Wild and windy day so watching the full-match replay from Sat. Don’t usually watch the full replay when I’ve been but I’m really enjoying pausing and reviewing good bits.

2 interesting things which I’ve spotted - when Kieron did his knee it looks like it was CCV who clattered into him as they both tried to block McGoldrick’s shot.

Most interesting though, as I don’t think it has been raised, was when Waghorn hit the bar Jake Wright wipes him out with a really late tackle in the middle of the box. It was a stonewall pen, but everybody was watching the ball hit the bar. We definitely dodged a bullet there.

Back to watching the Magic!

Good spot on the penalty claim, we did get lucky as you say. Credit where credit's due as well, the way Waghorn brought that ball down and opened up the opportunity to shoot in one movement was Bergkamp-esque as well, lovely control.

He looked offside from where I was sitting. I haven't seen a replay though so I may well be wrong :)

Was the ball in play at the moment Jake clattered him? If not, no pen.

I definitely spotted the challenge on Waghorn. I have no idea how it's not a penalty by any measure of the laws of the game, but footballing convention is such that even the Ipswich fans didn't really appeal for it. It's like when the ball's going out for a goal kick or a throw, so an attacking player clatters someone with a challenge that would be a free kick and a booking anywhere else, but footballing convention dictates that it's a freebie.

I thought the waghorn one was offside too. Sat roughly in line with where the bone idle official should have been. Everyone around me shared the same opinion as well. Would like to see it again actually.

The challenge didn't really affect him shooting. But I think because it was a great effort, no penalty was given. If he'd have fucked the shot up, I think the ref would have given one. But it's this bit of fortune that makes me think things, you know, might go alright this year !!

Can’t see Waghorn on the video when the ball is played. Wright is appealing for offside, but I think it might be for someone in the centre. Fucking superb bit of skill though, the first touch and then the shot, and deserved a goal. If that had gone in, and then Leon’s first time shot from Bash’s volley pass had gone in, you wouldn’t have seen any better goals anywhere on the planet.

It’s Magic to be back

The ref, who I thought was very good apart from the Leon booking, could hardly have had a better view

I mean, this is why it wasn't given, but it's also not the rules of the game. That's what I mean by convention.

Nowhere in the rules is it said that you can foul a player in the box as long as it's after he's had a decent shot. It's just like an off the ball incident.

I don't disagree with you. if that's a midfielder player switching play it is a definite yellow card. I looked at the ref and linesman after it crashed off the bar thinking there's a decision to make. Thank fuck he hit the bar really. Took the focus away from the challenge. It's these bits of luck you need to get Pro............ I mean have a good season !

Bit like the Shane Long pen yesterday. Just kicked the ball out of play cos he knew he was about to get clattered.

Watched on iFollow and thought it was a definite pen. Odd how non of the Ipswich players appealed and no mention of it post-match

Yeah, on reflection it is a bit strange, as it definitely looked like a foul.

Seems as though the feeling is: 'Since Wright upending him didn't stop him getting a good shot off, he had his chance and missed it. Tough luck'

Which like someone else said isn't in the rules, but i guess we got away with this time.

Not sure if it's lucky or not. Refs almost never give these and not even players (usually bar the one crunched) usually appeal. I'd bet if you ask a bunch of neutrals almost everyone says "Yeah, it's probably a foul but you're never getting a pen". For me it's just part and parcel of football.

Thought it a penalty at the time. Even more convinced now. Funny thing how often these aren't given.

i thought watching it live we were very lucky with that one

I'd like to see that bit again where Brooks was taken out off the ball just after he came on, could that have been a red card ? He would have been through on goal hard to tell from the kop though.

I asked a mate of mine who’s a ref about such incidents some years ago. He said he wouldn’t give a penalty. I asked what if the late challenge was a leg breaker. He said in that instance he probably would give a penalty.

Ref logic is more backwards than pig logic sometimes (though he is a pig, so pig ref logic must be the worst!)

I saw it and thought we got away with it. However I don't recall Waghorn or any other Ipswich players making a big fuss about it.

I usually see that situation the other way around.
Defenders use blocking tactics to allow the ball to run out of play from quite a long way from the line that on any other part of the field would be obstruction, including arms out wide, pushes etc. Always annoys me that they don't get penalised for it.

As long as a player is within playing distance of the ball (that is, could touch it with his feet if he chose) he's considered to be in possession of the ball and therefore allowed to shield it.

I've just quickly looked at the fifa rules, law 5 - The Referee states "Allow play to continue when the team against which an offence has been commited will benefit from such an advantage".

So if my interpretation is correct, the referee can't wait to see if the shot on goal goes in or not before deciding whether to give a penalty, advantage was given by allowing for that moment of anticipation and a decent chance on goal came from it. Not sure if that's correct but it would explain why the referee with a perfect view allows play to continue.
