International Breaks Love em or Hate em.

It depends on the result and squad situation before the break really.

If the team is on aa hig after battering a "big team" then it's shit because the next game can't come soon enough.

If you have key players crocked and the teams just had a crap result then they are a godsend.
 
There is going to be live football from Thursday until Sunday and plenty of those matches are worth a watch.

What’s not to love?
 
Fleck can rest his groin.

Coutts will be two weeks closer to full fitness.

Clarke will hopefully be closer to a return

Cranie / Washington and Johnson will have a few weeks of training without it being opponent specific.

All sounds good to me. That said we have considerable momentum now so I bet the players can’t wait for the next match
 
Hate from a general point of view - international football outside of the major tournaments is basically worthless.

As for United it's hard to tell, we seemed to lose every time before a break years ago and I hated the extra time before our next game. We're in great form currently but after yesterday's all action display maybe a rest will do them some good. On the other hand it would be a disaster if one of our lads were to come a cropper in international duty.

And whilst I accept they are necessary, there is no reason whatsoever to have this break so early in the European club season. It's stupid.

I am confident we would have thrashed Bristol City were we playing them next Saturday. Playing them in 2 weeks is a momentum killer.
 
Stop-starting a season for the utter futility of international football is like having to pause Better Call Saul to watch the X Factor.

Even worse when we're on a roll.

I don't share, but I respect your view that International Football outside of the major tournaments is worthless. Russia was the first tournament which England qualified for that I have missed since Mexico 86. But, I am a HUGE fan of the UEFA Nations League. That's the new tournament that starts Saturday v Spain. It pairs like with like. You play teams of roughly your own standard. In my lifetime, in so called competitive, non-friendly, fixtures England have played Andorra and San Marino & Luxembourg far more times than Germany. That's ridiculous. The new tournament puts that right.
It introduces the simple promotion & relegation format that we all watch at BDTBL. The four team, Final Four, finals tournament in 2019 will be a proper, for the fans not the fancy dress, football tournament. It doesn't replace EURO & World Cup Qualifiers & Finals. It adds to them.
As it's "the best v the best" it will become a very important tournament & FIFA will inevitably follow suit - roll on Argentina away....
As a travelling England fan (ie ShitWasp), I'm really looking forward to the UEFA Nations League starting. But, I see your point.
 



I see the need for international football throughout the season and it's good that it's not just another meaningless friendly this time around. It's just the timing of this first one a few weeks into the season is frustrating. There's one in about a month as well, why not just do more games in the October break?

Which I'm sure Bristol fans will be thinking after their excellent 4-1 win over Blackburn yesterday. But I agree, international breaks are usually pointless but we're stuck with them. The whiter-than-white FIFA have decreed so.
 
I know all the look at me, Bigger Blade, I'll prove my passion by pretending I can't go a week without a Utd game "fans" have to make these I hate the International Break noises.
(Although most of the little poppets seem to be able to cope in June & July)
But, seems like a good system to me...

I agree with all that, but would add that the value of a league system matching similar standard teams applies top to bottom and not just for the big teams getting good competitive games. I think it’s a great opportunity for the minnows to have a chance to get some good results and try to develop rather than just hoping to keep the score to single figures when they play Germany.

Absolutely. I selfishly focussed on my own team. But, it's a top to bottom system. Throughout the whole football pyramid - routine like v like (league system) is a good thing - very occasional David v Goliath (cup system) is a good thing. The UEFA Nations League is a major step forward for International Football
 
If all our players come back fit, then I don't mind them.
If Norwood were to get injured however....
 
we now have plenty of time to practice fancy dan triangles in training that bamboozle the opposition.

I think this ones come just right for us Chippy even thought it’ll seem like an eternity to the Brizzle game.

A bit or R&R for the players after the friendly game to ease any knocks with players knowing that their performances have been on the up game by game since Boro. They’ll still be on a high and be champing at the bit again by Satdi week.

United will still play 46 league games and compete in the cups, it's not like we lose out on United matches. It's only a week off, if you struggle with that, you must be suicidal in the summer.

I've always been in favour of pre-qualifying for the minnows in order to allow them to play a similar standard of team and also get a bit of glory by winning it and getting into the "proper" qualification.

But the nation's league provides them with that level of competition and also get a bit of glory by winning promotion, so I'm very much in favour.

When our run of form has been this good, it's easy to want the games to just keep coming.

However, there's a few good reasons to think the break will help us. Hopefully clear up any injuries to key players - Fleck, Clarke, Baldock (?)

Bed in the new players and get them firing - Washington, Cranie, Johnson. I'm genuinely interested in seeing what happens after the new lads have been integrated into our silky flowing midfield play.
