Hit and Miss

Did some decent stuff at times, but also made quite a few errors, in a very shaky back line.

Agreed, really difficult to judge as the rest of the defence was so crap.

Still only 21 and I think could become a decent player just unfortunate any good performance he put in was overshadowed by some of the shit around him.

Mattock for me would do well in Third Division, as long as keep winning matches regularly. It must have affected him last year losing every week.

A bit too slow and not very effective going forward and crossing - that said, as others have stated, he was in a very poor defense full of errors - anyone that has to deal with Nosworthy and his pantomime defending is on to a loser.

I second what alco said, thought I only saw him a handful of times as an exiled Blade. He was dreadful on every occasion.

Agree. He looked a big strong lad but other than that, he had absolutely nothing going for him.

Some games I thought Mattock really looked half decent, but others he was atrocious. He was never on the same shite level as Collins, but he close.

I think he needs to play Centre Half for a full season to really judge.

3rd Tier football is where he needs to build his confidence and at best he'll be a Championship player.

He seemed to be suffering from 'I think I'm actually better than I am syndrome' and as such spent a lot of time strutting, looking at himself to make sure his socks and shorts looked good, hitting 40 yard balls (off target) and generally not working hard.

I don't know how he played a full season in West Brom's promotion season if he played like he did for us. I thought he was mainly signed so he could fire corners in like shots. During a game he didn't do anything that made me think he could have played for England u-21 and did a few things that made me wonder how he could be seen as good enough for the Championship.

I don't want this to sound like a troll or flamebait as I can't think of better to say it for this I apologise, but, I think the quality of our squad protected him when we were promoted. His flaws were hidden within our team. This is why I asked the question. Anyway thank you all for the replies its much appreciated. All the best

I thought at times he looked a comfortable player, he looked like he wanted to play the ball out of defence, I also thought he was trying to get an understand with Quinny working, and he started to look ok just before he got injured. After that like most in the team he looked devoid of any confidence or like he couldn't be arsed at times.

The whole defence was crap that season barring Harry and Lowton, so he was very much surrounded by under performers, it's hard to make a decent judgement. For example this season Colins has performed better, in all games, why? Confidence is up at United at the minute, last season it was practically rock bottom.

Just to add to the general consensus, he was in a truly dreadful team but what you look for in an England U21 is evidence of how he got honoured. Afraid I saw none.

Until his name was mentioned i'd forgotten that he had played for us, that is what kind of impact he had for us.

When you consider we had people like Parrino, Calve, Jordan, Nosworthy and one or two others who i've also forgotten about, it just typify how shite we was for full backs last season
