Amongst many good performances one name that was noticeably absent from the majority of lips was Captain Fantastic Billy Sharp. He never gets the plaudits he deserves in my view, and although l don’t think he was the best player why is it taken almost a given that he is going to work hard and play well?

He’s always one of the first to be criticised and when asked about him even Wilder sort of brushed him aside and mentioned Clark. His performance yesterday was a brilliant one but also a very balanced one in terms of closing down, tracking back, making CLEARANCES, linking up play and as usual scoring a fantastic poachers goal (after looking like he had messed up). But still people mentioning everyone but him, leaving him an afterthought.

Why is this? Can’t just be because he’s a blade? I know it’s been discussed to death already but does anybody have any idea what this lad has to do to be praised to the level he deserves. He does far more for this team than ‘score goals’(as if that isn’t enough from a striker) he has been known to go missing on occasion but not to the extent of Clark who very rarely has a bad word said against him.

This is not a moan by any stretch of the imagination, great atmosphere at the Lane yesterday and a great performance for the whole team. Just something I noticed.

Billy played well yesterday but if you really believe that Clarke " very rarely has a bad word said against him " then you don't read this forum very often and why bring him into it anyway ?

Not saying he’s never criticised mate, of course he is I’m fairly sure every player perhaps bar fleck has been moaned about on here at some point, but when Billy goes missing he becomes a waste of time, or past it, or only in the team because of his allegiance to the club. Clarke was brought into it by Wilder in an interview where no questions were asked about him. Just sharing a thought mate I think they are both great players and have served the club well I just think that if you are going to criticise a player when they aren’t doing great, u should praise them equally when they are performing.

Noticed a change in Bill this season ,he looks a lot stronger and is better at shielding and holding the ball. Looks like hes worked on his strength and doesn't look for free kicks all the time. He is better for it and looking a top striker ,his goal yesterday was reminiscent of Gerd Muller ,brilliant strikers finish.

I think he is actually very good at holding up play. Clarke and McG are obviously bigger and stronger but Billy in my opinion is positive, he has become hard to knock off the ball and plays good passes out wide where others might just play a simple pass back to the defenders.

I agree. He looks to have lost weight, probably not fat, but bulk around his chest. He's more mobile and he's getting about the pitch at lot quicker. As a result he's not clipping people with mistimed challenges & he's able do more positive things with the ball, instead of looking for a free kick. Last season he looked like his heart was 100% in it, but his legs weren't. This season both are at 100%. He won a couple of brilliant free kicks (tell a lie, should've won two. One was strangely given the other way) against a much bigger/stronger defender, due to BS's strength & quality of touch. He's always been dangerous in the box, and is a very good finisher, but this season's BS is a good 25% more lethal than last season's. And long may it continue. :)
