Willie Carlin played in a different era, when football ability wasn't secondary to being a six foot something athlete. Other players, such as Jimmy Greaves, also wouldn't have made it in today's game.

Louis Reed is a very good footballer who admittedly is hampered by a lack of inches. His ability may or may not make up for that, but I personally think he will have a decent professional career.

Why do you hate anything that comes out of our academy?

I don't Nick but I see players for what they are. I don't add a premium to their ability because they are from the Academy. I'm afraid the proof of the pudding is in the eating. I could name the names but we all know who they are. I want very good players in my team. I couldn't care less where they come from. However if they are manifestly not good enough I don't care if they are called Luton Shelton or Louis Reed. Any professional career Reed has will be at Conference level, I fear.

By the way we were talking about Willie Carlin. You raised Louis Reed, not me!....

My brother and I used to listen to games on the radio as dad hated football and despite never seeing him deliver one, we always used to get excited when he took a corner. We used to say " yes, a John Gannon specialist corner!"

Can anyone confirm if there was anything special about them?
We've spent about 10 seasons hitting the man on the near post. With Gannon we must have scored a high % of corners we took.

He were knobbing one of the lasses who worked at Yankees.. She were game and that blue t shirt suited her baps no end. Many a time after a match we used to have other dining options but j......s baps brought us down Ecclesall Road...

Inappropriate yes, true yes and fantastic baps certainly...

It was Silverdale same year as Wilder and fit( but also thick as fuck!)

Coutts isn't slow at all. Leaves players in his wake when he drives forward. Gannon never did.

Why can't he do it when he's going back towards our goal then? Gee it a rest Pinchy.. Anyone whose seen him and played the game knows that given time and space he's a class act when he can be arsed, but Mr Sprinter and Mr Rapid Track Back he aint. If he was capable of "driving forward" he would have scored more than he has in his career. He's ok. He's a footballer, but he's not the world beater you seem to champion. Just let him get on with what's needed this season. Maybe if we go up then next season will give him more opportunity to use the vision he clearly has.

You haven't noticed his turn of pace over 10/20 yards? I'm not suggesting he's Luton Shelton... thank fuck.

Running with the ball is a different matter to running without it.

I think you are mistaking "guile" and a "footballing brain" for the pace of which you speak. He hasn't got blistering pace or even "quick off the mark pace". What he has got is the ability to receive a ball and then by being a claver footballer to use his body, feet, feints, bluff, to make time and space to move away. I bet if you put him up against his marker in a straight line race he would lose over 10 yards. Put him in the same situation in a game receiving a pass, I'd back him 7/10 this season.

Love to know what you edited there :)

He used to have a footy coaching thing up at Graves Park weekly and in the summer they had big tournaments and stuff. I used to go when I was about 8 or 9 years old. For the finals of the tournaments he used to have ex United players handing out the medals. Brian Deane came once (he was a right moody cunt) and Alan Kelly the other. Kelly had a kick around with us I remember him letting us take pens against him.

A young Flumps was considered a promising prospect after I rifled in a beauty, could see Gannon was impressed but I thought the world of technical estimating needed me more than football...

Deano was probably tired from crossing the ball into the box for himself, being sub goalie, being the groundsman, head chef, programme seller and anything else Reg Brearley and the Board wanted him to do.

I always got the impression from interviews that Deano was a bit of an introvert. With Billy Sharp's swagger he could have been even better than he was.

I think Gannon is arguably the most underrated player we've ever had for United because he was a decent player and created countless goals for us but never seemed to get much credit. His left foot was sublime. It was Gannon who set up Bobby Davison for example v the Wendies in the 3 - 1 away win for example.

Bearing in mind a lot of the football under Harry was biapasing the midfield to hit the strikers or wingers I think Gannon did really well for us. Cost us nowt too.

Brilliant at corners and free kicks. Used to be family friends his wife's Grandma and my Grandad were "courting" and we used to go round to her Grandma's and Justine would sometimes be there. Gannon and Tracey (who were good mates) came round to my Mum's once at Xmas and Tracey gave me a signed pair of gloves no idea where the gloves are now. Also went to their wedding at Sheffield Moat House, my brother filmed it on an old VHS camera and when we watched it back my Grandad was there always with a Whiskey in his hand talking to players telling them what they should be doing in a match. He loved it bless him. My Grandad and Glyn Hodges got absolutely drunk they were hilarious. Also Def Leppard gate crashed the wedding just because they were staying there same time and found out the wedding was on and Dave Bassett showed up for a bit. Wish I knew where that video was must be in my Dad's loft somewhere.
