Jake Wright

This will sound absolutely ******* crazy but I'd love to see him in an England shirt (hypothetically and imaginatively) and see how he would do. Generally totally unfazed.

In fact as soon as the next Football Manager comes out I will put him in the team ;)
You get a like for the daftest post of the night.

It's got a bit of the Bob Booker about it. We actually look better with him than Stearman which gives Wilder a fantastic problem. Reading of the game was again excellent today
Always thought Bob contributed more on the pitch than Vinnie Jones ever did in our 1st season in division one.

Jake Wright - he sees things so far before they happen, he'd already spent his winnings from the McGregor-Mayweather fight in January :)

Very interesting how, despite the inevitable clamor for investment to compete at this mystical 'higher level' we were all warned about, that we are slowly reverting to last season's team.

It's unfortunate the injury to Stearman, but we are now back to the same back 5 as last year with only the exception of Stevens. Were it not for injury, we'd likely have Moore in goal.

Despite initial dalliance with Carruthers, who was a signing last January anyway, we have reverted back to the Holy Trinity of Coutts-Fleck-Duffy. If we continue to play 3-5-2, I'm struggling to see how that unit improves. For all the 'better' players that may be touted there is a somewhat telepathic understanding among these three that you simply cannot quantify financially. You can't buy understanding or familiarity. Throw Brooks in there as an off the bench maverik as well as Carruthers and you've a great formula unless injury ravages the team. Which touch wood, training is such that we don't seem to attract too many injuries.

As per last year, Billy has proved himself already to be the go to guy in front of goal and the only opening in the forwards is alongside him. Just like last year, you get the impression Clarke and Lavery are ok to rotate and Evans still remains a wildcard. It's just a question of whether we can get a partner for Billy who can add further goals and also inject pace.

The only reservation I am left with in the window is if Wilder, for some reason, feels a need to revert to 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2. Do we have the players to perform just as well with this? Full back we are still well served. O'Connell I'm sure could find a reliable partner out of Stearman, CCV, Basham and Wright, though I think the latter two are more suited in a 3, CCV, difficult to comment. Coutts and Fleck would continue as is. Out wide we suddenly look to lack a little depth. Brooks is an obvious one. Duffy would be given a shot, but then you are down to unconventional or untried - Carruthers, Thomas. If this is a possibility then it may be a final consideration for Wilder.

Up front the same question remains. Get a real quality performer, even if it costs a bit and we can look beyond holding our own. It is a bit of a Trevor Hockey moment in terms of our ambitions. Hockey as my Dad tells me was great getting them up, but if United really wanted to kick on, probably needed to be upgraded. Same here, if Evans hits previous heights then we can relax but it is looking at present like Billy plus rotation of Clarke, Lavery, Evans and possibly Brooks.

As a team, we are Jake Wright. Plenty of doubters, then all of a sudden you start to realise they boy might just be good enough!

He continues to look very assured at this level and you'd think he'd played at the second tier for the majority of his career, not for a few weeks. We're lucky to have him.

I've just read somewhere that such is his rise that he's never commanded a transfer fee in his entire career  how can that be? Another superb bit of business by Wilder and Knill.

and to think some people wanted had written him off and had him out of the door before he'd even kicked a ball...I said he would make the step up.

Watching him last season I thought he did well.

Watching him again this season, and I kept an eye on him, what with wondering if he could make the step up, there's just "something" about Jake Wright.

He's got a sort of sloppy walk, seems to rarely sprint, just looks so unlikely...

It's almost like he doesn't look that bothered, or have to try. He's just there, in the spot he needs to be in, when he needs to be there,

Sorry, but your Dad couldn't be more wrong. In those days every team had to have a ball-winner - Hunter, Storey, Harris, Styles. Werewolf did that job for us. Win the ball and give it to Tony were his instructions from Gentleman John Harris. He did that magnificently, but a lot lot more besides. In the top flight he was more valuable than before. Believe me, if you stuck Werewolf in front of our back 3 we wouldn't have conceded most of those goals against Leicester.

Magic Days, but the Magic is Coming Back.

I will tell you exactly what it is with Jake Wright and I've seen him play a lot of games so far.

