Basham has achieved hero status with some fans because he has stood out for the effort he puts in when playing amongst a pile of lazy or injury-carrying dross.
He is hard to dislike - a nice chap who is tall , which we perceive as an advantage - but does he use his physique ?
To me , Basham is a "nearly-man" , who could do so much better.
He is definitely NOT an adventurous creative midfielder , he's NEVER going to run with the ball , or split a defence with a pass , or shoot & score , or have a sudden moment of invention and set a an attack going in an unexpected way. There is just nothing in him which frightens other teams when he's in possession.
In defensive mode he is reasonably capable , but can make mistakes and get done for pace. He's not an assertive tackler who "puts himself about". In fact , in midfield I can't really say what he is.
With CW saying that his m/f men need both aspects to their game (they can't be just an offensive or defensive midfielder) , I cannot see CW playing him in m/f , IF he signs his m/f targets this summer.
To me , Basham has been kept as "insurance" , in case CW falls short of signing his desired m/f (OR C/B).
Basham is not a first team player in a top 2 side.

As short arses , Scougall & Reed would need to be a lot "tougher" to make an impact in League 1 football.

Off the top of my head , Dave Mackay , Billy Bremner , Peter Reid , David Batty , Gordan Cowans , Stuart McCall all demonstrate that a small midfielder can be effective with sufficient talent & toughness.

Scougall & Reed haven't convinced me yet .............. but CW is giving them a bit more time to up their game , whilst he is under budgetry constraint.

However , if CW can get Hammond & Woolford off the wage-bill , they will be toast.

Bash might be our weak link next season, but if he's the worst then we'll be OK.

Reed can pick a pass. He is only 18 so will surely improve. He will also look better when there is (hopefully) greater movement in the team both up front and wide. It is the forwards movement that decides the midfielders pass if there is none Reed can only go sideways. I do think if Reed plays though we must have 5 in the midfield.
Why will he 'surely improve'? We've seen so many come through who haven't improved, who don't seem to want to put the work in.
Obviously, I hope he does but I don't think it's a given.

Maybe thru' the years my drug addled memory has made me forget a lot of things.
Has someone just wrote that Scougall ripped teams apart under Clough?
I remember his debut, what a debut it was. God knows how we got beat, Crewe Alexandra away,
lucky to get nil.

Who else did Stef rip apart under Clough?

Should be 2 CB's and 2 CM's.

We're equally lacking in both.

If we only sign one CM we'd have to start at least one of our existing poor players alongside him every match.

For me, Basham is our only CM capable of playing in a 442 as he has the legs to get up and down the pitch and is combative. Even then, he lacks creativity so we'd be reliant on the wide players to make things happen going forward.

Quite agree. Not writing the lad off. Don't think he's going to grow but he may get stronger. Be interesting to see him along side someone who is always available as an outlet and is physically strong.

Players can fill out and get stronger, whilst losing none of their earlier promise - Dane Whitehouse is a good example of that. A gust of wind would've knocked him over in 1988 but he was a much tougher proposition in 1991.

Higdon was always hungry!

Class player who I'm sure be fantastic at this level, suspect it's unrealistic.

I think there's plenty of championship clubs that would take a punt and I also think we'd struggle to get close to the obscene amount of money he'd want.

Poor players are simply poor young players grown up. Most youngsters don't "surely improve". Many end up in non-league football. That's where Little Louis and De Juve are headed....

Agreed on the money front. I used to work with a bloke who's son played in man us youth team. As soon as he moved into the U21 team he signed a contract for 6k a week. Doubt we would be in for him given the fact that our stated aim is to sign up n coming league 1 and 2 players.

Yeah, Rashford's new deal is worth £22k a week if reports are to be believed. Would expect Powell to be on more as he arrived as a potential future England star with competition from other PL teams.

12 days to go to pre season training.

CW wants all recruits on board by then.

That's 1 target man, 2 MF and 2 CB's as a minimum.

Maybe the clear out was a bit to enthusiastic vs budget.

Maybe we'll sign 5 players in next 10 working days, interesting.

I assume CW will be having the same problem NA had and that is players have to be shipped out before new players can come in.

Not with 10 wages gone unless we're going for a cheap as chips strategy, think Livingstone!

We will be going with a cheap as chips strategy.

"Cutting our cloth accordingly" etc.

People need to be a little more realistic
We have no money for fees or wages
So signing players of this calibre is as likely as David Cameron telling the truth

Gone a bit quiet ant it? Computer said "No"?

Nah then Chris Mcwildthing or wotteva thah name is, sign a couple tha likes n then we'll keep a load o names goooin ont' rumour mill. They'll neva realise until 'seasons hafe ooer.

Diego will release a statement via the club , that he is to retire due to ongoing injury . He would not live with the embarrassment of playing for Heanor Town or the like .

Reed , jury still out but cannot be a first 11 if we are serious that we are going for promotion. Just not good enough IMO.

Not much hope for both , and a number of other younger players , if we are to achieve promotion .

Any player not good enough get rid.

"We have to sell to buy"

Are you saying we have had no enquiries for the players on the transfer list, Hammond, Coutts Woolford etc?

Unbelievable, nobody wants to sign old, slow players on big wages? Why is it we seem to be the only club that does ?

Because the people running our Club have got no fu**ing idea about football ........ they would be more successful designing and assembling a nuclear reactor !!

It's the managers we have had , who have picked the players we are left with and cannot shift . The chairman and board have been inexperienced and duped in all things football when agreeing / sanctioning deals and players contracts.

This can only be the responsibility of McCabe , who you would think has money to burn, and more money than sense .

Will this new committee improve matters and proceedings of due diligence - not a chance . Thank fuck Wilder has some brains and knows about lower league players.

We would have problems , giving the transfer listed players away . Best thing to do is bite the bullet and get rid .

Keeping them at the lane will do more harm than good even at 5 aside.
