John Lundstram Appreciation Thread...............

It's funny how a player comes along for SUFC every so often and is hardly given a chance by the fans, it could be for many reasons, history, (previous clubs) perceived lack of effort/ability, the player he was replacing and so on.....but it happens.

Ironically, the last person that was written off as a waste of time and then turned good was Coutts, the player that Lunny "replaced" when he broke his leg...….immediately Lunny was written off as not fit to lace Couttsys boots and yes he did struggle at times but for me there was always something there and you could see the lad had ability.

Fast forward 2 years and Lunny has come of age, he completely bossed the midfield on Sunday and was everywhere, a "total" performance, tackles won, attacks, shots, pinged balls, he was superb and rightly so man on the match for me.

I remember the start of season 16-17, Couttsy was on the transfer list but Wilder was forced to play him due to injuries, myself and Pinchy said then among the whinging and moaning that he would be a big player for us that year, and he was. Then not 3/4 weeks ago we both said the same about Lunny and that he would figure prominently for us this season.

Well done John Lundstram, I'm so pleased you are proving the doubters wrong......long may it continue.

Thought he did OK but wouldn't quite describe it like that. I thought Freeman's performance was more telling for future reference than Lundstram's actually.

Although I'm not saying he's as good, there's a Jordon Henderson/James Miller type player in there.

I think the main thing is it's another example of Wilders sixth sense. To stick with him for so long, when he looked out of his depth on occasion, says loads about CW ability so see something in a player and bring it out.

He wasn’t only hardly given a chance by the fans, he was barely given a chance by the manager, what were some of his doubters to think when the man who brought him here barely played him in the league below?

Lunny is a good player who is already playing a great role in the team this season, it’s early days but he’s looking good at the moment.

Pretty sure it's a confidence thing with him. He had a good run in pre-season and he's earned his place now.

I’ve always said there’s a player in there..always thought he played in a similar style to Steven Gerard but obviously not as good.
The factors I noticed that although he’s not great at anything....he has the most allround game amongst all our midfielders.
Let’s say there are 10 facets of being a midfielder, the Lunny is 6 out of 10 at everything.
So there’s nothing that he needs major work on...he just needs to slightly improve all aspects of his game.

I also noticed that he was club captain at Oxford and their best player when he was about 21.
It shows he must have an impressive attitude, personality and leadership to be a captain anywhere at the young age of 21.

Another factor was he looked really hungry like a lean machine in the training videos as though he realises that this season is make or break regards his whole career.
To date he’s played like a man possessed, like his life depends on it.

He needs to keep it up but so far I’m impressed.....especially as he’s earned a reputation as scapegoat, so it’s harder to win some fans around.
However it’s far too early to say he’ll become a regular.....we have massive strength in depth with other players desperate to replace him.

During the close season I cast my mind back quite a lot over the previous blades teams I'd seen get promoted and it's quite often the case that certain players surprise you in how the pace and style of the league suits their game and others who you think will do well just never really make it

Chris wilder is a good example he found a way of playing and focused on his strengths and negated his weaknesses ,David Barnes was another example as was Keith Gillespie and Chris lucketti

Players who just work hard on their game and take their chance when it comes

I was wondering who this season's surprise package would be and never even considered lunny
He might not be able to sustain his form for long spells or he might just be so good at doing what he is doing now he increases in value twenty times
There may well be one or two others who might come from no where and take their chance
when it comes
One thing Is for sure and that is that wilder saw something right from the start of pre season and we're seeing it now also

Lets not go overboard. He played well, very well in fact, but it's early doors. Don't build him up for a fall.

The same goes for those that still aren't fans. Because I guarantee if he has a poor game within the next couple of months there'll be plenty ready to jump on him & claim they were right all along & he's never been good enough.

I was delighted for him to get his goal, in truth he probably needed to do something like that to win a few of his doubters over. Hopefully he'll be given more support going forward
