John Fleck and my all time United XI dilemma

A year ago there was no doub that Fleck was in my all-time United XI (from 1980). Now I can't make up my mind, do I go on the first four years, or does his poor form for the past year mean he is out? Stuart McCall could get a recall into the team yet.

I don't think you can/should judge any of our players based on last year. I'm sure we'll see Fleck, Stevens and Norwood come good again as the season goes on and confidence returns

I hope so, although I think Wayne Quinn just keeps Enda out of my all-time XI.

If I think about my all time 11 based on players in my life time. There’s only ever one other central midfield place up for grabs after seeing Gary Speed. For that season and a bit he played for us he was absolutely unplayable, even at that age.

They may come good again but I don't think Fleck would ever make my all time XI regardless

lot of the lads (enda, fleck, Norwood etc) are approaching the end of a very generous length of rope with their performances and the amount of slack they have had. even the likes of Egan and mcgoldrick are starting to take strays in discussions.

In a perverse way (as he never got to play in the perm for us) Duffy is one of the few key contributors from the glory years who’s reputation is undimmed by the past 18 months of abject misery.

He possibly got out at the right time for his legacy with us.

For me, Quinn had a good half season 97/98 then faded. His other spell was largely forgettable.

Stevens was solid for a good couple of seasons. I’d actually have Stevens up there with Armstrong as the best left backs of my time watching.

I don’t know. Fleck and Stevens were lower league journeymen until Wilder got hold of them. Take Wilder away and maybe you’ve got lower league journeymen again.

As terrible as Wilder was when he had a few quid to spend, there were some players he seemed to have performed magic with.

He did nowt wrong ans subsequent events have almost exonerated him anyway.

Michael Brown and Paul Coutts. I was a big fan of Gordon Cowan.but he didn't play for long enough.

Roger Nilsen is my best XI left back (I go back to my first game in 1983 where Joe Bolton scores as it happens). If I needed to switch to 3-5-2 (perhaps an easy home game against a random Northampton fan's Best Cobblers XI) then I'd bring in Armstrong instead.

Off the top of my head a few of my favourite players (for various reasons) who are worth a shout for a best United XI…

Brian Deane, Tony Agana, Alan Kelly, Don Hutchinson, Peter Ndluv, Simon Tracey, Dean Henderson, Vas Bobokis, Ched Evans, Chris Morgan, Billy Sharpe, Micheal Brown, Phil Jagielka, Kyle Walker, Dane Whitehouse, Harry Magiure, Glynn Hodges, Jan Fjortoft and Micheal Tonge.

All off the top of my head, if I sat and thought about it I could probably list another dozen or so.

Very happy memories watching some of these over the years.

I'm sure Fleck has contributed more good games than McCall did so if you were to replace him I'm not sure he'd be the one.
