The Arsenal figure is misleading because for anything other than the games against major/top 6 teams, there are at least 5000 empty seats every week. The seats are sold but the ticket-holders just don't turn up.
While I'm sure the same phenomenon occurs at Stamford Bridge, OT, Anfield etc.. the scale of it at Arsenal is much, much greater than elsewhere.

Sorry but being a pedant I have to point out that the Arsenal figure is correct as it's tickets sold, not actual attendance.

And it's well known that Gooners have adopted Pigfan's tactics of dressing up as seats.

No its not too big. If we had bigger crowds I wouldn't be able to put my feet on the seat in front, lean back and enjoy the game.

If you don't have a big ground or capacity you have every chance of having a good percentage, unless you go to the pigs ground then that is pity full, but they are massive or did they mean massive spaces.

For a League 1 club our attendences are phenomenal. However, BDTBL is a Premiership quality ground and when we're up where we belong we'll be drawing 30,000 every match.

They have to give so many thousand per game to locals for free (100,000 per year, I think to the local council, who then give them to local residents?). IIRC a large part of Leyton Orient's argument against the arrangement was based on this as it will take away their future support (and yes, it does stink, but you know.. we have to think of the poor Wet Sham fans, etc, etc).

This is irrelevant, we all now know that the key metric for judging support is revenue per supporter. Ask Sky to produce that.

The record attendance at Upton Park is something like 40900... historically they got steady but unspectacular crowds*.. but to be fair to them, once the post euro-96 uplift in attendances happened they couldn't expand because of the site they're currently on. I believe they think they'll sell out in the first season at the new stadium so they'll get a new record attendance in their first home game.

*And they have had 95000 at Wembley for a Fairs Cup final that was basically WHUFC fans and some neutrals and UEFA allocations... so mostly Hammers.... and don't forget they also took part in the first Wembley final.

So, and basic life experience bears this out - they have many surplus fans - many of whom have never been to a West Ham home game, but might be able to now. They'll only suffer if they ever get relegated again and play in a half-empty stadium - but the money involved now - and the advantages they've been granted by taxpayers building them a stadium - means that's now highly unlikely.
