Jack O'Connell 100 consecutive league starts

Not seen this posted anywhere but if JO'C starts today it will be his 100th consecutive league start for the Blades dating back to November 2016. The last game he didn't start was against Shrewsbury at home on 19th November 2016.

Absolutely phenomenal achievement for an outfield player in this day and age of squad rotation. He's also not missed a minute in 70 Championship matches before today. To stay that consistently good and injury free is amazing really.

I wonder when the last time this was done? Probably by a goalkeeper. Hope he is recognised for this before the match today.

That's right. Jagielka started 133 straight league games from April 2004 to the Wigan game when we were relegated.

The club record is 203 consecutive league starts by Jack Smith, our keeper for most of the 1930s. I think Alan Woodward has the outfield record.

O'Connell is already up to 102 straight games, as opposed to starts, as he came on as a sub in the 3 league games in 2016-7 prior to his starts run beginning. None of the other players on the list made a sub appearance during their runs.

The last league game O'Connell did not feature in at all was the 3-3 draw at Bradford on 22 October 2016. He was an unused sub that day.

Next captain material?

I think the Brighton interest has (understandably) really turned his head this season. I’m pretty sure he’ll be off this Summer and wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a been a little bit of afters between himself and Wilder following the club’s rejection to the offers (I’m sure his agent is in there in the background stirring too).

His form hasn’t dipped completely, he’s still churning out the 7/10s, he’s solid, but he doesn’t attack with as much vigour anymore and I have noticed his body language doesn’t bear the same enthusiasm as the last two seasons, he doesn’t seem to celebrate our goals as much and of course there were the rumours (PrestonBlade) that he’d done a bit of mouthing over the Summer. Maybe I’m reading too much into it all and if he does move this Summer then it should be with our blessing as he’s been outstanding for us over three years.

It sounds as though the club may already be planning for life post O’Connell by scouting Jake Cooper of Millwall. I’m told he’s excellent and his stats back this up.

So, Jack's run ended at 106 consecutive starts, and 109 consecutive games.

That ties him for 9th all time for consecutive starts, and if you count his 3 sub appearances he's 8th all time for consecutive games. Not too shabby.

Hopefully he'll be back Saturday to start again!

Played through the pain barrier with his achilles after Christmas last season, so quite the record in the circumstances. It's not the worst thing in the world to have him resting after playing so much football, so long as results aren't negatively effected.
