Got this email the other day:

I’m a writer working on a book "Around the Grounds: The Essential Fans Guide to the Clubs of the English Football League” to be published Christmas 2009 by Footprint Books.

We’ve been working hard to capture the spirit, humour and knowledge of the terraces so have been speaking to key fans, clubs, forums and fanzines, asking them to contribute some of their thoughts and memories relating to clubs and players.

Your forum is a great resource for fans so I’d be really keen to include some of your thoughts on the club for the book. If you’re happy to get involved, please let me know so I can forward you a couple of questions for your feedback.

As with most books, timing is pretty tight so it would be great to hear back from you as soon as possible.

And as ever, we are keen to oblige :)

The questions that you need to answer (as legibly as possible please) are:

  • Greatest moments at Bramall Lane (five or six line answer)
  • Lowest moment at Bramall Lane: (can run up to five or six lines)
  • Heroes of the turf: (top 5 legends and why)
  • Zeroes of the turf: (three or four underachievers who failed to live up to the hype)
  • Heroes of the sideline: (top 2 or 3 managers or coaches and why)
  • That’s quite interesting: (a couple of lines about a player or the club etc that are "quite interesting") i.e. our numerous firsts
  • Don’t mention the...: (something embarrassing or amusing - running to a couple of lines)
  • Villains: (unpopular players or those who left under a cloud – again serious or humorous)
  • Not a lot of people know that: (a piece of obscure trivia)

Answer as many as you want in this thread and the best ones will be chosen to put in print :)

Keeping it all within my time of watching United .....

Greatest moments at Bramall Lane (five or six line answer)

Despite supporting a club which has almost completely revelled in either misery or rubbish for all my living days, there are many great moments for me. Seeing Brian Deane put the ball through Chris Woods' legs in 1991 is right up there, but I'm going to say Phil Jagielka's wonder strike against Leeds was truly majestic.

Lowest moment at Bramall Lane: (can run up to five or six lines)

Walsall, May 2 1981. Any Blade who was there doesn't need any further explanation (United's relegation to Division Four, for those who don't know). I've never seen so many grown men in tears in all my life.

Heroes of the turf: (top 5 legends and why)

  • Glyn Hodges - the most gifted United midfielder in my lifetime.
  • Alan Kelly - the 'keeper who seemingly had a perspex sheet behind him at times. Which given our defence at the time he played, was generally needed.
  • Dane Whitehouse - the ultimate Blade For Life. Turned down Liverpool for Second Division anonymity. Gareth Ainsworth, you are a marked man ...... and so says Dane's Dad.
  • Keith Edwards - terrorized defences like Mansfield, Newport, and Northampton :D
  • Vassilis Borbokis - he actually knew what a direct free kick meant .......

Zeroes of the turf: (three or four underachievers who failed to live up to the hype)

  • Vassilis Borbokis - ..... just a shame he was a defender who knew nothing about defending.
  • Michael Twiss - we were told he was the new Ryan Giggs. Thanks, Sir Alex.
  • Lee Baxter - was so spectacularly poor in the 45 minutes he played in the net for us away at Burnley, I was tempted to make him a legend.
  • Peter Withe - Signed just over three years after scoring the winner in the European Cup final for Villa. We shuld have stayed Withe-out.
  • Ian Rush (loan) - are we the only side he never scored for? He may have been getting on, but he was still crap.

Heroes of the sideline: (top 2 or 3 managers or coaches and why)

  • St David of Bassett - led us from out of the wilderness to the Great Escapes, and the first goal in this new-fangled Premier League. For the first time in my lifetime, there was some belief in the Club. Always good for a quote or seven too.
  • St Neil of Warnock - hated by loads in football, but also helped create the siege mentality which eventually got United to the top flight. Always good for a quote or seven too.
  • Derek French - Just for his pink hat.

That’s quite interesting: (a couple of lines about a player or the club etc that are "quite interesting") i.e. our numerous firsts

Sheffield United was the first football club ever to be promoted, and indeed the first to be promoted by a playoff (called a 'test match' in 1892). This initial success is probably why we've been stuffed in every subsequent attempt at the playoffs.

Don’t mention the...: (something embarrassing or amusing - running to a couple of lines)

.... majority of our chairmen. At certain times, it would seem that half of our crowd were from Interpol.

Villains: (unpopular players or those who left under a cloud – again serious or humorous)

  • Vinnie Jones - bleated that he was 'hounded out of Bramall Lane by the fans'. Nothing to do with being a thug, then.
  • Paul Devlin - greedy bastard just about sums it up.
  • Phil Starbuck - nobody was convinced when we signed him. He left with us all unconvinced.
  • Terry Curran - played well for that lot. Played crap for us. Never liked by us, and one of our worst ever signings.

Not a lot of people know that: (a piece of obscure trivia)

Bramall Lane is the only venue to have hosted a Test Match in cricket, the FA Cup Final, a full Football international, the home of the County Championship Champions, and the home of the Football League Champions.

Again - in my time down the Lane.

