Finally the CH question gets asked - and not really answered! (Response is basically: "My policy is not to comment on transfers." Which is fair enough: the journalists should be asking the right question to the right person, they got it half right so far.)

All in all though: "Let's focus on the play-offs." I agree. A great man to have at the club.

Even if this was true - and we've no idea of knowing whether it is - this is one type of old school centre half. There are some of these about, but the game has moved on.

And fwiw apparently Stan was a quiet family man off the pitch. One of many examples of the player on the pitch being completely different from the person off it.

Also are any of these centre halves more straight talking than Clough's dad?

Commanding , imposing ,intelligent players we need , not only at CH . If we had 3 of them this season we would have pissed this league , and we all know it.

Just heard it. I agree, but I think Clough needs to learn and I sense from the variety of comments over the season from the many posters on here that perhaps there are issues with Clough's approach to certain characters. Given Brian didn't suffer fools gladly I wonder if this trait has been passed on and sadly there is no Peter Taylor to balance it in the management team.

As much as I like Jim I was cringing a little with that interview. I Really don't like the money men talking too much on the actual playing side. Other than that thought he stuttered through it a bit, got less than halfway through before I'd had enough.

I think Jim sometimes tries too hard to be a man of the people and he talks a little too much on some subjects that should really remain internal.

I personally think he's a genuine and honest man which really helps.

I thought it was cringe worthy, for once Jim came across very poorly stuttering and babbling nonsense in an effort to talk a lot and say nothing. The club really needs to employ a PR/Media guru.

I think Jim sometimes tries too hard to be a man of the people and he talks a little too much on some subjects that should really remain internal.

Agree Swiss . Just thinking this morning , i personally believed Clough was the right man for the job. The only thing against him , was he , or any of his staff he brought with him , didn't really know league 1 , after spending time at Derby in the championship. He is a good championship manager to provide stability to a club , which requires stability before moving it forward . I know some will mention Burton , but that was a long time ago and football evolves , changes , although the basics are 22 players kicking a ball.

He has gone for quantity over quality , and perhaps not had anyone to bounce advice off , for what is needed to get out of league 1. In saying that we are still short of key players in key positions , and perhaps Phipps ( who is not a football man out and out ) , realises the fundamental mistakes Clough has definitely made .

Phipps i think will have a massive say on whether Clough stays or goes , as the club see him as the catalyst link between club and fans . Also the bloke is no fool , and will also i believe pass comment , on the financial side , if we don't make the play offs. If SUFC were in the championship , we could live with it takes time to build , but we are not there yet .

Are we any way forward from Weir , maybe so , but being near , doesn't count in football or life.

Clough will be a lucky bloke , if he keeps his job IMO , even taking into account stability , sacking managers on a regular basis.

Cotterell , Steve Evans , may all be looked upon as wankers , but they know league 1 and how to get out of it. Is this someone we actually need.

I thought that was an important part of the interview, and from it I take we'll be sticking with Clough.

If that's the way it goes then I agree with it with some caveats eg signing a centre half or two, and being very well placed at Christmas.

If Preston, Bristol City, and MK Dons are up, I don't know enough about the relgated teams - apart from Blackpool the basket case, but we should do very well.

I see a future of 1-0 leads and picking off teams on the break, rather than a neverending series of 2-1 home defeats.

I think the game could learn a few things from American Football. Free kicks the world over are amateurish and unimaginative, nobody seems to know who's taking them, or what they're going to do.

I think some pretty basic ideas could be imported (eg timing patterns) and be have some effect. Might be too much of a culture shock. I did expect to see some well constructed free kicks as the game took off in the States but it hasn't happened.

Maybe energetically blasting the ball into the wall or the crowd really is the optimal approach. Who knows?

I assume the above BBC article is what Jim is referring to. So the top 10 clubs who have changed managers the most since 09-10 (when the article was written in October) were:

Notts County - 9
Palace - 7
Watford - 7
Forest - 7
Pompey - 7
Bristol City - 6
Hartlepool - 6
Blades - 6
Scunny - 6
Leeds - 5

I'm not seeing from that list that changing managers regularly equals failure, it's pretty mixed so proves nothing really.

The key to success is employing the right manager, not just sticking with one because stability might prove to be successful.

Exactly. I'm about as far from an expert as it's possible to get but just listening to the commentary it's clear that the routes for Wide Receivers are pretty well thought out, whereas footballers play more on instinct.

I envisage a brave new world in which instead of a midfielder playing it short, a "winger" running long, and the ball drifting harmlessly out of play, they communicate with each other! Radical.

F'rinstance: the "winger" can take the defender downfield knowing he's going to run a Curl pattern and the midfielder can pass short instead of blasting it hopefully/hopelessly into the channels. Imagine that: no more misplaced passes.

No idea if this is practicable, but it does seem plausible.

I guess if there was any mileage in it, the US soccer coaches would have incorporated it into their game.

Remember Phipps is the Prince's man and the Prince was originally co-Chair before Phipps, took over the position. Jim has no personal financial investment in the club as far as I know..

Any decision, if needed, will be taken by McCabe and the Prince. Of course Baki and Phipps will have input, as will the members of the board, but ultimately it's down to the club's owners. As it's primarily the Prince who has been funding the club over the past season, and he who will be expected to put more funds in next season, I expect it will be ultimately down to him.

Of course, this discussion is all academic at the moment as we still have a decent shot of promotion.

You talk about Evans and cotterill as if they're experts at promotion from league 1, they've both done it once , I accept that Nigel has never done it but you can look at some average and even poor managers that have promotions under their belts

Although i looked at it at the time , i thought Clough was the right manager for SUFC.

Just a thought , but do you require a manager with league 1 experience , who has had previous promotions on his CV to get you out of this league , or are we just asking too much , and our expectations too high.

The debate will move on one way or another , depending which way the result goes tonight.

Cotterell and Evans type , may not be the experts in promotion as you say , but are they the type on manager that we require to get out of this league . Who knows , maybe Clough will do it . ( They have been experts in the last couple of seasons , so are they the correct calibre , with having a winning momentum , to take another club forward ) . Its a bit of a lottery , and its only the board members who have to buy a ticket.

If Clough does go , who do we get , no idea . Could it be its better the devil you know than don't know , and we stick with Clough.

Cotterell, Evans, Grayson etc all had no L1 promotions at one point.

Managers can be good one season, and crap the next. Even Mourinho doesn't win the league every season. Clough is still relatively young and has a solid record of building strong teams, with no relegations on his CV. There's no reason why he shouldn't still be a very successful manager in the future.
