Interview with HRH

As I said, I'm not suggesting we grill our prince on these issues. As I undertand he spends much of his time in LA and is involved in business, not politics.

But the House of Saud has been criticised for all kinds of crimes including institutional racism (especially against Indians and Pakistanis) involvement in the international sex slave trade, lack of democracy, secret trials, cruel and inhumane punishments, funding of terrorism, the list goes on.

I'm not saying that Saudi Arabia is guilty of all these accusations, but many would say it has a pretty dodgy track record on human rights. Unlike say Abramovich, who has a thorny relationship with Putin, HRH is a member of Saudi's ruling elite, and has presumably represented them in the past.

All I'm saying is that a more objective political journalist might pull him up on the actions of some of his extended family back home.
He's a sports journalist not an 'objective political journalist'

If he was asked such a question at the start of the interview would he be justified quizzing us about involvement in Torture in Iraq, Ireland, India et al for the remainder of the interview? Your other questions were plausible, why would he start and interview with such a divisive accusing type of question? Why would you want to bring it up on here?

Sounds like the tory party

Sell the ground and share with the pork of course.

To be honest mate, I'm not one who'd support one Sheffield team, but I could imagine the sharing of a stadium, much as happens in Milan. It'd certainly address the question of overheads, and might point towards long-term survival issues. Of course, it could only happen if you were both in the Premiership, as there'd need to be agreed splits on ground sharing overheads.....on second thoughts, scrub that idea, at least our ground isn't divided up amongst various loans and debts, so another unrealistic idea based on two properly run businesses. If only Sheffield had two such concerns?

I'm sorry but Shields is a sports Journo and he was interviewing the bloke about his SUFC time etc. Dropping bombs him about his family and countries actions is a bit over the top isn't it? What next shelling Abramovic for his countries actions in the Ukraine? Yes I want our owners to be good, decent people but what the mans country alledgedly does to its people has nothing to do with SUFC in any shape or form. In my opinion of course.

We pretty much invented concentration camps and chemical weapons, should UK owners of clubs get panned for that?

That's my favourite ever Curb episode.

There seems to be some sort of assumption that the Prince must have come from a minted background and be close to the Saudi political regime. He didn't and he isn't. He's a self made businessman and actually very switched on to internationalisation and a revisionist as far as some of the things Saudi Arabia need to address.

The interview below took place 18 months ago. Let's not fall into the trap of assuming that he is somehow symbolic or responsible for some of the less attractive sides to Saudi Arabia. (I'm not responsible for Jimmy Savile, phone hacking or Weapons of Mass Destruction and wouldn't expect to answer questions on such subjects)

He comes across as an honest, hard working guy. I also believe he wants the best for our club as well.

Not sure why we are looking for an angle to have a pop ? I certainly wouldn't expect James Shield to be weighing in on such subjects.

What are your views on imprisonment without trial and the interrogation technique called water boarding ?

Yeah lets find something to beat the club with & bring morale down when things are going well...............

I despair sometimes i really do.
I wish I could do multiple likes!

For the first time in years I feel good about football and Sheffield United and some shitwasps try to get the fans to look for reasons to turn on the club and it's owners who have pulled one of the most dramatic turns of fortune (upwards) I have very witnessed at BDTBL.

I agree with him. I also like posting points on the league table. Just a bit disappointed one of the executions wasn't McMahon.

No need to worry about a merger with the unclean, he's muslim ain't he? They can't stand pigs. Filthy beasts. They have a good point to be fair. Half of em have foot and mouth, and that's just the cleaner ones in the family stand.

Sounds like bad news to me.
It would be better for us if he remained a rich bloke with too much time and money, who sits around watching sports all day.
Is he still going to be interested in us now he's got a proper job again?

Well, he has a Royal decree to join the Government now ! And it looks like the Protocol is to step down from active management of his businesses.

I don't think it'll be a big issue for us. His son is already on our board, he's 16 or 17 so he must be fucking brilliant on Football Manager.

I've read up on the previous Sports Minister who arranged a Saudi boycott of Adidas in 2012.

Blades have Adidas as kit providers a coincidence ? Not now they have the key to a new country again.

The Prince's contact book will grow and I think it will be good for us.

If he has to give up any business interests I'm sure he'll be well compensated.

He hasn't really had any day to day involvement. Jim Phipps does all the executive stuff. It could be that this actually dovetails nicely with SUFC interests?

I don't see any change, he's been to the academy and games a few times but other than that the day to day running is done by his trusted men.

I like the fact that he's kept a low profile. He's appointed people to make the money for him

Could there be potential for commercial benefits for United out of this? Perhaps indirectly - putting us in contact with others in the region?

I thought that was one of McCabe's reasons for bringing him on board Swiss. Whilst he may not be in the super-mega-rich category himself, he may have contacts who could come in as co-investors.

You would presume with his Royal connections, he knows lots of wealthy Saudis.

Now he's a Government minister, he's bound to be rubbing shoulders with a wider base and with companies that have a huge vested interest in sport. It should help.

Let's say that a British Government Minister like Richard Caborn (while he was Minister for Sport) was co-owner of a foreign football club.

Imagine the reaction if he was flying off to see them play in obscure league matches or even Cup Semi Finals instead of doing his job at home.

For me, this can only means that he spend even less time watching the Blades, whether from home or in person. If he's not getting any enjoyment from his "hobby", why bother spending money on it?

We shall see but the status quo was fine by me. Change is not good in this case.

Why do people not understand the sentence, "The money is already in place." HRH's investment into SUFC has already been made. The money is in the bank. He doesn't need to put more in. If he loses interest slightly it wouldn't matter one jot.

His uncle is the one that is minted but looking how wealth and favours are handed out I'd be surprised if this post doesn't come with some financial benefits. Handy for our coming promotions ;)

One can't show more commitment than keeping his son as a board member. Please don't worry. Trust us. Same team same goal. Let's concentrate.

@CoalAstonBlade The changes will be in form, not in substance. The goal remains the same. #OnceABladeAlwaysABlade

@sufcben So the changes will be formal in nature. Nothing else changes really.

@Ijblade We'll see, but you will continue to see Prince Abdulrahman, Selahattin & I around together with our partners the McCabes. #UTMB

@BigMick1889 Complete surprise, but we had great lawyers on the deal on both sides & they provided for the contingencies.

@Annies_song_ @sufcben The plan remains unchanged. The prince's son will remain directly involved as well as his team.

@Annies_song_ @sufcben The changes are technical/formal, not substantive.

Holy crap even when things are looking good someone has to introduce some rain clouds don't they. What happened to the good old method of waiting and seeing how things unravel rather than just lining up a whole load of doom? Do you work for the BBC on News 24?

@Saudi49er: Dear Blades Family, King Abdullah has asked me to look after sport & youth welfare in Saudi Arabia. This will take me away for a time.

@Saudi49er: I'm happy to serve my country, but sad to leave the SUFC board. It's been an honour to serve you as co-chairman.

@Saudi49er: Impact? I'm still a Blade. My son, Prince Abdulrahman, Jim & Selahattin will carry on with Jim as co-chair. Nothing else changes. #UTMB

cheers HRH :)

Would I be right in thinking that the Prince is still co-owner, just not co-chairman anymore?
