It's open season as far as targets go.
I thought Mikel was one of classiest players I've seen all season and didn't realise JUST how good he was until I saw him in the flesh. And that's in a bad Boro side.

Now I think we need a specialist defensive player in midfield. The open expansive way we play will not be evident throughout the whole season, some tweaks will happen for some games (ala the trips to Anfield and the Etihad) - who better to bring in for those games? Jose fkin Mourinho used to trust him for the PL Champions for those games - nevermind us.

Experience at the VERY top level. World Cup and Champions League.
Clearly doesn't think he's too good for us considering he's just spent half a year at Middlesbrough. Surely wages aren't ridiculous based on that fact alone.

Ripe old age of 32 but that shouldn't put us off, if he was 26/27 he'd still be at Chelsea.

Great shout - like you say, when he played at the Lane for Boro he was a class above.

His contract is up at the end of the season too so he'll be free.
If he wasn't ready for his pension I'd have suggested Gareth Barry.

Not really sure what he'd do for us to be honest. We're not really a team that plays to his style, even Norwood slows us down a bit too much at times. Reminds me of a signing Fulham would have made at the start of this season.

Well as I said be a defensive minded player in midfield. Slowing us down is no problem, the pace of the Premier League is a bit slower, less frantic, but much higher quality. Something that Mikel has in abundance.

I think this is a really good shout, assuming Boro don't go up. Can't see him being on a salary that's out of reach for us next season.

Was thinking about him earlier, also Jonny Howson is somebody I think Wilder would be interested in, good box to box midfielder with some premier league experience too. If we decide to go with a solid 3 across the middle at any point, him with Norwood & Fleck would be a nice trio.

Is he actually playing for them at the moment? Thought Pulis had given up on him.

Personally not a wilder type for me, he has nothing to prove

Wouldn’t want him here personally but have to say, I was impressed by him when we beat them 1-0 at home. You could tell he’s played at the elite level.

The boro game at home I thought the same, he was brilliant. Although Duffs sent him back to London with a body feint.

I can see where people are coming from but we need some premier league experience. Be naive to think otherwise.

He might not have anything to prove in some books but I reckon he'll fancy another shot at the Prem if someone gives him the opportunity.

This is what Pulis (I know) had to say about him in March:

Since joining Boro, Mikel has shown he still has plenty to offer at the top level, shining for Pulis's side. The boss was desperate to sign the ex-Chelsea man when he learnt of his availability in January and and says Mikel has been "exceptional" so far.

"He’s been fantastic and a great example to the rest of the group," said the manager of the midfielder.

"He’s a quiet unassuming chap and a top, top player and professional. He’s been really good on and off the pitch.

"He’ll give a lot of credit to the other players as well, I know that because I’ve spoken to him about it.

"You don’t win that many trophies and medals without being a good player.

"It’s not just on the pitch where we need him, it’s on the training ground as well, when you’ve got young lads who are training and working with a top, top international player who’s won everything, it certainly inspires them.

"Hopefully fingers crossed John will be here (next season) and we’ll get the job done and win promotion."

He is just a rich man's Semi Ajayi so just go get Semi from Rotherham for next to nothing. He would provide good defensive midfield cover, he is a bomb scare in the back 4, but does weigh in with goals, and is a beast running forward, full international and a really good age

Pork Talk:

Mikel is also been courted by Sheffield Wednesday who finished 12th this season in the Championship according to a report on Northern Echo.

The 31-year-old made 18 appearances for Middlesbrough scoring just once.

On the international scene, it is yet to be seen if Mikel would represent Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Leroy fer over him for me if we’re after a dominant midfield player.

Let’s not be daft.

I'd say the other way around. I think we're more likely to be after him than Wednesday. He had a cracking game against us earlier in the season and it won't have gone unnoticed by Wilder (even though he's supposedly not after players after a last payday).
It'd be an extremely astute signing - bags of experience, we'll need a specialist defensive midfielder more often, and on a free. Whats not to like?

Fer seems like the best free agent going and possibly the best option for this midfield role full stop.

Mo Diame another one.
