I've made a mistake

OK, so up to now I've thought we were a bunch of good players who were playing out of their skin as a unit and over achieving. After today i've realised these are a bunch of players who are not only one hundred per centers, but who are extremely talented. The position we are in isn't luck, it's down to pure talent. I honestly believe the sky is the limit for this group. We are 5th and deservedly so. Chris Wilder is the best manager in the country, I just hope we appreciate him why we've got him, because he's going to the very top.

I think it's both.

Players can improve, and great managers push their players to improve greatly.

Too many people think in black and white terms. Players are either 'good' or 'bad' and cannot and will not change, therefore any increase in performance is due to some other factor.

It's not true. A good player is one who plays well. There's little difference between talent and hard work. Talent is just hard work that was done already to get you to this level, so it appears effortless, when the truth is it was anything but.

As Chris Wilder often says 'A lot of effort away from the lights'.. that's why we are as good as we are.

I really believe that if our players played at other clubs they wouldn’t be anywhere near as good.

They are performing so well on a consistent level because they are given simple and clear instructions that is achievable.
They are coached how to play within our tactics and have familiarity. Wilder plays the same players and same style every match.

In some ways Garth Crookes was right when he said “I‘ve watched Sheff Utd and their football is quite basic”.
We don‘t rely on individual brilliance or flair.....most of our goals are tap ins from close range.....however it’s the simplicity that makes us so good.
It‘s as though Wilder and Knill are genius’s who are creating history by re-writing the coaching manual.

Ferguson at Man U won shit loads with some very average players.
Neville brothers for starters!

not many of his players went on to be world beaters anywhere else other than Man U.
They played a certain way and were underpinned by a handful of top quality players that played for him and knew their jobs inside out.
I see a very similar thing with is, and agree that many of these lads are playing at their Max and probably the best they will ever play.
I hope they remain grounded and realise that, then they will want to stay and we can build and improve gradually.

Really think that Wilder has developed a plan/ tactics to play to each players strengths, so they look better than they actually are.

Baldock- I remember on the MK Dons forum they said he’s a talented lad, has pace and good going forward but they said he can’t defend with his big weakness being that he gets caught upfield out of position. Wilder focuses on those strengths and in order to cover his weakness he has Chris Basham close by to cover if and when Baldock’s gets caught out of position.

Basham - he’s been played as a central defender in a 2 and is at best average, he’s played as right back and is at best average, so he’s been tried in midfield and again he‘s decent but kind of average. Basham isnt a great player but he’s massively versatile able to play 3 positions.
So Wilder sets up tactics where Bashsm is playing 3 positions in the same match.
He’s generally central defender but has Egan next to him covering his mistakes, then Basham covers the right back position covering Baldock’s mistakes.
Basham has a superb engine so he‘s also encouraged to push upfield into midfield to strengthen our numbers there.

They are a good bunch of talented players and deserve a massive amount of praise, but they clearly aren’t world beaters.

Wilder is a special manager, it’s as simple as that. Only the greats of football management would be able to replicate what Wilder is doing.
