Yes, I know it's another one about Coutts - but with a slightly different angle and seeing as we are generally happy bunnies these days, we should take that opportunity of discussing the positives for a change.

There have been some interesting posts about our three main midfield players recently (Duffy/Fleck and Coutts) and I suppose BAsham in the mix too, but mainly about who is best.

How about who is the most important?

For me it's Coutts - bit like an NFL quarterback - he gives us that tempo, the starting point, the focal point.

Someone mentioned in an earlier post that he could be suspended for Coventry, which turns out to be wrong thank goodness. Don't think we have anyone that could do his job.

Decided against a poll - you get too much aggro :(

They're all very important.

Take Coutts out and we are suddenly less confident at playing it out from the back in a quick fashion.
Take Duffy out and we suddenly lack someone that can unlock a defense and we look predictable.
Take Fleck out and we lack that bite in midfield and someone to link defense to attack.

I think it's pretty pointless deciding who the most important is.

COUUTTSSS...There it is!

Bang on! All as important as each other! Id even add Scougall to that mix too, he has sure added something to the midfield when coming on this season.

I do feel that Fleck is someone we have lacked in previous years, for example... he is not afraid to shoot and always looks to pass the ball forward.
Coutts was played out of position most of the time in previous seasons, RM, RW, and this clearly did not suit him, he is thriving now hes is controlling the game and passing the ball about.
Duffy, at first I was not a fan. But, he sure proved me wrong. Great on the ball, nice feet and dribbling and in the right place at the right time.

Without them all, we would not be the team we are and how good we are doing. However, I am not convinced this trio would be suitable for the Championship looking ahead, if we go up. Only time will tell!

As a guy in front of us shouted out near the end of Saturday's game: 'I've got nothing to complain about! Come on, Wilder, get it sorted!'

If Coutts is our conductor then Fleck's our driver. Unlike last season there's no fare-dodging passengers on this journey

What I want to know is:

Who's checking the tyre presures and making sure the bell works?

What happens when KM decides to move to driver only busses for efficiency?

Does his wife look like Olive?

What colour is the bus? Red would be London so that's not on. The old Sheffield Transport looked good except there was too much blue. Would it be the dreary FirstBus grey? We really need to know.

Would a light rail system be more cost effective in the long run?

These and many more questions need sorting before you give Coutts the satchel and peaked cap.

It is very clear that Wilder is instructing his goalkeeper to play out from the back as much as is possible.

Where this is to defenders, which it will be in the main, then their further instruction is to get the ball to Paul Coutts as quickly as you can.

So yes !

There's a good mix in the way Wilder is using his players. He's got them playing with a lot of freedom while essentially sticking to what they're good at. Having Coutts and Fleck able to drop back as deep as they like and pick it up from the defenders allows our three centre halves to stick to the basics, Duffy is able to play more or less a free role dropping into space and picking wide positions when needed. Then Freeman and Lafferty can get forward without worrying too much about what's behind them.

No player looks like he's being asked to do more or less than he's capable. Compare this to last season where the structure seemed so rigid that there was rarely off the ball movement, players daren't (or were told not to) press high up the pitch in spite of assurances that that was how the manager wanted to play. Coutts in particular had some shocking games, but never did he ever get the chance to pick the ball up and see that many players around him that were getting in the right places to receive the ball.

We have to put a large part down to personnel imo because in one transfer window the quality of the squad has gone up massively, but the players that have stayed behind are being used in a far more productive manner. Freeman, Coutts, Done, and Scougall (in the small bits he's played) are way ahead of where they were a year ago.

I believe we are missing all of the unseen work of Mr Hammond. Poor move by Wilder to terminate his contract ;)

Wimp!

You could have taken a poll to see who wanted a poll.

Nice to see that finally he has discovered his shooting boots. One net buster and another one that took someone's leg off.

Whatever the result, I would have demanded a rerun!

Great post.

Just listened to the Wilder interview from yesterday and fortunately he has a clause in his contract for another year if he reaches 'X' amount of games. The way wilder phrased it, he believes Sharp, Freeman, Basham, Done & Coutts will all trigger the clause for another year in the coming months. Which is excellent news!!
