Anyone who leaves school without learning basic literacy needs to fucking go back there until they are able to. The people who teach them should join them.

Damn your eyes Itsinyer!!!!!

Why didn't you fall into my carefully laid trap of putting 'of' instead of 'have'!!!!!!!........and thus robbing me of being able to reply by putting a picture of a small boy catching a large fish!!!!......
Are you sure you didn't realise after it was too late to edit ;)

The American school system used to keep kids from going up to the next year if they failed basic literacy and numeracy. Some kids stayed in year 7 too long and it became ridiculous. Perhaps the English language should be revised. Spanish kids don’t have spelling tests , apart from where a letter b and a letter v could be confused, as nearly everything is phonetic, unlike English. I find it interesting that some posters write in pigeon English on our two main forums. For example “abart, mi owd, could of, etc. Would you send the likes of Rod, of Blades Mad fame, back to school?

Intentionally misspelling takes a fair bit of skill and can be humorous if done properly.

I think it is.

And here's why...

For Evan's sake!

Who on hearth is risponsible for this borlz up?

It reminds me of the thyme I bought a car sticker from the club shop and it had "Shefield United" on it.

The irony of it is that the story is reported by Johnston Press, an organisation who regularly turn out sub-standard work.

But, come on United! Do not sink to those levels!

Totally & absolutely agree - of course spelling is important.
English is our bleeding language & as a result, grammar & punctuation are just as important as spelling - even getting the apostrophe in the right place. All of them have the potential to change the meaning of what’s being said if they’re wrong.

If we let people off with spelling what’s next - maths not mattering!?!?

Hang on, isn't "unforgettable" spelt with a double t?

I think we tend to forget this is a football forum and our only bond is the love of United.

We are from a variety of socio economic backgrounds. Some will have been better educated than others and our jobs will also be suitably varied.

I could possible trounce anyone on here with the inner workings of The Mines and Quarries Act (1952) and similarly someone could easily befuddle me about the inner workings of a central heating boiler.

In all my years of going to Bramall Lane I can't recall an occasion where I have talked to the person next to me about their job or upbringing. I have possibly discussed holidays but the main topic has always been United.

If someone can get their idea or point across, whether you agree with it or not, in a comprehensible way, then the spelling ,grammar and syntax don't really bother me.

We shouldn't belittle anyone because they have spelt some something wrong, put an apostrophe where it shouldn't go, or split an infinitive.

All our comments are valid and we can agree or disagree with those comments as we like.

We are all equal. We are all United

They could become collector's items, like those stamps with mistakes on the perforations. Might bag a few before they get recalled.

First sensible post on the subject, looking to make a bob or two, got to pay the bills. Anyhow don't know what all the fuss is about it's called "artistic licence" so the symmetry of the calendar face is right, what's an to the F between friends, don't forget we are "THE" United to the detriment of all others.

Ive had a pig on at me on facebook ,glorifying in it ,their level these days.
We might have an f missing ,they've got an effing lot more was my response, followed by the typical drivel they like to come up with.

Sooner have Dicks leck sire than support a shit team with a rusty fookin ground.

Yes, it does matter.......but.......for anyone challenged by the intricacies of the English language, it can sometimes offer walls that they struggle to overcome.

Generally what I value is intent, so if someone can't spell or punctuate correctly, yet I can see where they're going with their message, that'll do for me.

Anyone who gets on their high horse about this particular skill, remind them that the esteemed newspaper, The Grauniad, never fails to remind us that even the good and the worthy fuck up when it comes to mastery of their native tongue.

Yes I agree, but we aren't talking about an individual that struggles with the English language. We're talking about the commercial department of a professional organisation that can't even spell it's own name.

Or rather, it can. But, it clearly doesn't have the necessary checks and processes in place to guard against this kind of thing happening.

All complaints should go to Grange Communications who have produced this under licence from the club.

I doubt the club had any proof reading responsibility.

Well then they should have. Simple as that. The commercial department of the club is ultimately responsible for what goes out in public with the club's name on it - not some 3rd party who have produced it for them. It's the club's job to check everything like this before it goes out. It's like I've just posted, there are obviously no such checks and processes in place. Which suggests a very unprofessionally run commercial department to me.

Think you may have something there. Isn't there a thread about no young kids away or goalie kits being available for Christmas.

I bought two blades calendars, one for each of my boys for Christmas. Just had a look and they are the ‘one F’ in Sheffield ones. Ha ha, bet the kids wont notice

Tell 'em to hang on to them, might be collector's items in 20 years time!

Do you know any of the commercial department or ever seen them at work? They’re an exceptionally hard-working, and very professional bunch. Poor post

I thought this thread was about spelling, not corporate adherence to the English language?

Regarding whether it's a departmental responsibility, it usually comes down to individuals within a department, therefore mistakes are always a possibility I'd have thought? But your point is fair, as the line in which this passed, enabling it to be proofed, checked, and ultimately printed, would suggest that several people weren't on their game.

As for The Guardian, I see it's sometime error capacity as one of British life's vagaries. In short, mistakes happen, and if someone can't differentiate between the correct spelling of a word and the fact that it's rather odd spelling was actually intended to be spelt another way then making a mountain out of a molehill comes to mind.
