"NO IPSWICH DEAL FOR THOMAS

Former Premier League winger Jerome Thomas has left Ipswich after failing to earn a contract.

The free agent had trained with the Championship club over the last week."

Not that we are going to sign anyone, but would be worth a shout always thought he was a half decent winger would do a job in league one...

Better than Woolford, plus we can sign him on a deal till the end of the season to avoid 'building to a big squad of 40 professionals'

He's probably got enough pace left to be good in League One. I'd take him on a sort term contract.

If we're pretending there are no potential loanees out there who could improve us we might as well start looking at free agents, Moussa and Vaz Te being another two.

The question is has he got the desire, the hungry and determination our squad apparently shows? Will he help us win a game of football? Will he help to stick it in one end and keep it out the other ?.

No no no. We need to move away from ex PL players dropping down the leagues for big pay cheques and long contracts.

I can remember a few saying the same about Adam Hammill and he's been one of Barnsley's best players. Better to stick with Flynn, JCR and Woolford eh?

Good signing if we can get him just until summer

A player that would have been a good signing 5 years ago.

We really should have told Deane to fuck off.

It is 28 years since we first signed Deano. Unfortunately in more recent history, our "young, hungry" signings either turn out like Darryl Westlake, Lyle Taylor, Andy Taylor, and so on, or they are sold like Bent was, or Blackman, or Murphy. Even the ones that looked good to begin with and are still with us like Scougall and Adams have lost their way.

Youth isn't enough of a basis on which to sign someone, and "hungry" is just a cliché. Any player can have desire if you motivate them correctly.

We need a motivated, well-organised, talented team, irrespective of age, to get us out of this division.

Maybe a thread about Jerome Thomas isn't the place for this debate, because he isn't the answer either, having only played 10 games in the last three years, but I just think people expect us to gamble (and that's what it is) on these much-vaunted "young, hungry" players and them turn out to be a bunch of lower league superstars. Unfortunately they are more likely to end up being Thirlwells, O'Tooles and Kristian Rogerses, or be sold at the first sign of improvement. The problem with the both the younger and older players we have signed recently hasn't been a lack of hunger, but a lack of talent or physical fitness and robustness.

Can't write youth off because they are youth, that's the point.

Also can't write off the old 'un getting his last pay check - McGrath, Cowens.

As you say we need a motivated, well-organised, talented team, irrespective of age.

Oh, no, of course don't write them off. If we have scouted a good, young player, than by all means, go for it. Scougs, Murphy and Adams either are or could be good signings. I was just trying to illustrate the point that people on here keep suggesting to sign "young, hungry" players like it's almost a certainty that we'll end up with another Deano on our hands.

It's just as likely, if not moreso, that we'll end up with a duffer because there is little evidence of how they will play in a competitive match. Look at McGahey and Wallace. They were supposed to be young and hungry, but neither can get into our defence, even when we have injuries.

I just want us to look at ability first and build from there. It's far easier to turn around a talented team whose heads have dropped, than one with limited ability but hearts of gold.

Why the fuck would we need a black Martyn Woolford as well as a white one? One's bad enough.

Question is, the way this club is going, who on earth would want to come and join this sinking ship? Are there really people out there who still think we have a chance of doing anything other than making up part of the gap between top 6 and bottom 4?

We've discussed the benefits of so many players being out of contract in Summer so we can rebuild a team. I see some downsides to that. The two obvious ones are, first of all Woolford and Sammon (and Hammond for those who don't like him) are all Adkins acquisitions. Who wants another 8 like them? Second, the time it will take to get a team playing together properly, but the thing that's worrying me now is this collection of fat slow half-arsed footballers KNOWS their contracts are up in Summer so WTF are they bothering for? Short answer is they're NOT and that might be part of the reason we're so bloody poor right now.

When you say sinking ship weve that many holes to fill.more like sinking sponge

Should only sign them until, end of season, we need to keep options open even if we have to overpay them for a short commitment with a longer term contract on "reasonable terms" in the offering in the summer

I'd be inclined to give signings like this a miss.

As daft as it sounds, these (released players) are the types that would come in, player well for a month or 2, earn a contract and then go back to the performances that got them released in the first place.

None of the players on the free agents list stand out as long term investments.

Thats what we need!! players playing to win a contract if they do the business maybe we would then sign them, but initially if we get 3 months of excellence from them we have got what we needed and contracts would follow if deserved. It's always a gamble signing players but if the quality is there it could pay off big time ,hope Mr Adkins can bring in the right ones who can hit the ground running.
