James Beattie

As I've said previously.

I wouldn't be too concerned at losing Nade, Stead, Horse and Shelton

If that was the case, we can bring in Beattie with no qualms from me. But as it stands we don't need him.

Remember, Hulse 9 goals, Stead not much in Championship, Webber poor season, Sharp & Shelton untried in Championship. A little extra talent might not be a bad thing. If we fix mid-field, create a scoring threat, all strikers will have a better time of it. Let's see when the dust clears.

But you are forgetting that Webber had a fantastic season last time we was here.

Hulse 9 goals in a struggling side.

And Sharpy maybe untried, but he has a good pedigree and I can't see any problem in stepping up.

Blades stay quiet on Beattie's £4m transfer

SHEFFIELD UNITED last night declined to comment on whether there has been progress in their bid to sign James Beattie as speculation mounted the Everton striker was in talks with the Championship club.

The Blades have targeted the 29-year-old as they look to bounce back from the blow of relegation and have lodged a £4m bid that sources on Merseyside insist has been accepted.

It is understood Bryan Robson and United chairman Terry Robinson have already opened talks with Beattie's advisors in an attempt to ascertain what sort of wage package will be required to bring him to Bramall Lane.

However, when asked last night if there had been any progress a spokesman for the Blades said: "We will not be saying anything at this time."

Sources in Liverpool suggest Everton are keen to offload Beattie in an attempt to boost their hopes of signing Manchester United striker Alan Smith, who is also interesting Newcastle United and Middlesbrough.

United, who have also been linked with a £1.5m bid for Wigan Athletic winger Kevin Kilbane, had been expected to face competition from Blackburn Rovers for Beattie, a former Ewood Park player, but Mark Hughes instead snapped up Roque Santa Cruz over the weekend.

Robson is also trailing Australian international David Carney with the Sydney FC midfielder yesterday pleading with his club to allow him to speak to the Bramall Lane outfit.

The Socceroo was due to fly to England to discuss terms with the Blades only for Sydney FC executives to pull the plug on the deal at the last minute.

The Australian club are now wanting a solid cash offer before granting the 23-year-old permission to talk to interested parties.

A frustrated Carney said: "Like any other player, I am really keen to explore those options.

"It has been a bit frustrating the last couple of days. One minute I am going to England for talks, the next minute I am not.

"I'd really like the club to put themselves in my shoes. I don't believe they are doing that. I want the opportunity to go and at least see what they have got to offer."

Wigan have signed former Blades midfielder Michael Brown on a three-year deal from Fulham for an undisclosed fee.

The 30-year-old completed his medical yesterday morning before completing the paperwork at the JJB Stadium and was on the substitutes' bench for a friendly against Barnsley last night.

Brown is the Latics' seventh new face, following Titus Bramble, Antoine Sibierski, Mario Melchiot, Andreas Granqvist, Carlo Nash and Jason Koumas into the club.

Manager Chris Hutchings said: "Like all of our signings we have done extensive research on the player and I feel he is someone who brings something new to the table.

"He has huge Premier League experience and is an all-action player who can play a number of roles in the middle of the park."

Looks like we are keeping quiet on Beattie then.

Robson snaps up Beattie in £4m swoop
Last updated at 22:28pm on 3rd August 2007

Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson has pulled off a major coup by signing Everton's James Beattie for £4million.

Robson had been determined to land a big name striker to lift spirits at Bramall Lane following relegation from the Premiership and got his man on a four-year contract.

Sportsmail revealed last week that Robson had targeted the former England striker but Beattie was reluctant to leave Everton - particularly to drop down to the Championship.

Blackburn had expressed interest and Middlesbrough and Birmingham were also monitoring the race but United made the best offer and Robson's persuasive talking did the rest.

The manager said: "I'm delighted. We've got a strike force now that ranks as the best in the Championship.

It's a signal of our intention to return to the top flight."

Robson has signed winger David Carney from Sydney FC but has failed to land Wigan midfielder Kevin Kilbane.

Looks like we have landed him according to the mail.
