I've seen quite a bit of him at Chesterfield over the past few years. I don't think any of us have seen a lot of him for the Blades. I rate him personally. He's found starts hard to come by here but he's a good player and has weighed in with a few goals too. I'd definitely sign him.

Goal scoring midfielder, released so on a free, I would say deffo worth a squad place.

For me its a no, despite an eye for a goal, he doesn't do enough in open play over 90mins. We need to sign better players than what we already have .

Is it really forward thinking to sign 2 players from pretty much the worst team in L1 last season.

I would think we could do a lot better .....

We have a starting 10 (Sharp plus another at top) that the rest of the squad are not good enough to get into the team. Add to that the question marks over Carruthers being here if true.

We have to bring in players who are better than the 10. That's how you push on those 10 players to play even better to keep their place and get even better.

Wilder said in his interview last week there was no room for sentiment so for me there is no new contract or room for the likes of Hussey, O'Shea, McNulty, Scougall, Clarke or Hanson, Done etc;

Then there's the shocks...

Clarke signed a 3 year deal didn't he?

I can't believe we're still trying to outthink Sir Christopher W. regarding the player's potential.
If he is retained it means he's going to do things none of us have seen yet.

So you think that we should look at how well a team is doing rather than the individual then? If so we would have never signed Brian Deane and many others.

How many games have you seen him in open-play over 90 minutes? I don't think there's been one so far has there?

I suspect with O'Shea that the lad isn't quite up to our standards of fitness. Let him have a full summer of training with us and see how he performs next season. Until we've seen him with 10 or 12 games under his belt we just won't know for sure. I must have seen him maybe 20 times or so in the past 2 or 3 years and each time he's impressed me - albeit at a lower level than the Championship.

We are not looking for squad players, we are looking for better players.

Question is, are we gonna find any players capable of replacing Fleck and Coutts?

I believe the answer is no, and that is because of the fees that would be required to do so. Plus, it would also be unlikely that either of those players would want to hang about if they were playing second fiddle to someone else when they are both good enough for at least the championship.

So we need to have players ready to step in if either or both get injured or suspended. At the start of the season, those options were limited. By the time it finished we had some genuinely good options.

If we go with three in the middle, OShea looked decent in spells as the number 10. He can also cross a ball and as I mentioned has a knack of scoring.

So he ticks a few boxes in different roles too.

Sign him up....free transfer, reasonable wages that for the wage structure, and another one who has a winning mentality and knows the club to carry into the new season.

Yeah, he's decent. I'm hoping for better than decent tho.

a step at a time
just because teams like man city can afford wholesale changes , spoilt it for everyone
we have to build , step by step
we can survive in my opinion and finish mid table with what we have
some go on like weve got to get in 10 players just to survive , a ludicrous position

we won league one by a mile , because we have decent players, werll good enough to more than just satay up
4 or 5 new players will see us compete at the top

its not a massive gulf , theres some very mediocre sides in the championship

I also think

One good player in any given team can disappear in the standard that a team plays. Two good players should be making a difference to a team.

Neither have had any major input into the Chesterfield side this season either before January in O'Shays case or Evans after.

No for me, need to invest every penny we have for 4 new high quality1st team starting players plus Evans and Brayford.I would look to offload Hanson, not up Championship level, also release Done, McNulty, Reid, Long, Scougall (believe some of these are out of contract anyway)
We need a smaller squad of better class players rather than a big squad of average players

Surely Wilder coming in and changing the mentality of the club from being mediocre to winners is the one thing that we need to keep for next season

players are secondary , as proven by him getting players previously perceived as not good enough to be more than capable

Whatever CW does will be what we need, if he thinks we only need 4 no one can argue otherwise as they cant achieve what he has .

We have 16 or 17 good squad players that will play some part, see at least 6/7 starting next season
as usual 7 or 8 will move on and probably 5/6 new players and 3 loans will see us start anew in August withy 23 -25 players

I think the squad must get bigger, we got away with it this year playing Done at Left wing back and playing Basham at RWB, but in the championship you can come against some excellent wingers such as Knockart (sp) etc. We need to beef up the squad in terms of numbers, as people like Chapman/Riley/EEL will also be going etc

yay or nay
I don't think he'd be a half bad addition to the squad especially on free, as said earlier we'll need cover for the regular 3 , CW already said he intends to give the current squad a pop at championship level .
Many years ago mistake Porterfield made after coming out of 4th division was a 6 new players , didn't gel or work , I'd give them a chance with maybe a couple additions , it'll be interesting to see what Mc Cabe/ Prince are willing to put in the battle chest , my instinct is not a lot ??

yay or nay?

It's a nay from me lad

I think it’d be a nay for me too. Made a decent contribution during his time here but with Duffy and Samir already here and Brooks coming up behind, I just don’t think we need him and the funds could probably be put to better use. He has a good end product but doesn’t look after possession as well as our main starting 3 midfielders and having too many squad players for a position means youngsters like Brooks are unlikely to ever get their chance. That said, can’t see him taking up a lot of the budget and if we do sign him as cover, I wouldn’t be too upset.

10 starts 3 goals never played in a losing team for us
had worse players Id say

Didn’t even start all of those to be fair. Posh, Scunny, Millwall and I think Coventry he came on as a sub.

means everything , why do clubs rely on stats therse days

baseball players in US wages are based on their stats
to play in 10 games and not lose means youve been 10 per cent responsible for it, at least
will he improve the team ,
well theres evidence hes not detracted from it more than some fan deciding he doesnt like him
clubs these days will not reject him on those figures

why have we won the league
weve won more games than anyone else
after that its which players have contibuted playing in unbeaten teams
not a random personal taste session

why would you invest in certain shares
they offer good returns , show some gains ,
investing in players is the same

How does being in a team make you at least 10% responsible? 1 man is just over 9% of the starting 11. Then there’s the contribution of the subs meaning probably less than 9% responsible. I know I’m being a pedant but if you’re going to cite the importance of stats you should be accurate.

yes you are being pedantic . 10 outfield players goalies are a different breed
All are rounded up

Bur O,Shea hasnt done anything wrong and some are having a go
its like its a need for some people to look for anything detremental
wednesdayites find less faults than some blades in here

The OP makes a valid question about O'Shea.

It's a difficult one to answer. Numerous past managers have had a vast quantity of players - players who are all much of a muchness.

As fans, now we are out of the 3rd tier, we have our own opinions about how to get out of the 2nd tier. My answer to this is quality.

Will O'shea add to the quality at Champ level? - probably not. Carruthers appears to have more quality than most others in the squad, so where does that leave O'shea?
