Lee Baxter, bloody hell. I was at that game and was quite young (13/14) and can remember thinking it was the worst thing I had ever seen in my entire life.

I remember thinking it was going to be all over the main news channels when I got back like it was 9/11 or something.

Turns out goalkeepers make mistakes like that quite often. Am I remembering it differently or was it as bad as that?

TIL Ben Doane played twenty three times for us (I even saw him score, but genuinely thought that was his only appearance).

If we're only counting league (as in top 4 tiers) games then Ashley Sestanovich is close I think, according to Wikipedia at least. 2 appearances for United (not sure if any were in the league?) and then loan spells at non-league teams - although I think Grimsby might have been the equivalent of League Two at the time?

I was going to call him a man best known for being Thierry Henry's double in an ad, but the post-script to his career is, uh, well...

"In 2006, Sestanovich was arrested and charged with conspiracy to rob from a roofing firm in South London in June 2005 that resulted in the murder of a man who was shot in the chest during the raid.[5] In April 2007, he was found guilty and sentenced to eight years in prison which subsequently ended his professional football career after Grays terminated his contract."

I was going to nominate Dries Boussata as I remember him being subbed on and then off again. It turns out that he played 6 times for us. He also had 3 caps for Holland

Ryan Mallon and Lewis Killeen both played once for us before moving to Halifax. Not sure if they were still in the league at the time.

I was at that game as well and we actually played really well that first half. Just goalkeeping was a bit confidence sapping. I remember some of the players just shaking their heads after one of the goals.

That last sentence.

Sums that day up. Universal Blades despair and anger.

"Dries Boussatta has 3 caps for the Netherlands" should have been the subtitle for the famous Adidas 'Impossible is Nothing' slogan.

Nope, relegated at the end of the 2001/02 season. Killeen and Mallon joined in November 2002 on loan then permanently in the summer of 2003.

  • Was signed on what was “Total Toss Tuesday”, the historic day in United’s history when we signed 4 awful players at the same time in JJ, Sean McGinty, Febian Brandy, and the Stephen Jagielka of the McGinn Family, Stephen McGinn. 4 players for £0, and still somehow daylight robbery.
  • Eligible to play for England, Jamaica, Singapore, Northern Ireland and Scotland at international level. He featured for England and then N.Ireland at youth level.
  • Played in the same Everton youth team that won the Dallas Cup as Ross Barkley and Eric Dier – Ben Heneghan and John Lundstram were also in the same team.

Nicky Johns goalkeeper, he never even managed a full game subbed at half time for us.

Dornan played 3 or 4 games and went back to Belfast to study law. He played for Linfield as a part timer for some years.

I think Harwood might have played one other game. His debut was in our 3-2 win over Sunderland featured on Match of the Day. He was involved in the move for one of the goals.
Dornan did come back to England to play for Swindon.

Richard Harwood and his wife often posts in one of Blades FB group. Wilder's Army I think

Going back a little further than Revolution 's summary - anyone remember Julian Broddle's only league appearance?

2nd Jan 1982 2-2 v Halifax Town - me and lots of other kids got free tickets to see a farce of a game played on what amounted to a skating rink at Bramall Lane. Volunteers had helped move the snow to the side of the pitch before the game. Not for the first time that season we squandered a 2-0 lead.

Broddle did play in a couple of County Cup games but became more famous for being a bent copper.

Playing Baxter over Alan Fettis cost us a playoff place, in the end.
I don’t really know what he was thinking either, as Fettis was an unspectacular but safe choice for the role on a temporary basis, and a reasonably frequent international for Northern Ireland. Also one of a rare number of keepers that would back in the days of 3 subs find himself occasionally subbed on as a striker too.

I feel honoured that I actually saw the Colchester game he came on for. I am going to get a t shirt printed with the message, 'I've seen Jasper Johns play football'!

I remember a fan throwing a snowball at the ref!

Broddle next played at the Lane for Barnsley in 1988. He’d filled out and was completely unrecognisable from the skinny lad who played against Halifax.

He went to Dinno Comp and was a decent lad. A couple of other lads got trials at league clubs and were all Billy BigBollocks about it, Julian Broddle ('Jubo') was all right.

Haven't seen him since the early 80s, but I'm sure he'd speak highly of me too, .....ish.

Extending my list further back, there are 4 one gamers from 1980 to 1991, two of whom are referred to above:

Nigel Steane v Wimbledon 1979-80 (sub)
Julian Broddle v Halifax 1981-2
Paul Wood v WBA 1987-88 (sub)
Martin Dickinson v Brentford 1988-89 (sub)

that was a different Paul Wood from the one that came in towards the end of 1990.

You have details of this very serious and if untrue libelous accusation?

he was sacked from The police after he failed a drugs test. Widely reported at the time.

Goalkeepers make mistakes, even the best ones. I'd describe Lee Baxter's appearance as being as though we had grabbed someone out of the crowd, who had never even played the position before.

Some other one league starts, although they had at least one other sub appearance...

Steve Hawes v Derby away 7th October 1995
Gary France v QPR home 20th April 1974
Aidan Davison v Crystal Palace home 4th September 1999 (I think Davison's only other appearance was when he came on at Man City in the 6-0 defeat on the 21st August after Tracey had been sent off)
