I just bought a poster of the 1990-1991 squad, and it has some bloke called John Flower on it. Who the fuck was he?

I can vaguely remember him think he was a low key signing who never played i used to get him mixed up with julian winter who got injured and never played

Never heard of him and I was living in Sheffield and working with loads of other Blades at the time. No recollection of seeing him play or even being on the bench.

No idea but I bloody love that poster. I've asked Frenchy on Twitter, he might know more about him.
 
Defender Johannes “Jon” Flower was signed by Roger Ashby for the newly formed Rushden & Diamonds in the summer of 1992. He had played for local clubs Brixworth, British Timken and Corby Town, before a short period in the late 1980’s with Sheffield United. He never played a first team game for the Blades, but during his stay, went on loan to Aldershot at the beginning of 1990, before signing for the Hampshire club in the summer.

Defender Johannes “Jon” Flower was signed by Roger Ashby for the newly formed Rushden & Diamonds in the summer of 1992. He had played for local clubs Brixworth, British Timken and Corby Town, before a short period in the late 1980’s with Sheffield United. He never played a first team game for the Blades, but during his stay, went on loan to Aldershot at the beginning of 1990, before signing for the Hampshire club in the summer. While with the Shots, the club went out of business before the end of the season, and he signed for Aylesbury Town for the following season. Roger Ashby brought the central defender to Nene Park in the July 1992, and Jon captained the side in their first ever League game in August 1992.

John Flower
By trade, Jon was an HGV tanker driver, and he went on to make 137 appearances for the club during three seasons before his contract was terminate in September 1995. He went on to play for Raunds Town before retiring from the game.

He was good in the reserves matches but had a bad injury which ruled him out from playing football for a long time. When he returned to playing in reserves matches he wasnt the same as he was and shortly after that he went to Aldershot. I remember watching tv highlights of a FA Cup match at west Ham and Flower got sent off (cant remember the offence)

Found the sending off. Offence was 5.05

Didn't pull many trees up really ,bit of a pansy with that bush on his top lip. Gladiola we arranged his transfer ,I thought Forest or Welwyn Garden city would have suited him.
 
I have no Flower puns but I saw him play for the reserves at the end of one of the back to back promotion seasons so I can confirm he did exist and was in our books.

I think I was a ball boy for that reserve match, or for one he played in around that time. I remember seeing his name on the teamsheet and wondering who he was.
 
Is Fowler Road Hainault named after him?
I have to go there in the morning.

Were you the ball boy that congratulated Deano when he scored the winner against Port Vale in April 1990?
 
I remember watching John Flowers. Regular centre half for the reserves for quite a while, never got near the first team....

No he was not. Junior Blades Under 10s were only used as reserve team ball boys.

Of all the things I know about United's history, that may be the least interesting.

A mate of my dads had a kid who was a ball boy in the late 70s. When Fulham played and brought George Best, this kid picked up the ball when it went out of play. Best trotted over to get it and this kid started squeezing it and bouncing it to check for pressure (United might have been a goal up). Best got shirty with him and the Unitedites gave it "Ooooooo, get you Georgie"

I remember something like this happening. I think it was Liverpool and we were winning 1-0. I think their player had either fouled or was offside but was through on goal.and shot and beat the keeper.. In my memory the ball boy ran on and dived and turned the ball round the post. Crowd all cheered but it could have been a problem if the ref hadn't given the foul - probably have cost us a 20 point deduction when the F.A. considered our case.

The reason I asked was that a ball boy called Paul (who congratulated Deano in that Port Vale game) travelled to some away matches with me and my dad (my dad knew Paul's parents through work) for the 1989-90 season. He brought a friend with him to get in my dad's car for the Leicester game and I think that was the last I saw of him
