After watching the game last night, it showed the gulf in class between us and a team who will do well in the premiership.

I can only feel that if we do get promoted we dont have the squad to keep us there? Theres only 2-3 players who I think could cut it.

1 year in the premiership would do more damage than good compared to preparing for a couple of seasons in the championship????

It would transform the finances of the club and McCabe might finally be able to find a buyer/investtor who could keep us in the Prem/top end Championship.

You are joking, right? Even if we went up and finished bottom of the league, as long as we were careful with our money we would come back down with parachute payments and be able to strengthen and be in a better position to go up and survive.

There's no bad time to be promoted to the PL.

Even if you finish bottom on 10 points it still transforms the club's financial position.

You take it whenever you can. Especially as the Championship is becoming increasingly difficult/rich.

Going up and coming down again would make our support even worse though. That would be the main negative.

The squad and structure at the club is at its best ever for a premiership assault.

I said to a pig a few weeks back and he was flabbergasted - "I'm glad we didn't get promoted under Clough". He questioned that as surely any promotion would be amazing, true, it would, but we would've come straight back down as he is tactically inept as a manager.

Back to point, imagine if Clough had come in and we were a championship club and he somehow managed to get us promoted, we'd be an embarrassment to the top flight - imagine if Adkins got us there

We need to get there whilst Wilder is still at the top of his game, because anything could happen if we did.

Promotion would be a very bad thing Buxton. Wilder realises this and that is why he has taken us on a run that has brought us 9 points in the last 10 games and without fuss or bluster has quietly led us out of the danger zone that is the Play Off positions. o_O

Promotion can never be a bad thing. Besides our money men will give Wilder some serious cash from the windfall of premier league cash, CW could get as much as £10m for new signings.

I think a far more holistic approach would help if we attempt to decide if being promoted had benefits.

Putting aside the total figure associated with being a member of the Prem club, we'd have wages, fees, players agents, all of these would increase according to what our ambition was meant to be. Do player agreements improve as a result of promotion? Does the club adopt the view that we want to make a serious stab at remaining in the Prem? If so it will mean spending on a scale that we've never done previously. Does anyone think that would happen with our current board? There are, of course, parachute payments if we were to be relegated, but again, this addresses the question of our intentions. Do we possess the ambition to want to compete at the highest level, or do we simply want to remain a club that imagines what life would be like as a team with ambition?

Personally I doubt promotion is a realistic hope this season. It might be that we do the unimaginable and take that step towards the Prem, but as of this minute I cannot see it happening. We're certainly in a better shape than we were a year ago, but I wonder if there's a part of our make-up that goes into denial where the realities of modern football are concerned. The fact that we were in a far healthier position not too long ago, a time when a push from the board would've helped, yet it's clear that the sums necessary to bring in reinforcements weren't forthcoming. The upside was that we didn't sell any of our more promising players. It's a tricky situation though, one that only the board can answer.

You could just promote, take the shitload of money you get, give it a shot but invest a lot in club facilities, youth academy etc. and not to much on players. If you go down you get another shitload of money. And you're back in the Championsship with so much more money and better facilities.

And that's the worst case scenario.

That description has avoided the question of what team we'd be left with. Would relegation mean that our better players would attempt to jump ship? Would we be in good enough shape to make a concerted effort to regain promotion? I agree, having improved facilities would be a positive, but the main thing, the only thing that matters where a professional club is involved is what happens on the pitch. If we're struggling then the increase in fans that we've witnessed would begin to take a turn for the worse. It happened before, so trust me, it'll happen again unless we adopt an overview that means we have genuine ambitions to compete at a higher level.

As long as we don't appoint Robson on relegation it surely has to be better than perennial mid table mediocrity in the Championship.

Our finances are unlikely to improve as it is to take us into the Prem looking like genuine players.

It's all irrelevant anyway at present.

Yes the first team has priority ofcourse, but when we're in the Premier League we are way more interesting for quality players. The good players would be more then happy to renew their contract after promotion, so even if you go down the season after they have at least 2/3 years left in their contracts, which mean that you don't have to sell them. So I think it only benefit the strength of the team, and this is the going up and down scenario. If we can go up and stay in the PL another season we can go the Burnley route.

Would screw another of our traditional songs,

"We aint got a barrel of money ..........

......... err hang on a moment, actually we have

You are, of course, correct in your reading of what could happen if we managed to achieve promotion. My concern is if the Board should choose to do this on the 'cheap', so out of a significant amount of money Wilder is given a small-ish percentage with which to make the impossible possible. Current Premiership transfer valuations are obscene, but it's what we'd have to deal with. The very best players would be out of reach, but given a decent scouting network (which would need it's own investment), and the core of what should prove a capable squad who could remain in the Premiership, then there's no reason why we couldn't emulate any number of clubs currently playing in the Premiership.....but I return to the reasons what the Board is driven by, to make this club a viable Premiership team, or one that seems immune to the possibilities of achieving promotion?

Without wishing to go round in circles, the probable solution is to have new owners willing to invest. Easier said than done no doubt, but that would seem the obvious answer to all these questions.

I don't get why we wouldn't want to go up.

It would transform the club.

We might have a go and stay up, but provided we are well managed it could set us up for a few years. We could certainly advance plans for the ground as well.

We're competing at the top of the Championship having targeted the player of the year winners from League One.

Even if we went up we would be targeting some of the POTY winners from the Championship.

Yes we would lose a few to outlandish fees if we went down, but we could improve the overall quality such that if we went down, we would have an excellent chance of competing for the top two.

Yo-yoing for a couple of years wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Manage the income correctly and still expect to probably be relegated and only win a hand full of games all season. But would give us massive income for the next 4 years, make the club much stronger in the long run and more competitive financially back in the championship. If we could by some miracle survive in PL would be incredible
