It's a conspiracy I tell you, a conspiracy.

Absolutely, it could be loaned out to one of McCabes sons, no interest charged, reversed into another Company, shares issued, shares bought, and then folded back into SUFC at some time in the future ............ at a time time to suit the Owners

So he'll be £48.6m out of pocket rather than £50m?! I guess we'll see in the accounts!

Anyway, I'm going to draw the line under this. I'm looking forward to seeing who we bring in on loan and buzzing about our current form, manager and squad.

Onwards and upwards (from my perspective at least)

Oh dear. No conspiracy theories, eh?

What tired old nonsense. SUFC has cost the McCabes a great deal of money. They'll never get it back.

The squad is stronger than last season but weaker than it was before Murphy was sold. That's a step back we didn't need to make. That's poor.

As for the second point, if they were going to keep it for loans Phipps was definitely not doing his job properly by suggesting otherwise.

Yet again, wearily....

We tried to spend a lot of money yesterday. Other parties prevented us from doing so...

I think people are more sanguine, with the exception of a notable few, given the signings we have made over the last 12-18 months which have been indicative of significant investment in the context of an L1 club, albeit with lofty ambitions.

I'd also suspect people are viewing this in the context that we look a decent contender for automatic and we're playing well.

For me, the way we're playing I cannot wait for the next league game. We're bang in form with loads of firepower.

Personally I dont think we are "bang on form" we still look vuneralble (not knocking the great results, but I do fear that we are still not getting out of second gear and putting teams to bed) and this will cost us. (and looking at albeit the JPT it seems an inbuilt within the ethos of the whole squad)

we should have smashed a team like Blackpool by 4 or 5 goals (like other teams seem to be doing) last night when we were on top we scored a goal persisted with the going forward for a further 5 minutes then reverted to keeping the ball at the back (which then cost us the goal through a mistake) these are the problems which were prevelent last season and have yet to be irradicated (Adkins has stated in several interviews we are not breaking quickly enough so he sees what I am seeing.... he is the manager... if he cant get them to do it then no-one can!)

I am not unhappy with the signings we have made during the summer window however I said (and again clear Adkins agrees given his target) we needed at least 2 CB as No1 and No2 Priority, we have only got half of this...

people will say well the loan window opens next week... that's true... but if you want a player to last through the most hectic period (Christmas) then you need to wait until October before you can make a signing. which is another month down the line waiting for something to happen. (I beleive Clough got slammed for this too... O'Grady and even Brayford... i.e. focussed too much on getting in said player and didnt seem to have a back up if it didnt happen.)

I want NA to get his actual targets, not second best back-ups. Clearly, so does he....

My main concern re: deadline day and our transfer's in general is when we bring in an absolute turd because we're 'expected to sign someone' or we need someone in a certain position and perhaps have failed in our first two or three targets...

We don't have to think too far back for illustrations of that...

Flick-ons ... ?

pommpey

I'm sure we've just been through nearly 400 posts on this in pommpey's delightfully entertaining "Ha ha ha ha ha ha" thread (apologies if I've missed out any "ha's", pommpey).

When all transfer dealings are done behind closed doors, I don't understand how anyone can form the opinion that we could have done more, without knowing exactly what has been done...

That's a valid point BUT when the outcome is the same disappointment over and over again, it's hard not to draw adverse conclusions/assumptions.

So perhaps somebody could explain to me a bit more about the conspiracy they feel is at work at Bramall Lane. I’d quite like to understand.

I think Pommpey had that about right to be fair - it "appears" to be a conspiracy; in reality it is probably a combination of some factors outside our control which we can only influence (other clubs, players) by dangling suitable carrots and some within our control ( the structure and set-up of the scouting and transfer department - new bloke in so he needs to be given a chance to get his feet under the table and get things sorted). For the first time in a long time I am prepared to give the current Board a little slack in that money would be made available. The signing of Brayford and Sharp would suggest it is, though there is always the penny wise pound foolish aspect to consider.

Sometimes incompetence can often be interpreted as intelligence to satisfy the requirements of a good conspiracy theory. I can remember numerous poor deals and very few transfer coups going back over decades. The truth is we have been shit in the transfer market for years, although this summer was a slightly better performance than the debacle Clough presided over last season. At least the players bought were fit enough to play unlike Higdon, Coutts and Wallace.

There has been at least one (pretty large) "lie", which hasn't helped - the statement that we "no longer need to sell our best players" - a statement disproven in the cases of Harry Maguire & Jamie Murphy, both coincidentally sold right at the start of the last two seasons,

I suspect the missing word was "no longer financially need to sell our best players". No doubt JP would argue that if the player wants out and you have offered him all the carrots you are able to change their mind then you sell or stick the asset with the kid's to devalue, rot and spread dissent.

lets say he is after a no1 target (lets say its Burn for ease sake) we have spent the majority of this window going after him.... not got him... we try again in the loan window still dont get him... during this time we lose Kennedy (as his knees arent up to it, Edgar has to miss some games due to call ups and Collins Calf goes again... (not unfeasible) we are then left with either having to go with Alcock/McEverly/McGahay/Basham at centre back (worked so well last season I dont know why I am worried....)

we limp into the January hoping that he will come and he buggers off to another championship club and we have to start again,

I would expect Adkins to have a plan a,b and c where if it looks like we are being messed about (like Chris O'Grady) we go after the other target(s)

otherwise surely he is just as bad as Clough for putting all his eggs in one basket?

Absolutely, but the time has not yet come to give up on the primary targets, or at least Nigel doesn't think so. I'm inclined to go with him rather than either of us. I would have thought you might agree? That is not a blanket "Trust in Nigel unconditionally" argument (though such would be valid given his pedigree) but of direct application to yesterday's events.

How does the "Where's the Murphy money" and other such knee-jerk tantrums fit into this? It doesn't, does it? The DDDs should be blaming Nigel, if anyone....

Have a like, but I have no idea what a DDD is

It's a Deadline Day Devotee. It's a pressure group dedicated to signing players on Transfer Deadline Days, whether good, bad or fucking useless, they don't care.

They meet twice a year for a Skyathon at Max's house. Jim White is Honarary Life President.

It's no coincidence that petty cash is light to the tune of £50m though.

On a conciliatory note, Sheffield Star reports today that we'll be going after our targets when the loan window reopens.

that is some consolation but building a side on loan players in key roles brings it's own problems at the end of the season (if not before) when the they go back. At the end of 13/14 season all was looking great but then Brayford and Coady went back and we suffered as a result. If Edgar proves to be the key player for us in central defence this season it could be the same problem again.
