...but i've never heard of this club or the ex Blades manager!

Sabella was a hugely gifted player, who had the misfortune to end up in the worst Blades side in many a long year. His touch and flair were fantastic, as was his mop of curly hair and his liking for playing with his socks rolled down. Many a Blade has scars on the shins from trying to copy his style.

I have one over-riding memory of Sabella, and it came in a reserve game at BDTBL against Liverpool reserves i think (but the brain plays tricks). The under-rated Tony Kenworthy was just coming back from injury, and the two of them played in the middle, completely bossed the game running Liverpool ragged and beating them 4-0. The over-riding memory came from that game. Sabella, somewhere near the centre circle took a ball out of the air with a bicycle kick pass straight into the path of the sprinting striker. Never seen anything like it. Was anyone else there that day?

NB. If you are going to use your encyclopedic knowledge to prove that my brain stitched this memory together from several un-related matches, and it didn't actually happen, I'm happy with the memories I've got and I dont want to know.

Brains are like that. They have a mind of their own...

Juan Sebastián Verón is the eldest son of former Argentina striker Juan Ramón Verón, who scored against Manchester United in the 1968 World Club Championship at Old Trafford for Estudiantes. He was born the day his father played a derby for Estudiantes against cross-town rivals Gimnasia y Esgrima. As a boy, Verón dreamed of playing for English club Sheffield United, as his uncle, Pedro Verde, played for the club at the time. When his son started to play professionally, his father tried to persuade one of his former clubs Panathinaikos to sign him. However, after a short trial with them, they finally decided that he wasn't good enough for their team. After his transfer to Manchester United, Verón said, "So there I was hoping to play for Sheffield United and here I am at Manchester United!"

Seriously, the lad can still come if he wants.

On a serious note, what's to stop him? He doesn't need the money anymore and presumably only has a few years left in his legs. Why not fulfill a personal ambition, no matter how trivial it may appear to the outside world, to go with all the professional ones?

I think this will be a great occasion for the club, and I may well travel all the way up to come see it!

He had the good sense though to marry a stunninglyy beautiful woman

It may be good to go out with stunningly beautiful women, but for marriage, a kind and caring woman who can cook is much more sensible. If she is also good looking then it is a bonus. It will save you from trying to think of someone you fancy while doing the deed. Mind you after 25 years, you might just find that its a tougher choice than you ever imagined between sex and a nice cup of tea...

:)

Words of wisom, take note you youngsters and see what the future really holds for you.

Stop it Raul.

I watched Veron completely and utterly run the game for Argentina the other night.

I'd have no hesitation in openly wanking myself off on row A of the kop if he's playing the first match of the 10/11 season in a Blades shirt.

PS. Comeplete guess, but does this have anything to do with the unveiling of a statue?...

Can't comment on the Liverpool reserve game as I wasn't there BUT he did the very same thing (almost) in a Div 3 game with Plymouth. Another appalling ball played to him over his shoulder, overhead kick onto the right winger advancing down the wing. Don't remember the rest of the move as I was cleaning myself up for a good few minutes after that.

Im a bit disapointed there may not be any South American players signing to fire the fans´ imagination but a freindly will do!

Oppo for TA to cash in on the "El Mago" t-shirts?! :D

Glad the cat is out of the bag now.

Can't wait personally.

I was there! I thought it was Man U reserves, but my brain is probably even older than yours so who knows! Alex was a wonderful ball player, but couldnt adapt to the English game where forwards were expected to track back and pick up their opposite number. He had no work ethic whatsoever (like Edwards & Sharp) and was only happy if the ball was played in front of him on his toe so he didnt have to change stride. Tony Kenworthy was very underrated, he has the engine and tackling ability of Monty but also could find a pass, score goals and was a superb penalty taker. He would have been worth a few bob in todays game of trash talking overrated, overpaid primadonnas.

I dont suppose it really matters, Liverpoool or Man U, but I'm kind of pleased in a way that you were able to confirm it happened. Its remarkable that anyone does. There couldn't have been more than a couple of hundred spectators.

Only thing is, I can't remember seeing you...

;)

Back to the original post

If this match is happening, when will it happen?

The only slot I can see now in the Saturday or Tuesday before the season starts. It won't be on the Tuesday hopefully.

I hope this won't be one big let down as I really fancy seeing this match - I saw River Plate when they came over before

Blades v Estudiantes - Confirmed

On the OS Sunday 1st August at 4pm

Get in! :)

good prices as well.

Lets just hope the rest of the story happens eh SEB heard anything more on that?

Away from that there is another snippet in the official statement.

Sports consultant Carly Barnes who is co-ordinating the visit, said: "Estudiantes De La Plata is a world class team and they are very much looking forward to this game. They are well aware Sheffield is the place where football was born, and consider it a great honour to come and play against United. We all hope this will be the beginning of a positive and constructive relationship between the two clubs."

Birch added: "They have a great club, admired around the world, and it is a tribute to the strength of our own International brand that Sheffield United's own image is developing in terms of its global recognition."

that made me laugh outloud. I too would wank myself silly if Veron played for us.

It's all falling into place now, Blackwell said he was looking at a defender at the world cup. Maybe he's gonna put Veron at Right Back?