He isn't quick, he isn't particularly commanding and he certainly doesn't strike me as a stand out player, What he does possess is a magnificent footballing brain.

Personally I wouldn't say that either O'Connell or Basham are what I would class as great centre halves as part of a conventional centre-half pairing. Both like to go forwards a lot, and also are liable to get caught out of position.

What Jake Wright is, is the ballast, the cool head at the back, who knows exactly where needs to be, he is a player who can read the game better than most, and when he has dropped back deep in defence, he knows where the attack is coming from and where it is heading and he knows exactly where he needs to be and what he needs to do.

Having Jake Wright in the centre of a back three pairing with O'Connell and Basham he allows them licence to get forward and join in the attack, giving United another attacking dimension. I don't even think that Wright would be anywhere near the same sort of player as part of a centre half duo either.

The other observation I've made about Jake Wright is about how simple he keeps it, and how calm he is with the ball. If the ball gets rolled out to him, he has already found space, and if you watch him closely you will see he always plays a simple pass to a colleague in space. Never anything fancy, nor any balls aimlessly hoofed upfield.

I would even go as far as to say he has every inch of the same look that Paul McGrath did when he played for us with his excellent football brain, and calmness in the back line, and I did doubt he would be one of the players who would have been able to make the step up for us, I actually think he will end up once again becoming the most vital cog in Chris Wilders team this season.

Jake's magnificent run of undefeated league matches ended yesterday. Not seen it mentioned elsewhere.
It had to happen sometime I suppose. What a great run Jake lad! Well done from me.

How many games was it in the end? Has anyone got the stats?

He was rather sloppy in the first half and that's where his record was lost.

A good run though that stretches over more than a season.

Not posted for ages on here as I got the Maupey ITK wrong and I can’t be arsed with the pelters! just for the record that blurred photo of a player in a blades shirt was him but his agent bumped the price up at the last minute and Wilder walked away. It was hours from being signed. Based on macburnies early contribution I wish we got the deal over the line!

Unreal player for us but I did hear from my source that he became quite disruptive towards the back end of his time with us, wilder tried to shift him out a few times and he wouldn’t go! Just thought I’d share that!

😴😴😴

I remember wilder complaining about some players sat on their contracts. I deduced he was talking the likes of Holmes. If what you are saying about Wright is correct then that’s disappointing

I really don’t understand this anger towards players who have the audacity to want a wage every month, until the expiration of their contract.

What on earth does anyone expect them to do, if their clubs given them a contract of a specific length and no other club is prepared to offer them a better one, then you honour it.

If the club are happy enough to take the profit off the Kyle Walkers, they’ve got to be prepared to accept the losses on the Dean Hammonds. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Whilst I largely agree I can understand frustration at younger players as they still can make a career fir themselves by taking a step down. However why would you expect a player late in their career to take a cut. The likes of Clarke, Wright and Holmes wont earn this amount again.

Not saying I agree or disagree just quoting what wilder said a while ago. Unless I’m in their shoes I can’t really say what I’d do but you you could argue that if they are coming to the end of their careers then they would want to be playing every week as opposed to sat watching Jeff Stelling every Saturday. Depends what motivates you I suppose

Making the best living he can for himself and his family would, I suggest, be a pretty big motivator?

Quite possibly yes I was expressing my disappointment where the earlier post said he had become disruptive towards the end. No idea if that is true or not, he really doesn’t seem the sort but the 2 choices should always be sit on your contract and accept you’re sat in the stand every week or go and play your football elsewhere

Jake Wright, Leon Clarke & Mark Duffy can sit on whatever remains of their contracts. They've all made outstanding contributions to the privileged position that we are in today.

Ricky Holmes, Nathan Thomas & Heneghan (if he hasn't completely gone yet) on the other hand didn't and are all at an age where they can be ambitious enough to take on a fresh challenge.

One of the best defensive readers of a game I’ve seen.

If he had first been played at the Centre of a back three when he was 20 instead of when he was in his 30s he would have played at the highest level for many years.

Disruptive how?

Correct Jake Wright is settled in the area and had a house built 2 years ago why would he want to go anywhere else?
