Incoming....

I've just read the thread and I think the news is a friendly against Estudiantes De La Plata. They play in red and white, their manager is Alex Sabella and one of their players is Juan Sebastian Veron (Verde's nephew?).
(i.e. Incoming, two Argies and a friendly). The date of the friendly is the 31st July, based on the pre-season thread.

So this is the exciting news then?

WOW

It's a high profile friendly against the current Copa Libertadores champions managed by one of our ex-players.

How would you feel if Inter Milan were coming over?

NB. Lou, No.

I suppose I can understand why this would excite some supporters. Particularly those with nostalgic feelings. I dont think its what a lot of people were expecting though and considering the cryptic, secretive nature of the some posts it tended to suggest some ground-breaking news was on the way.

I'm sure it will be an interesting spectacle but unless there is some sort of benefit to the club going forward I will reserve my enthusiasm for now.

You are a right bunch of miserable fuckers. Honestly the South American champions league winners are coming to play us in a pre-season friendly, including Juan Sebba Veron and Sabella. There is a reason they are coming and I think it is a nice touch from the club.

We said not to get too excited but FFS. :(

You did, that is true. But some posts suggested this would excite the masses. Dont get me wrong, its a great friendly and I'm sure many will attend but what supporters want to hear at the moment is news about the team and the club improving. There is a lot of pessimism and disappointment in the air at the moment and when some fans read these kind of threads they will get carried away, thinking we're about to receive massive invesment, or that we have some world cup players on the way etc etc.

Even I was thinking that some massively exciting news was coming so I probably got carried away with this as well. Being a pessimist myself, I always assume that rumours or assumptions about our dealings are too good to be true so supporters being underwhelmed comes as no surprise to me.

It will be nice to see the likes of Veron and Sabella at the lane but its a one off event and once its done its done. From my point of view, I looked at how secretive you were being and assumed this was top secret information that had to be kept under wraps for fear of scuppering the club's plans or leaking something sensitive. With it being a friendly against strong opposition, I dont see why it couldnt just be discussed from the off.

Dont mean to be a miserable twat. Sorry.

Maybe you bigged it up a tad too much Bob.....

Bigged it up? You think?

  • you are barking up the wrong tree looking for two new Argentinian signings
.

  • If we do end up signing one of them Birch will have played an absolute blinder, really can't see it happening.

  • To put some of you out of your misery it is highly unlikely to be regarding a signing and certainly what Foxy was posting about has nothing to do with players coming into the playing squad.

  • I would expect you to be surprised, impressed, excited and only irritated if you thought we were signing Messi

  • It really depends on your general outlook. Remember I've been classed as a clapper so it doesn't take too much to impress me.

As Bob keeps alluding to, there is more to this than just a meaningless pre-season friendly, more than it 'just' being the champion team of South America. I think it is a significant and worthwhile effort by the club and will be a great event.

All of which, of course, is still unconfirmed :)

O yes, until it's on't OS it stays here in the rumour section! Same owd :D :D

You know the rules, many don't SEB ;)

There are a few HPs though, so it's a widespread rumour if that's all it turns out to be.

Hahahahahahahaha, don't start that one, the site will melt! Bigger than all that 'Walcott on loan' bollocks that Robbie came up with.

I think you should change your name from, 'Bob' to 'Bill' and go post on BM :D :D

 yeh I'm not even going to bite this time. Ive had enough of this for one day :D

Even without the Sabella link up if this does come off I think its fantastico - even if its "just" a friendly!

What an opportunity and a scoop for the Blades. I don't know how often teams with such heritage come to Europe for friendlies, let alone play teams outside the top divisions.

And has been mentioned previously, they are the South American champions (same as European Cup). Add to that there are probably a few Argentinian Internationals as well as Veron.

Hey and you never know, Veron might resond like Britton to the lane and immediately want to give up the highlife for a chance to play at his beloved Sheffield United ;)

Any news on whether the club shop will be selling Malbec anytime soon?

You can tell Lou hasn't had a pre-season around here before :D

I'm used to pre-season being very low key / un-eventful. Then after 5 weeks of silence, hearing that we've signed some 34 year old from Walsall.

My curiosity drove me to the brink in the same way I said it would other people. After 3 pages of cryptic, secretive hinting I am exhausted. You guys really know how too drag a story out........fair play though, it took the majority 8 pages to click.

i'm so unbeleivably confused. can somebody please put me out of my misery with a pm to tell me what is going on! haha

Great coup to get them over here for a friendly. Will no doubt attract a big crowd, and maybe create some links between us and the South Americans!

Not quite as big in my opnion as some alluded too however :D

My old man still bangs on about the River Plate friendly, which I was a couple of years too young for him to take me to. I'm told (many times) that the quality of football on show from the Argentinians was at times outrageous and the goals weren't bad either.

It's too be hoped that our fortunes don't follow the pattern that followed the 70's game though - fancied team full of hope tumbles through the divisions in shambolic free-fall.

That was one of my first few games. Think they had 9 of the World Cup winning squad in the team. If memory serves me right we got a penalty which the players wanted Sabella to take but he didn't want it and Woody scored. Also wasn't it the same week as we beat Liverpool in the League cup something no other team managed for a couple of seasons I think.

I'm sure it'll be a nice sunny day out and a chance to give the club some more coin at the club shop, it 100% shows my ignorance to South American football but i've never heard of this club or the ex Blades manager! I must be showing my age, personally a friendly against Real Madrid, Inter Milan or Man Utd wouldn't really do much for me, no doubt it'll be a B team from them and I've always got the impression that Blackwell prefers playing against gritty League 1 & 2 teams so I wouldn't be surprised if we played a Reserve/Youth team, and to be fair two weeks before the season starts I wouldn't blame him.

Apart from anything else Estudiantes have possible the second finest nickname, after ours of course, in world football.

Los Pincharratas - The Rat Stabbers. Fantastico.
