His work rate and desire definitely dipped in my opinion and whilst he was hete in physical form, past of him had already left the club. But you could argue the same for so many players this season as well.... when the going was tough, they were defeatest and didnt show fight.
Put yourself in his position, never on big money (even at the lane as he didn’t sign a new contract), chance for life changing money for his family - I’d down tools as well rather than risk a broken leg and no contract.
Football is fine margins and players careers can quickly go badly wrong so I don’t blame them for milking it.
It’s a job for them as much as we don’t like to hear that, and if the boot was on the other foot the club would happily Sh*t on them, look at what happened to Duffy as an example of that.
He should have had his season in the sun on decent money after bumming around the lower leagues for years and it was ripped away from him.
Unless you are at the very top where you can afford not to care about money it’s always going to be the main motivator.

Quite ironic that after two seasons in the Prem we couldn't pay him properly, and there was no way we could match the mighty bankrupt Glasgow Rangers

But along come little ol Ipswich and they apparently can

Some rewriting of history going on in this thread.

He had a strong three (four?) months at the start of the first Prem season, influencing games and scoring a few important goals. This was surprising, as he had been mediocre a division below, didn’t play much, and had offered little during the promotion season.

After his good few months in 2019/20 he reverted to type, turned up when he fancied it, sulked his way through games, pointed at himself like a massive twat when he scored a goal, then gave up completely for most of the rest of his time with us.

Even with Souza’s high bar last season, I can’t think of a Utd player in recent times who’s over-rated his own importance and abilities more than John fucking Lundstram.*

Twat.

*possible exception, that conceited tit who played up top on loan from Man Utd.

How is it ironic.?

I wonder, Lundstram v Berge.

Goals scored is pretty similar, close on the amount of games played.

I just remember Berge being more redundant far more often, that's all, and we got £12m for him.

I am a mediocre to good squash player. In some matches I play really well and get good results, in others I can struggle and get beaten easily, most are somewhere between. None of this is down to effort as I always go out to play with the same attitude. Why the difference in outcomes and how I perceivably play is down to a lot of different things,
  • the quality of the opposition and how they let me play
  • the style of play of the opposition does it allow me to play my best natural game or force me into ways of playing i am less comfortable with
  • my physical fitness - am I tired, slightly injured, stiff from playing too much etc etc
I think it is no different for footballers
I always think it is lazy of fans to say players don't turn up and don't always put the effort in just because they play better in some games than others, or are better over one time period compared to another.
However I do accept the mentality of players is important and how players react when things are not going for them. Do they front up or hide? To me both Berge Souza and Lumstrum are hiders. Basham, Norwood, Fleck Baldock may all have had their faults but no one would ever accuse them of hiding on the pitch.
