Imagine we'd played him, his performances continued to match all his others, and we were sat mid table?

Phew.

It's not beyond the realms of possibilities that had we kept him he might have eventually forced himself into contention as he continues to develop. He certainly wouldn't have started the season. But when Done was initially ditched and the ineffectual Clarke & Sharp was tried for its second unsuccessful spell, he might have at that stage been given a chance. The fact he's started to be used in Premier League games now suggests that he's continued to improve in training/reserves in the months since we've sold him.

I don't think we were wrong to sell. But I don't think we should rule out that he might have proven ultimately useful for us had he stayed.

It may be that DCL had the ability best suited to a higher division. He may suit a more technical game.

Yep, if you get fair value on any transfer then there's a 50:50 chance you got it right / wrong.

I was offering the alternative to Ricky's viewpoint. But there's one fact that I'm sure of - DCL didn't have a single good game for us, and looked like Bambi on Ice. We'll get £1,500,000 for him. I can't be shedding any tears here and now.

Lookman is barely better than DCL. Nevermind 10 times better. It's what happens with us, no matter how much potential a player has, waft £1m anywhere near a sheffielder and they'll snap your hands off. It's the same reason the city lags behind others of similar size in the U.K. Happy with second best

Exactly. We seem happy with about 1 million regardless and our fans seem fairly content with it as well.

Other clubs must love doing business with us as they know 1 or 2 million will seal the deal and only a broken fax machine would get in their way.

Premier League clubs have a shit ton of money and yet we think those clubs are taking a gamble when they spend £1million on one of our players. £1million these days is loose change for most clubs in the Premier League especially with the daft TV deals which keeps increasing their revenues year on year.

But as usual it is always "a great bit of business" and "He was a shit player anyway so a million was a good deal."

Small time mentality and we wonder why we are still pissing around in League 1 after six fucking years.

Can't understand why anyone would be surprised by this. DCL, hardly touched a ball at first team level for SUFC, unproven goalscorer, and as has been commented on, we're talking potential, not the finished product. On the other hand, Lookman, a division higher than the Blades, scores a few at an early age, thus the substantially higher fee. That should put this to bed, unless this goes round and around like a merry-go-round.

He was MOM in the Grimsby friendly. If you include youth team games as games for "us" you'd be adding a lot more. Decent loan spell at Northampton too...

I should add that if we factor in the Che and DCL fees, and the out of contract players and outward loans, Wilder hasn't had that much to work with - yet. Of course we don't know how much of the headline fees are contingent on clauses or, indeed, if the headline figures are anywhere close to monies received so far (same with the potential Lookman deal). DCL has received international recognition and two sub appearances for Everton, so hopefully a clause or two may have already been activated. Che's played more and scored a few, so hopefully that deal is lucrative too..

Whether he has played more games than DCL or not, this is still a ridiculous fee. He's not outstanding at this level, even players of exceptional ability in the Championship are commanding a smaller fee. Everton must be confident in his long term ability, or stupid.

Appreciate that mate, the trouble is, Wilder will be aware of all of this, and the fact that DCL was allowed to leave was presumably with Wilder's approval. The whole transfer fee business leaves some supporters scratching their heads. I'm not familiar with Lookman, but I saw DCL play, enough to know that he's not what I'd call a constant goal threat. Whether he develops into a bona fide Premiership player, time will tell.

From what I saw of DCL (and it wasn't much), he wouldn't have been first choice this season, perhaps he might have come off the bench and you could imagine we wouldn't have signed Lavery. I think the point is that we need a squad of players who are going to get us promoted and then obviously you look at it again. Meanwhile there are other promising youngsters coming through, particularly Brooks. If selling DCL meant that we signed Fleck, O'Connell and even Clarke, then for me it's good business because it's the present squad that matters at the moment, not one in 3 to 5 years time.
