn't one of them.

He may have been pish for us but Alcock was exactly the type of player we should have been signing and 26 years old and a rivals player of the year harsh to criticise him for Alcock but the remainder of your points stands on firm ground. Some reyt dross there

We wouldn't have signed Billy if we'd followed a no old and on the way down policy.

What about K.Wallace, Scougall, Cuvelier, McNulty, Hussey and Brandy? All mid 20s or younger and signing for us was a step up and at the very best average (Scougall) but the rest were crap or very crap.

James Wallace was 22 and signed from Tranmere! How was he old and on the way down?

There is no specific type that you can base a transfer policy on, yes up and coming young players with a re-sale value are preferable to older players that have no re-sale value, but you have to also consider the present and how we are going to finish as high as possible next season and if older players will help that, then sign them.

So he turns down a wage decrease at Norwich and will come to play for United on a decrease on top of the decrease that Norwich offered him

Should be willing to play for free under Wilder really.

I believe that Norwich turned down a years option on his contract due to his wage.
In a weeks time his wage is £0 p.a.
We might be able to up that slightly.

Looks like benedict cumberbach playing an east end landlord in a Guy Richie film

It's a yes from me

Looks like he's on his way to Wolves.
Perhaps insuring themselves after the awful news about Ikeme.

I think our budget is a little tight to carry Ruddy (who I would expect wants a decent championship wage) and Moore.

David Weir didn't sign anyone. All of the players that were brought in during his tenure were signed by someone else (can't remember the name, was Mal Brannigan here at the time?)

That's what one of our ex-players told me anyway.

Currently 2nd choice at Wolves- Was number 1 in their championship winning team. Just played well in the 2 cup games v Man U. We need a replacement for Henderson in the summer. Thoughts?

I used to live near him when he played at Norwich, nice bloke and a big fucker as well. Not sure he's as good as he was anymore though.