Greatest moments at Bramall Lane (five or six line answer)

Tony Currie sitting on the ball in front of the Bramall Lane stand when we were 5 up against Arsenal - and pointing to Alan Ball (who'd done the same to us the season before) and saying - "if you want it - come and get it!"

They don't make em like TC anymore!

Lowest moment at Bramall Lane: (can run up to five or six lines)

Relegation against Wigan - with all the context of the Tevez Affair and Sir Alex playing his U16 girls side against The Cheating Bubbles on the last day of the season. Worst I'd felt since my Dad died - and Brooking refused to dock W Ham points as it might upset their fans  - What southern bias??

Heroes of the turf: (top 5 legends and why)

Tony Currie - Nuff said!! :D (Though his goal against Liverpool is still the finest goal I will ever see)
Chris Morgan - He is the "Spirit of the Blades" in human form! :D
Micheal Brown - For the "Triple Assault Season" - most creative midfielder in years.
Alan Kelly - As HH says.
Wayne Quinn - under-rated full back - ruined by Newcastle. (And the first name I ever had on a shirt :D)

Zeroes of the turf: (three or four underachievers who failed to live up to the hype)

Alex Sabella - Was great for us - and an Argentine international - but we should have bought Maradonna!
Lee Hendrie - Should be good - seems better at fighting with Morgs (Carrow Rd)
Martin Peters - World Cup winning hero - and player manager / total loser at the Lane! :(

Heroes of the sideline: (top 2 or 3 managers or coaches and why)

Dave Bassett - For taking the players to steel works etc before each season -to remind the over-paid prima donnas what the real world is like and who it is they're playing for.

Derek Dooley - For his whole story of shameful treatment by the Pigs, his move to the enlightened half of town, everything he did over difficult decades at the Lane - and for singing "New York, New York" whilst off his box on the day we got promoted.

Saint Neil - For stuffing it up the rest of 'em! :D

That’s quite interesting: (a couple of lines about a player or the club etc that are "quite interesting") i.e. our numerous firsts

"There's only one United" - and they ain't in Manchester. We are the first, the original, and the rest are mere copies! In 1889 players "united" in a team to oppose that other lot in the city. United against Wednesday then - United against Wednesday now!!

Don’t mention the...: (something embarrassing or amusing - running to a couple of lines)

In my rose tinted view of the Blades there is nothing embarrassing (except for those bits HH mentioned!) - and the most amusing amusing thing about us is - us. You need a sense of humour to keep turning up year after year!

Villains: (unpopular players or those who left under a cloud – again serious or humorous)

Paul Devlin - Not fit wear our shirt once he'd decided on a move to B'ham. What ever became of him???
Patrick Suffo - Idiot of the "Battle of Bramall Lane"

Not a lot of people know that: (a piece of obscure trivia)

The Lane was given over for sports by the owner of a local steel mill who lived at the top of Bramall Lane in a large house that is now the Sheaf House pub. Just think - you might be having your pre match pint in his front room!

  • Greatest moments at Bramall Lane:
Tonking the pigs 3-1, after a certain A. Quinn scored first for them.
Alan Kelly, penalty saver supreme, being carried off shoulder high, after the shoot out in front of the Kop.
Taking my daughter to her first Blades game, thus ensuring another generation gets to suffer as I have.
  • Lowest moment at Bramall Lane:
Where to start? Relegations, losing to the pigs last season, paying £2.40 for a pie the consistency of a paving slab....
  • Heroes of the turf:
Tony Currie. The greatest ever to wear the shirt.
Bob Booker. The greatest trier ever to wear the shirt, and the original Ooo-Ah. Eric who?
Chris Morgan. The epitome of the Blades defender.
  • Zeroes of the turf:
Adrian Heath, Bryan Robson and Martin Peters. The three worst managers we've ever had.
Ian Rush was rubbish when he played for us. Walked to the centre circle, stood still, walked off.
Peter Withe. He should give back the wages he took from United lest he be accused of theft.
  • Heroes of the sideline:
Sir Neil Warnock, for managing the Blades as we all wanted to, with the passion that only a Blade can. Yes, we may have done things differently, bur he genuinely cared.
Lord Dave of Bassett. What he achieved on a budget smaller than most pub sides was nothing short of miraculous. Loaves and fishes? Next to Deane and Agana, a mere gesture.
  • That’s quite interesting:
We had a three sided ground until 1975, before that we had a cricket pavilion. The Lane used to host cricket as well as football.
  • Don’t mention the...:
We had a three sided ground in the 90's, because we knocked down one stand and were too skint to replace it for a while, so we had a nice strip of wasteland to look at.
  • Villains:
There can be only one. Terry Curran, the Arch-Pig, who played well when he was a Wednesday player, but was terrible when he played for us. Truly terrible.
  • Not a lot of people know that
We weren't always Blades. We used to be Cutlers.

Just a note... seeing as the editor is presumably not a Blade, can we be precise on the dates and matches involved. We might know what you're on about, they might not :)

You want actual dates and times? Bloody hell, I struggle to remember what date today is, never mind from several year ago.:D
